I have no opinion whatsover on Javon Baker and/or about how fast (or not) receivers should be. With that disclaimer in place: here are some stats regarding successful NFL wide receivers and their 40 dash times (which some may consider on the slow side).
Jerry Rice (unofficial): 4.71 sec. [some internet info suggests it was actually 4.59]
Cris Carter (1987, unofficial): 4.63 sec. [Gil Brandt noted at the time Carter had average speed]
Terrell Owens (1996): 4.65 sec. [source: nflcombineresults.com]
Hines Ward (1997): 4.55 sec. [Ward app. did not run the 40 at the combine]
Plaxico Burress (2000): 4.59 sec. [source: pro-football-reference.com]
Chad Johnson (2001): 4.57 sec. [source: pro-football-reference.com]
Anquan Boldin (2003): 4.72 sec. [source: pro-football-reference.com]
Larry Fitzgerald (2004): 4.48 sec. [source: pro-football-reference.com] Fitzgerald ran a 4.63 at the 2004 NFL Combine, but bettered that number to 4.48 at his pro day.
Brandon Marshall (2006): 4.52 sec. [source: pro-football-reference.com]
Dez Bryant (2009): 4.52 sec. [source: pro-football-reference.com]
Plus a quote from Keyshawn Johnson (who ran a 4.47 40 yard dash):
“It's not how fast a player is going forward, it's how fast they can stop, change direction, and create space.”

Seems like I remember a guy named Kevin Norwood that wasn’t a burner but the guy was always open when it mattered.
Uh... what?

Thanks for clearing that up. Short memories on here usually get away with stuff like that.
Just months ago people were complaining about speed from a CB and other players and now we have a bunch of advocates for skill position players running 4.7s amd 4.8s.

Short memories, indeed. Alot of people love to take an exception to a rule and argue that the exception makes it normative for players across the board. It's just a silly argument. Speed kills at the skill positions and with very few exceptions, it is necessary for success at those positions.

Dude I don’t know what you’re looking at but I don’t see anything to brag about...nonetheless I hope they have a great marriage.
I set the transfer portal over/under at 3 years
She’ll get tired of him being unable to give a straight answer and then trying to take credit for anything good that happens three seconds after it happens

Coming in for A Day again this year. I can't remember where y'all told me to stay last year. It was a good trip last year. We went to a Mississippi Braves game in Jackson, then drove over and stayed in Meridian. Got up and drove over Saturday morning for the game, ate with the team, drove back. Seemed like there was somewhere better to stay though that someone listed last year, no not Tuscaloosa.

The internet. Where nothing other than the world's top supermodels are good enough for the slobs that are posting about it.

BREAKING: In-state ATH commits to Alabama (BamaOnLine)
quote:
![]()
Alabama landed its 14th commitment of the 2019 cycle on Thursday as three-star athlete De'Rickey Wright committed to the Crimson Tide.
"First off I would like to thank God for blessing me with the ability and the mindset to play the sport I love!" Wright said on Twitter. "I would also like to thank my family and friends for staying in my corner and believing in me every step of the way! I would also like to thank every school for offering me and believing in my talent! I would like to thank my mom, and nana for being amazing and taking care of a young man the way y'all did is incredible! I would also like to thank Bootsie, Momma Hale, and J-Hun for taking me in with open arms and treating me like I was their own. I would also like to thank all the coaches for teaching me my craft and being there when I need you! Judges 18:5 says, "And they said to him 'Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed.'" With that being said I would like to say that I'm committing to the University of Alabama."
A product of Attalla (Ala.) Etowah, Wright had a growing list of offers that included LSU, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Texas A&M among many others.

A versatile athlete, Wright told BamaOnLine that Nick Saban offered him at safety during a Junior Day visit. “He had told me they like me at safety,’ Wright said after his Feb. 16 visit that yielded an offer. “He wants me to go to a camp this summer because I play a whole bunch of different positions. He said I may grow out of it but right now they want me at safety.”
The Tide immediately shot up the in-state athlete's list when Saban delivered the good news. It was only a matter of time before a commitment was made. “It’s one of my top schools,” he said at the time. “Alabama has great everything. They’ll be at the top of my list.” New wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins is Wright's primary recruiter.
The talented multi-sport (baseball) athlete tallied 54 tackles, including five tackles for a loss and two sacks, seven interceptions (three of which were returned for touchdowns), six pass breakups and two fumble recoveries last season.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder is rated the No. 25 athlete and the No. 390 overall player in the country, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Wright is Bama's 14th commitment and strengthen's the Tide's grip on the No. 1 class in the nation, bumping UA's score to 237.66. Wright is also the seventh in-state prospect to commit to Alabama in the 2020 class.
Stay tuned to BamaOnLine for more details on this breaking story.
