You made it seem like the GOP was always aggressive defender of values overseas. Nevermind the Old Right, and people like Ron Paul.

My big concern with the Russo-Ukranian War is that we have hundreds of years of history telling us to not believe anything a Russian state says about the limited scope of their imperial ambitions.

I worry that if the US off-ramps Ukraine that it also means US will be taking a backseat in the NATO alliance. The concern being that the continental powers will begin massive military buildup policies, make their own internal one-off mutual aid treaties, etc. This will essentially recreate the small state competition scenario that made living in Europe hell on earth for damn near half a millennia until the Fall of Berlin. The US overawing the European powers for almost a century has kept that powder keg as dormant as it has been in some time. Europe is not the most populous continent nor the biggest but it has a special ability to drag the world into global conflict or bring their bullshite to your shores.

I don't really like that we have to be the globe's security force to keep everyone in check but the amateur historian in me kind of sees the utility unfortunately. The problem we have is that we kinda need Europe to own it and switch our focus to Asian Pacific and our allies there. However I don't trust Europe to not end up creating a global conflict when left to their own devices.

The insinuation being that it’s a “conspiracy theory”, right?

How many so-called conspiracy theories have evolved into conspiracy FACTS over the decades? Do you know how the term “conspiracy theory” originated?

Any-hoo, nice try. Almost cute!

Why does it matter which seat we have in NATO? If I had my way I’d remove our military presence from all overseas Europe/NATO installations with the exception of Ramstien and Aviano. It’s completely unnecessary to keep those installations open. Nothing happens fast enough that we need to have reactionary forces on the ground all the time. With the Navy’s ability for quick strikes and our airlift capability we basically just need full time access to some strategic runways. NATO is a completely outdated Cold War concept that just isn’t necessary any longer. Threats have changed, strategy needs to change permanently.

Well, the rest of what I wrote was the hypothesizing on why a forceful US position in Europe keeps Russian encroachment at bay and doesn’t lead to a domino effect of continental war that spills over into a global conflict.

I would prefer we got out of there but I fear we’d regret doing so because Europe is perfectly constructed to have competition amongst close, small to medium sized states.

I suppose the alternative is to help Russia have dominion over it so France and Germany don’t inevitably end up at war.

So your first post was about positioning in NATO, now this one is about a forceful US position in Europe keeps Russian encroachment at bay…when did the forceful US position in Europe evaporate? Because we have the same forceful footprint in Europe with NATO for quite some time.

That forceful position hasn’t kept Russia at bay in Europe. I mean against NATO it had, but not against Ukraine.

NATO is a Cold War creation, invented to deter Soviet aggression, its outdated. The US Military constantly has a global forceful position, we don’t need to keep assets forward positioned at all times to be able to react to aggression quickly. Air power enables a quick reaction strike while other assets are mobilized. There is zero reason to be there any longer except NATO. And why do you think European nations like Germany and France are going to turn on each other? That makes absolutely no sense.
