I think we'll find out the next 2 weeks about Miami with Appalachian State and Michigan State at home. If they handle their business in those 2 they are probably a pretty decent team (obviously not great). If they stub their toe in either they are probably pretty bad.

I thought they looked like a good not great team. King is a good, smart QB and they've got some talent on defense. They just don't have anything close to the depth of talent needed to hang with us. Especially at the skill positions. If you can't put pressure on our secondary you don't stand a chance of keeping the game competitive. They'll go 8-4/9-3, end up ranked in the 15-25 range, and make it to a decent bowl game though.

That's my thought as well - basically the same team they were last year. King is a very solid, veteran QB, but they just don't have any playmakers on offense at RB or WR. Their DL seemed pretty athletic and active and their secondary is solid but a step slow. Their LBs were pretty bad.

I'll be curious to see how they look the next 2 weeks.

I think Miami has a good team. They could even be the second best team in the ACC. I mean we beat OSU by 28 last year. We just beat Miami by 31. They could very well have been the #14 team. There’s just that much of a gap between the mid-level teams and the playoff teams

We preach to win every play, every play has a life of its own, etc etc.......but when the 2nd team offense comes in we kneecap them and basically tell them to kill the clock and run straight into what the defense is doing.

I swear he may do it to create the illusion that we didnt play well in the 2nd half

Or there's also a VERY strong possibility is that he's actually working on something that we may NEED in the future: A POWERFUL RUNNING GAME...

Saban's playing 5D chess... I mean that sincerely... I mean, he's the best college coach OF ALL TIME... Let that really sink in... We're witnessing the NBA's equivalent to Michael Jordan...

So, if we ever run into a team or it something happens to Bryce and our passing game isn't lights out, a strong running game will be our lifeline... Also what if we REALLY need to just eat up the clock?

Another strong possibility is he's testing their intensity, LEADERSHIP, and discipline
... For example, anyone who's served in the military or studied in that environment knows that one of the most monotonous yet vital aspects to close order drill is instant obedience to orders... Almost like training to become sleeper agents... I've been present in an auditorium with over 1,000 Marines present, we'd hear the command "Marines, Atten-HU"... Within an instant everyone would freeze and you could hear a pin drop...
We hear Saban preaching, doing the right thing, all the time, with consistency, toughness, discipline, each and every play at all times.... But how many people actually listen?
QB Leadership!!! The QB is Saban's representative on the field... As Saban's rep, is he demanding toughness, excellence, dominating their opponent with the most demoralizing, basic, brutally effective way when it all else fails...

Finally it's just not in Saban's nature to just run up the score... He knows just as well as everyone else does, his teams could EASILY run the score up... He has too much respect for the game itself... He won't arbitrarily embarrass someone... He could have dropped 70 on Ogre last year. But our coach believes in being first class in everything... He wants the University of Alabama, the fans, the boosters, the facilities, he wants everything to be first class and that includes showing class... He's told the players, don't talk trash... You wanna talk, "join the debate" team... Don't think those visiting recruits AND THOSE PARENTS pay attention to those things... Don't think parents see the relentless play on the field, and notice the "yes ma'am's", "yes sir's" when the players address the parents of those potential recruits??

Now, I could be wrong... Wouldn't be the first time.. he might simply just want to just say frick it let's just run out the clock, so we can get out of hear with little to no injuries...

I tend to think that think that the GOAT has something else up his sleeves...

I think he does want to make sure and be respectful in a situation like that - it's who he is.

But, as you noted, there is no way that he just says "well alright try not to score lets waste this 25% of the game". He clearly has objectives, even if he knows that he is putting the guys out there in a difficult situation in terms of succeeding. Is it to see how they respond? Is it to see if they overcome? Who knows, but no doubt it's more than just "alright lets shut it down".

It still pisses me off

Good
- Bryce Young - obviously. The kid came out and answered all of the questions about him. He’s poised and cool as a cucumber. He has the same poise and calmness of Jalen Hurts. I was at the game, and he just had a presence on the field - like a seasoned veteran. I was more nervous than he was.

- Jameson Williams. That kid is a straight-up baller. OSU is stupid for letting him get away. Likely first rounder

- Josh Jobe. That man is a lockdown corner.

- Reichard. How about that 51 yarder! He’s the best kicker we’ve had under Saban - a legit weapon.

- Trey Sanders. What a great story. He looks like the best back on the team, although it seems like he’s on a snap count. I hope he moves up the depth chart, because he could make a big difference for us this year.

- B OBrien. That offense looked smooth. Great playcalling in his debut. Ofc we’ll find out more as the season wears on.

- Will Anderson. He’s improved a lot. What a monster he is on the dline. He is unblockable

Bad
- The fans. I was at the game and the stadium was only 70% full at best for the college kickoff game in Atlanta. Whine all you want about neutral site games but Atlanta is practically a home game. Fans have just gotten lazy - period. The fans at the game were quiet. I don’t remember them making noise for the Miami offense one time. Overall just disappointed that Alabama fans didn’t pack the house for the season opener vs Miami. I hope that’s not a sign of what our home games will be like.

- Miami fans were obnoxious and trashy. They had a lot of confidence going into the game. Glad we beat the hell out of them

Ugly
- The Holden drop. That was a momentum shifter in the game (Although it didn’t matter much). Up until that, our offense looked unstoppable. Idk how you have a drop machine like Holden in the game with a stud like Agiye Hall on the bench. That needs to change. Hall had his helmet on the whole game and looked dejected on the sideline. I saw Waddle come up to him and try to cheer him up.

- Chris Allen’s injury. What a terrible loss. He was perhaps our best pass rusher. However I thought Drew Sanders looked great out there for his first game. He was in on every tackle, he made a really key, smart play on the goalline stand. He’s not nearly the pass rusher as of yet, but he’s better in coverage, and has a nose for the ball.

- Kick returners. Billingsley and Bolden? Really? I mean i think Saban just wanted sure-handed fielders out there, but would it really hurt to put some real return threats out there?

- Punting. Our punting curse continues. Hopefully the Australian kid can figure it out. Perine is embarrassingly bad. Watching him punt in warmups is an ugly sight

I know I’ll catch pushback from this, but Trey Sanders is the best RB on the roster. I predict if healthy, he’s the starter by mid-season.

Now, this is really going to get you. I also predict McClellan should continue being the #2 back, pushing Brian Robinson to 3rd.

biggest disappointment for me outside of your take is the coaches not letting our backup QB run the offense.

I doubt that you'll see the backup QBs until Young is a little more seasoned. I expect he'll play most, if not all, of the Mercer game.

Not that anyone can’t see it but Jo Jo has all kinds of quickness. Look forward to him getting more touches. He better learn to line up right correctly or he won’t for a while . Saban got all over him

I highly doubt he plays “all” of the Mercer but I do agree with your point.

2017 and 2018 were the only years where the backup QBs threw a lot in relief time. In 2017 that may have had to do with Tua pushing Hurts because Hurts wasn’t playing too well. In 2018 he wanted Hurts to get playing time and there were a ton of blowout wins.
