RollTide.com recap

quote:

The No. 17/18 Alabama men's basketball team used a layup from Labaron Philon Jr. with 24 seconds left to secure its season-high eighth straight victory, defeating Tennessee 71-69 at the Food City Center in Knoxville on Saturday night. Philon's game-winner in the final seconds gave the Crimson Tide its only lead of the contest, as Alabama trailed by as many as 13 points in the second half before staging a rally and pulling out the victory.

Alabama (22-7, 12-4 SEC) was led by Latrell Wrightsell's season-high 25 points while Labaron Philon Jr. added 23 points coming off the bench for the first time this season. Aiden Sherrell anchored the defense with all four of the Tide's blocks this game to go with a team-best eight boards.

Tennessee (20-9, 10-6 SEC) was led by Ja'Kobi Gillespie who finished with 26 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Nate Ament, who scored 29 against Alabama last time, only scored two points in 11 minutes following an injury.

Head Coach Nate Oats Postgame Comments
"I have tremendous respect for Coach (Rick) Barnes and how he conducts his program. They have had their way with us here recently, we were on a five-game losing streak to them. He is one of the best coaches in America. It is great that we got the win. I am not sure we deserved it, but we fought hard. Last year we outplayed them for 39 minutes and change, and this year was the same for them. We were able to cut the lead multiple times. I don't know how long we led, but it was about 30 seconds, so I give a lot of credit to our players for having a never-give-up attitude.

"None of these guys have ever beat Tennesse and they know the struggles we have had against them. My MVP of the game is Aiden Sherrell, we can't win the game without him inside. We got destroyed on the glass and that is what this team does. They had 25 offensive rebounds and we only had 21 defensive rebounds. When they are getting more of their misses then we are, it makes it extremely hard to win the game but we got enough stops late. We outscored them 29-14 in the last seven minutes, but there is a lot of stuff we did wrong and need ot get better at.

"Wrightsell had 25 points on 6-of-9 from three and led us in plus-minus. Philon had has been going through an injury and gave us 23 off the bench. He looked great and made the shot to put us up, and (Aden) Holloway made the shot to tie the game. The backcourt made some tough plays."

TL DR but it was not a layup. It was around a 10 foot shot in the paint.

It’s funny how Alabama is the only one who got written off Nationally tho when it happened to them. But perception of Arkansas and Tennessee didn’t take a hit at all.

Nobody outside the Alabama circles cares about the injury reports. All they saw was Alabama hovering around .500 in league play with some dubious losses. That is why we’ve spent most of the conference season clawing our way back into the top 12 where we probably ought to be at full strength.

Wonder how the short turnaround back-to-back road games affects the team on Tuesday @UGA. They’re pretty explosive on offense. Dead legs could be a recipe for a road landmine.

Definitely a letdown spot for sure. I won’t be surprised if we lose that one as UGA is playing some of their best ball lately and they are definitely the more desperate team. If they can take out Ky in Rupp, they can definitely beat us at UGA coming off an emotional win with a short turnaround in B2B SEC road games.

Our guys may be tired emotionally as much as physically. Hope we can fight through the emotional/physical fatigue and somehow pull out a win.

2nd chance points

How the hell did Bama pull a win out of their hat yesterday?

They played better defense in the last 10 minutes or so based on my replay watch.

A better question is how have we not scored more than 74 points against Tennessee since Nate took the job.

Because this is how their starting 5 plays and the SEC refs seem to enjoy it. Then Tennessee is shocked every year when they get bounced in the tournament because it isn’t prison ball

Off topic... Midway through the 2nd quarter in the nets game and some guy named Grant Nelson is the leading scorer for the Nets with 8 points on 4/5 shooting

There are definitely rock fight games in the tournament. UTK's problem in the tournament is that the way crews get assigned means they won't exclusively get guys accustomed to their brand of "basketball", and the odds of drawing more than 2-3 crews in a row who let them get away with their bullshite are practically 0. Versatility is the name of the game in the chaos of a single elimination tournament and that's just not them at all.

Anyone know what’s the record for most losses against one team in their career? If we beat Auburn Saturday, I gotta imagine KeShawn Murphy would be close to that record.

I have learned to accept that UT is allowed more leeway with the single arm checks and holds.... But I counted a minimum of 8 times yesterday, where almost exclusively, UT would roll a big to the top on defense and we had the mismatch and the big (generally Okpara) would use BOTH hands as one of our guards would penetrate. That's supposed to be an insta call. They will generally let you get away with a single arm quick check, especially UT, but the 2 handed slow down on blow by drives has always been an easy call.
