I would only change that to say at least 4 more games. This team deserves to get to the Elite 8 at a minimum. I really have a feeling we get our first Final 4 this year.

I'm probably Gumping, but I've seen enough of Gary to think he can be almost as versatile as Herb on that end. He doesn't quite have Herb's lateral quickness so a slick PG is going to get past him but he can definitely stay in front of most combo guard and wing type guys while also playing grown man basketball in the post.

I mean hell, what about his block on the last possession yesterday? All the crazy stuff happened that I almost forgot about it, but holy hell what a play to make without fouling.

I think Reese was on the right man (Watford). He had been guarding him. Herb just wanted him that trip (and they immediately had to switch back anyway).

It's hard to say what players are yelling at each other about.

Oh it wasn't that one - it was the trip when Reese fouled Watford then started talking to the ref. Herb yanked his arse into the huddle and told him to shutup.

That last possession of the first half on Smart was impressive defense

I appreciate his fire, but man Reese talks more than the rest of our roster combined

If you just rewatch some of the Tennessee and LSU second half’s you’ll see Herb making defensive play after defensive play. It’s just uncanny.

His defense was so high level that I can literally recall the few times he was scored on directly (a Watford post up/spin move and a Smart step back 3).

JQ is arguably our second most important player now, but Herb was the MVP of that tournament to me. By a fairy clear margin.

For what it’s worth, I don’t really care that somebody else got it. In fact, it’s good for JQ to get some recognition.

Yeah - Herb is not only a great individual defender (like, cream of the crop) but he's also an incredible team defender. His instincts are off the charts.

And with a team that makes relatively few mistakes in individual defense, that allows him to almost be a rover a lot of the time, which you can trust him with because he almost never gets beat getting back to his man. Like you said, I can remember specifically the 1-2 times he got beat one on one and the 1-2 times he drifted a bit too far while roving and gave up a look. And that is against an elite offensive team with scorers everywhere. Absurd.

Primo going out is obviously not good but it's giving minutes to Gary/Ellis. We will be better for it next year and it's not hurting us now really.

but yea, we want primo back. No discussion there.

Yep - Ellis stepped right in. He did what he always has done and then just hit big shot after big shot combined with aggressive but under control drives to the basket.

And Gary - I mean what else is there to say about what he did.

Yea, I was talking about Ellis.

EDIT : Ah, just saw Robot was talking about Gary and not Ellis. I thought he was talking about Ellis.

That was Ellis, not Gary. Gary did shut Smart down out on the perimeter at the end of the first half though. They're both really, really good defenders when they stay disciplined though. That's one of the big things that separates Herb from everyone else on that end. He occasionally gets beat but it's almost never because he made a mental mistake. His only real issue is that he hates to give up baskets so much that he will sometimes foul guys when they are in an indefensible position and he should have just let it go.

Like other people in here, I did not think Primo looked like a guy who was going to be playing next week. Just based on the way he was moving around.

However, I have no clue. Maybe they were immobilizing it somehow. I’ve never even had a serious leg injury, much less a knee problem.

Herb got beat on the Watford back door cut where he got fouled HARD and made the layup. Herb tried to help and lost him.

Only time I remember thinking 'damn herb'. But it happens.

Was that the one where the wing man drove, Herb was guarding the corner and helped and then his man got behind his back?

If so, that is the one I was thinking of. And it just proves again how insane it is that I can think of all his negative defensive plays in a game like that in a matter of seconds

Yea that was my bad - I thought you were talking about Ellis earlier.

I don’t know that we’ll have a long perimeter defender next season, but it could be JD Davison. He plays a lot bigger than 6’3”

Langston Wilson will make an immediate impact as a post defender. He’s got Yves Pons bounce with more length. He is going to posterize people next year. Having him, Gary, and Tchikou able to rotate down low will be big next season. Miles has all the tools to be elite if he can learn how to play defense. Athletically he’s the most “like for like” replacement for Herb

Very encouraging that the staff is identifying players to fit the system and bringing them in. Holt can really fill it up from deep

Glad to see Ellis getting props. He has been invaluable.

What a year. Beat UK,au, and ut twice and the corndogs three times.

Main concern in the NCAA is running into elite bigs. Anybody watching yesterday will be pounding us on the inside.
