2019 The Opening Regional Los Angeles Preview - Defense (247Sports | segments)

quote:
The Opening Regional Camps kick off this weekend in Southern California. It’s year 23 of the Opening Regional events and the first of 14 camps kicks off Sunday in Long Beach, California.
Preceding The Opening Regional camp on Sunday in Long Beach will be The Opening Combine on Saturday at the same facility. The Opening Combines are testing-only events open to all high school and middle school , and top performers at the combine events can earn invites to participate at The Opening Regional event the next day...
Also new to The Opening event series this year is "The Opening Next" - as the top-rated athlete from testing results at The Opening events nationally in the Class of 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024 respectively will earn their spot to compete at The Opening Finals in Frisco, Texas alongside the nation's best.
The SoCal regional camp is always a strong one and this year is no exception. Here is our look at a few of the top defensive players expected to attend and shine on Sunday.

LB JUSTIN FLOWE
![]()
Justin Flowe is the nation’s top inside ‘backer and has drawn Ray Lewis comparisons since his freshman year. He’s mean, tough, physical, hits like a truck and plays with a serious edge. He’s a tackling machine and brings an incredible infectious passion and energy to the football field. He earned an invite to The Opening Finals a year ago and should have no problems landing a Golden Ticket this weekend as well.

DE/LB JORDAN BANKS
![]()
Jordan Banks is among the most versatile defensive players out West. He played outside and inside ‘backer last season as well as defensive end and even moved inside and played as a three-tech in certain schemes. He’s a natural pass rusher and could work out at defensive end or linebacker this weekend. His best college position is probably outside ‘backer in a 3-4 scheme where he could use his plus athleticism and his ability to get after the quarterback. He has a college body right now and is only scratching the surface of how good we think he can be in a few years.

The expected quarterback group will bring its own level of intrigue compared to most events, led by the hottest arm recently back on the market in reigning Mr. Football in Florida Carson Beck. The pro-style passer decommitted from Alabama just last week as Florida, Miami, Georgia Tech and several others work on the 247Sports Composite four-star talent fresh off of a state championship run at Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin High.
Staying in Duval County another hot name among QBs in the state expected to compete is new Florida State commitment and Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood passer Jeff Sims, who picked the Seminoles over Georgia and others last weekend. A second notable passer recently back on the market in Gainesville (Fla.) Eastside dual-threat Anthony Richardson, fresh off of a decommitment from the local Florida Gators. Georgia offered the 6-foot-4, 214-pounder the very next day. . . (more)

Does Bama have a real chance at landing Zachary Evans the running back out of Houston? I've watched him play live three times. He's the best high school back I've ever seen. Just makes it look easy against really damn good competition.
I know the entire SEC is gonna be hitting him hard and Texas and Oklahoma but hope Bama can pull him. I think he's the best back coming outta high school in at least a decade.

LSU delusionals think they have an inside track to him. Have no idea if he favors them. Has he visited us? There are some really good backs in 2020.

Looking at Surge's 1st couple of posts on page 1 of this thread and the CB's the current leaning seems to be aTm but the lead expert thinks UTa.
of course, it's still a long way to ESD and he has only visited (unofficials) a few schools (most recently 10rc and Uga)

Losing Joe P and Tosh really shakes up the board in regards to Evans and Kendall Milton.

Losing Tosh was an absolute bummer. I still can't believe he was let go. He could have remained a Co-DC and Saban could have hired another DC.
Looks like there was some incompatibility with Golding.

We not only lose out on those RBs, but we lost out on To'oto'o and Bogle.
Tosh was an intricate piece. I don't even get how he is to blame for our defensive woes when it is Saban's gameplan, Golding called many plays and Saban is the one so rigid he shortens are rotation to four linemen anytime we play a huge game.

Nick Saban didn't want to keep Tosh. The guy was making 1.1 million up just a little from the year before when he was just a position coach. No way is Tosh making 900k as a position coach with the Browns. JMO but I believe Tosh will land with Kirby in a year or so as a position coach.

Wonder what will happen to our California and West Coast recruiting? Don't even know who will take charge. But whoever it is won't be half as good as Tosh. Pity.

If Kirby lands Tosh you can hand Georgia recruiting titles for the next five years.
Guess Sark will head our West Coast recruiting, don't know how good or dedicated he will be. Hope he will be land us a great QB and couple of skill position prospects from there.

I definitely agree with you on this matter. Rotations were trash this year and that might be Coach Kool related IDK. It has gone back and forth on who called the plays but wish Tosh could have stayed in some capacity.

Sark will probably be gone in a year so how will that help recruiting out there?
We have always shortened our DL rotation in big games. Well before Kool came here.
That Saban not trusting and letting these kids play. We needed to get pressure on a QB and we had Eyabi Anoma watch from the bench. Phidarian Manthis didn't get enough snaps. Many other players who are going to be stars in 6 months couldn't even get enough snaps last month.
That shite doesn't make sense.
What is the point of things being so complex that it hurts you?

I'm thinking we land another West coast coach to go with Sark after the season.
