Jones-Bell 'felt the Alabama love' on weekend trip to T-Town (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama hosted Thaiu Jones-Bell, one of its top targets in the 2020 cycle, over the weekend on an unofficial visit. The Hallandale (Fla.) Miami Carol City product came away from his first trip to Tuscaloosa impressed. “It was great,” Jones-Bell told BamaOnLIne of the visit over text message.

The four-star receiver from South Florida got the full tour of campus and spent time with coaches during his stay. “The academic aspect and the love Coach has for his players,” Jones-Bell said of what he liked best. “I felt the Alabama love.”

Jones-Bell named Alabama his leader last month. Is that still the case after seeing campus? “Definitely,” he replied.

The South Florida standout was on many UA fan’ commitment watch lists entering the weekend considering he already had UA No. 1 on his list. Jones-Bell admits it crossed his mind. “Kinda,” he said when asked if it was tempting to go ahead and commit.

Should the four-star wideout make that move later on down the line, what would be the main factor for joining the Tide? “The love they accord to the players and their academics are amazing,” Jones-Bell said.

The 247Sports Top100 prospect says he has no timetable to make a commitment. He wants to visit Penn State, Florida State, Georgia, and Oregon as well.

At 5-foot-11, 187 pounds, Jones-Bell is rated the No. 27 wide receiver and the No. 144 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Tide pledge solid as ever with Alabama (BamaOnLine-VIP)

Javon Baker, WR MVP at The Opening in Atlanta.

Baker is actively recruiting for Bama. 5-star TE Arik Gilbert and 4-star WR EJ Williams are a couple of guys he's working on.

Baker seems like a solid prospect, but a 4.75 forty for a WR is terrible. There are lineman that run close to that. Hopefully he just had a bad run. In the SEC, you better run in the 4.4's or close to it as a WR if you hope to get any separation from the elite DB's you'll be facing on Saturdays.

But he was wr mvp? Someone is missing something and I doubt it’s Saban.

He's not a burner, but he's a chain mover. They even describe him as a "my ball" player, if it's in the air, it's his.

You know Jerry Rice ran like a 4.7 in the 40 right? So did Anquan Boldin. T.O.,Cris Carter, and Larry Fitzgerald all ran in the 4.6s. I doubt any of those bums could have created separation from elite SEC DBs though.

Smh you dont need to be fast you need to be quick. The guys who separate the best have a great 3 cone time because they can stop on a dime and make quick cuts.

While I agree that his top end speed needs to be better, I disagree that it is an indicator of whether he can get seperation in the SEC. Hell he still might have blown by Savion Smith. There aren't 32 Deion Sanders running around SEC secondaries. You see a lot of completely lost DBs running around our conference each Saturday. And as TideorDie stated top end speed doesn't indicate quickness.

While this is true, if you read the report from the camp, he struggled to get separation off the line. He apparently just out-jumps everyone at the point of attack. That's great and all, but unlikely to be the best strategy at the college level. I'm glad he's Bama bound, all I'm saying is he needs to be doing speed work if he truly runs a 4.75 right now. Hopefully he can at least get down in the 4.6's. This isn't the Pac12 or ACC, teams in the SEC know how to play ball on the defensive side.

The report did not say that Baker "struggled to get separation off the line" as you exaggerated. Instead, it said some others did better at that:
quote:

4. WR Javon Baker, Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern -- The Alabama pledge was responsible for the day's most outstanding catches. Baker is very comfortable in this type of camp setting and showed supreme confidence over the course of 1-on-1's. While some other receivers did a better job getting separation off the line, no one was stronger at the catch point. Baker turned in a number of highlight plays, elevating and adjusting in-air to make in-air grabs over defensive backs. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder was at his best in contested situations, shining on back shoulder throws and jump balls. On the testing front, Baker turned in a 4.75 second 40-yard dash, 4.34 second short shuttle and 35.4 inch vertical.

They're honestly describing how Laquan Treadwell played with Baker.

Not saying they're the same player, but they're playstyle is very similar.

I would also argue this is different than high pointing and out jumping DBs. Sounds like he is just good when contested regardless of where the ball is thrown.

I have actually trained with two of those guys you mentioned and they were not 4.6 runners.

Low 4.5.

Jerry Rice is the best ever. However it's a different time and being a 6'1 receiver almost running a 4.8 is not it man.

If the kid were 6'4 or 6'5 I'd understand him as a big bodied possession receiver. Not at 6'1 though.

Do you realize how slow Jarvis Landry ran at the Combine? You know what he did after that performance? Catch the most balls ever in his first 3 years in the league. I'll take shuttle over 40 all day long unless you're strictly running 9 routes every single play.

quote:

The NFL took a look back at Landry's performance at the NFL Combine. He ran a 4.77 second time in the 40-yard dash. He had a 28.5-inch vertical jump as well as a 110 inch broad jump. The wide receiver had just 12 repetitions on the bench press.

He ran a 4.34 shuttle man.

That's just as bad as the 4.75.

For a comparison the Quadarrius kid from Alabama every has been iffy on ran a 4.25 shuttle. Kid even ran a 4.60 forty.

The irony of all this is of we tell this kid to start looking elsewhere in 6 months every one if you will say we are upgrading and wanted more speed at the position.
