I'm so conflicted about Avery at this point. He gave us Sexton, Petty, Reese, Herb, Shack, and Gary, but he also gave us his "coaching", Jr., and his wife.

Their defensive style and roster makeup just doesn't feel like a very good matchup for us. They'll swallow up our drive game and be able to defend everything else because of it.
I'm not sure of who I want between those 2 team. I generally like our matchups versus defensive oriented teams, because then it simply comes down to offense which in most cases we have the edge against those teams. The only reason Tennessee gave us a game is because they hit the contested midrange shot as a team at a better rate than NBA superstars do which was clearly an anomaly.
Dickinson scares me a little because we have no one that can match his size and physicality. We can get some of that edge back on the other end, but if we shoot poorly or even just have a less than average game from the perimeter we're in trouble. Whereas we've proven that we can shoot like shite and still win games vs great defensive teams (that are also on fire on offense).
On the other hand, Michigan has some small guards that will get roasted on the other end of the floor without rim protection.
I think there are reasons to like us better in both matchups. Do you believe in Reese's (70s Porn Star Edition) shot? You have to like the Michigan matchup more, because we'd draw Dickinson away from the rim giving us wide open lanes. Do you believe more in our ability to close out the grind-it-out games? Then you have to like the FSU matchup.

At this point the Avery era has to be looked at at kind of a success for a coach that got fired?
- 2 respectable years with not much talent in 2016 & 2017
- The all time great class of 2017
- 2018 NCAA Tournament 2nd Round
- Enough talent on campus to help us do what we are doing now
- Fingers crossed, no major NCAA issues

Don't you yell at me bro. Why don't you strut your arse back to Guntersville.

Yeah I think so. He was almost a good college coach. Avery could identify underappreciated talent like Herb and Shack, he could recruit, he could promote, but he would have coached the Dream Team to the bronze.

A bouncer in Birmingham hit me in the face with a crescent wrench five times and my wife's boyfriend broke my jaw with a fence post. So if you don't post again, it ain't going to hurt my feelings.

Probably what we should have expected out of a pro coach in college ball.
When was the last time a pro coach had success in college- basketball or football?

Steve Spurrier. Does that count?
In all seriousness, I think that Avery did good for this University. His wife was an arse towards Alabama but he was a class act.
I'd argue after years of Grant this program had zero life. Avery brought the excitement back. I'm thankful for that.
I am glad I don't have to see an Avery coached team attempt to make inbound passes anymore.

Plus, he gave us amazing gifs. And that may be his greatest contribution.

He's more a good college coach turned bad in the pros unless you're referring to his USFL stint.
I'm talking a guy who was full pro ball (like Avery, Dave Wannstedt or Lovie Smith) that came to college and had success.

If we are talking in the last few years it's Eric Musselman. In the last 15-20 Pete Carroll

Not going to lie, i'm still a little bitter. Nothing against him personally - although his family did him no favors - but the day it was announced that he would no longer be the head coach was a day of celebration in my house.

I mean there is a reason that Norfolk State is held in reverence round these parts. His "success for fired head coach" very heavily relies upon the fact that he was fired when he was

I think I really dislike Avery because of Jr. I’ve moved on and respect Grant and have no ill will towards any success he has at Dayton, but I’m pretty sure I’d pull against Avery if he were to coach again.

I just don't feel like I'd need to pull again him. I'd be pretty sure how it would all turn out

All of these have been fantastic, but that one takes the cake so far. Petty is just so easy to root for imo and he's been questioned more on social media over the years than just about anyone. His coaches and teammates obviously love the hell out of the guy. Seeing the weight of the world lift off his shoulders as he cracked the biggest smile he could after hitting those two three's back to back the other night was just flat out awesome.
The video they do for Herb will probably be just as great.
