did not read the link but our punter has no sense of urgency once the ball gets to him. Someone is going to block him soon. We may have to go with the rugby style punt since he gets less than 40 yards on his regular sky punts

It takes time. Give him few games to improve. I expect him to be kicking well by LSU Game.

No way we’re able to keep that up, but that’s so fricking impressive. Anything in that ballpark probably ends with some nice hardware.

yes, new punters normally take a bit, (well, exclude JK) but was just seeing the LSU game - their 44yrd FO came from a DII grad transfer PK... not saying we need to raid a DII school, but I think we need to at least scout them, hell would be fine bringing in a DII transfer every year if the could consistency hit them that far... not sure if the LSU guy has missed any kicks this year... but hey, seems kicking is still a crapshoot with Bama every week. How is the kid from Hoover doing this year?

They raked Ogeron over the coals for burning a scolly on that guy.

We got a transfer from Temple who was 58/60 (97%) on XPs and 41/52 from inside 40 yards (79%) in his career at Temple. He was 37/44 inside 50 the last 3 seasons (84%).

He's 7/10 (70%) on XPs and 1/2 (50%) on field goals (including a miss from inside 30).

We just have to accept the fact that the downside to our deal with the devil was we will ALWAYS be terrible at field goal kicking. Always. It does not matter who the human is doing it, they will be bad at it. Just accept it.

Totally worth it.

This punter doesn't have the leg to become much better. He might get quicker getting the ball off but he can't kick the ball 50 yards from toe to receiver. Hell he couldn't do it in the spring either with zero pressure during A-Day. Everyone him credit for downing several inside the 20 but the reality was he was kicking the ball as far as he could.

Skyler Delong is 6-4, but only 189 lbs. It seems to me he might be too skinny and weak. JK Scott is about the same height, but he's 15 lbs heavier. Technique is certainly crucial to punting and kicking distance, but it seems like more physical strength would improve his distance. It seems logical that Delong's height and leg length isn't as beneficial as it could be without the physical strength to fully leverage it. Imo, Delong should get serious in the weight room.

Damnit Moar you aren't supposed to use that name on the board. It's really bad luck!

I was the punter in HS and about 45 yards from toe to receiver was about max thus I was NO punter. You either have the leg Pop or you don't. You can stay out their all day long practicing and you can perfect the drop but that leg snap was given you. Fact is this guy has the ideal size for a punter. He should be able to extend that leg right up to the sky and bust it....but he doesn't.

If we're talking about bulking up a kicker, it is only fair to mention the results of doing such.

Strength doesn't have much to do with it. It's more technique and if you have the gift to generate leg speed. Hip flexibility is pretty big.

Kinda like a golf swing. Big muscular guys usually can't hit as far and lanky guys that can generate club head speed with bigger arcs.

He needs to try yoga. That was the secret to J.K. Scott's success.

Maybe aTm knocks my confidence down a peg but my observation is that we are going to beat every team we play by 20+ and most of the games won't be that close.

I was hybrid SS/OLB in HS and I also punted. Former Auburn WR and punter Connie Frederick was our WR & ST coach. I'm only 5-10, but I could boom it, with a pass-like spiral, and place it well. As I muscled up, my punting distance and height improved significantly -- I progressed from 45 to 55 yards toe to receiver. My right foot peaked above my head and momentum lifted my left foot off the ground. Like a golf swing, technique rules, but torso and leg strength helps too.

With this offense we might not even need a punter or a kicker.
