Disappointing weekend getting swept at Mississippi St. Two of the losses came in extra innings, making that six losses for us this year in extras against ranked teams. I think that shows us that while we're much improved over last year, we're still a year or two away from being nationally competetive (hosting regionals, etc) with this young team. We need to sweep Mizzou bad this weekend at home.

We are so close but we are not there yet. Hopefully we can get to a regional this year. I would consider that a good season and it would give us something to build on. Alabama plays Mississippi Valley State tonight at 5:05 and Troy at 6:05 Wednesday. Mike Oczypok will start tonight and Taylor Guilbeau Wednesday. MVSU is 5 and 41 so I think we can beat them. Roll Tide Roll!

This is a solid baseball team. Just a youthful one. This season will go a long way towards them being a very good baseball team in 2014 and beyond. I don't always agree with Mitch Gaspard's decisions, but he has developed these young guys for the most part.

That's true. I'm just tired of Gaspard, maybe he'll win a NC or something someday

Baseball America has us in a regional if we beat Troy and can get two of three from Missouri this weekend. That would put us at 31-22 going into the Vanderbilt series. We have found ways to lose games on the road, but have taken several Top 25 teams to extra frames. Not to find moral victories, but that is a vast improvement over a team that often quit last year. Even if we are swept at Vanderbilt, we'll still be in. A win at Hoover would probably solidify us in a regional at 32-26 (worst case scenario).

Yea I think we'd really have to blow it down the stretch (ie lose the Mizzou series) to not make a regional. Our RPI is pretty strong and as long as we take care of business against teams not named Vandy, it really won't change much the rest of the way. Even getting swept at Vandy wouldn't be a huge knock on the RPI. Just need as many wins as we can get outside of that series the rest of the way, and then hopefully stealing a win in Nashville will be icing on the cake.

Troy is a good team. Will be a tough game.
Is there anything substantive in this? Or is it just empty talk from the AD?

I've had a thread on here about it, but most people still think it is talk. Those close to the program haven't gotten their hopes up. Things always seem to be "in a few years".

I can't imagine that a business guy like Battle will do anything at his age until it's proven that the baseball program can make money

That's what I'm thinking but he did excite some folks with his quick move to comment on the situation for baseball. We'll see. Most ardent Alabama baseball fans don't think anything major will happen.
That being said, they need help to be competitive, but they'll need to follow softball's lead on this one. Find ways to raise money and build a winning product, then the help will come from the BOT.

I heard something about a new bullpen but I am not sure about it. And they are building a area behind the right field wall which I think is going to be like a picnic area. I would not expect anything big for a couple years. Roll Tide Roll!Beat Troy!

The area behind right field is the "Champions Plaza" for gymnastics, softball, etc. It will include a tiered "seating area" that can be used for baseball. It also includes a new bullpen for baseball. The news breaking today is entirely separate from that. As that project has been underway.

TUSCALOOSA | The University of Alabama athletic department intends to present plans to the board of trustees for a major upgrade for the school's baseball facilities, including Sewell-Thomas Stadium, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.
UA has already started raising funds for the upgrades, which could cost $20-30 million. The proposed multimillion dollar renovation would take place in three phases: reconfiguration of the field within the current stadium, which includes moving home plate up closer the fence to help solve sight-line issues; constructing a freestanding indoor practice facility; and both completion of the inside of Sewell-Thomas Stadium, including the addition of luxury suites, and bricking the outside of the stadium, extending the concourse and more.
The plan could be presented to the board for approval as soon as next month's board meeting or may be presented in the fall.
The renovation could take up to two years to complete, but sources said the plan is to have it completed by the 2016 season.
One question that would need to be answered is where UA's baseball team would practice and play during the construction, although it is likely that the team will remain at Sewell-Thomas Stadium with the renovation working around the team's schedule. Another option would be for the team to play elsewhere, with the most obvious place being Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
"We would definitely be interested in that," said Erin Colbaugh, events coordinator for the City of Hoover. "That's something where we'd have to go through the process of determining how feasible that would be, but we haven't had any contact or discussions with the university."
There also exists the possibility that a new stadium could be built in another location rather than upgrading the existing facility, although that is a remote possibility.
Sewell-Thomas Stadium was recently ranked the 11th best stadium out of 12 in a poll of former Southeastern Conference baseball players conducted by The Tuscaloosa News. The poll did not consider SEC newcomers Texas A&M and Missouri, as former players have not played in their stadiums.
The UA athletic department seeks to have its funding plan in place before presenting to the board, with money coming largely from private donations. Currently there is little advertising within Sewell-Thomas Stadium, giving UA another avenue for funding to pursue. LSU's Alex Box Stadium allows businesses to advertise on the outfield walls. The new Alex Box Stadium cost $37.8 million and opened in 2009.

Boo, bulldoze that bitch and start over.
But I'll take anything right now so I'll certainly live with an upgrade. The school has another thing coming though if they think improving sight lines for fans and throwing some bricks on the outside of the stadium is going to even come close to keeping up with the rest of the league.
