He recruitment is still open and he plans on visiting UF. Not sure what the point is committing this early anyway. Guess they want to save a spot but “committed” is not the case IMO

What new Tide commit Robinson brings to the table (BamaOnLine | embedded video

quote:

Alabama added commitment No. 11 on Monday as three-star cornerback Jahquez Robinson committed to the Crimson Tide over an ever-growing offer list that includes Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU and Texas, among others.

The Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood product at just under 6-foot-2, 174-pounds fits the billing of a prototypicial cornerback that Nick Saban recruits. Last season, Robinson amassed 22 tackles, 10 pass breakups and two interceptions, helping Sandalwood to a 7-3 record.

“He has the obvious traits … 6-2, length, lean, a body to be developed, and then on film you see flashes of why he's one of the more sought after DBs in Florida,” 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong said. “He shows instincts and range and cover ability.

"We’re still learning about him, waiting to get verified athleticism on him. You see him in man coverage running with receivers on Friday nights. He shows physicality on tape, making plays in the flats, getting off blocks and tackling in space. There’s upside here.”

Sandalwood head coach Adam Geis, the person most familiar with Robinson’s ability outside of Robinson himself, shared his take on what makes his rising senior special.

“He likes to play man-to-man coverage,” Geis said. “He’s tall, he’s long, he’s kind of perfect for what Alabama does. He gets up in your face and plays. That’s what we do. It’s easy when you have a kid that size that has film of nothing but that to be evaluated. That’s what we do. We get up in your face and we play man-to-man.”

Geis estimates Sandalwood has churned out eight or nine Division I cornerbacks in the last eight or nine years. 2020 will be no different.

“He’s tall, he’s long, he’s a strong kid,” Geis said of Robinson. “He’s highly intelligent. The kid takes honors classes, he’s almost a 4.0 student. You can’t really not like him.”

Robinson won’t be the only prospect in the state of Florida (or Jacksonville for that matter) that Alabama will continue to pursue. Four-star quarterback Carson Beck, three-star receiver Thaiu Jones-Bell, and three-star edge rusher Chantz Williams are just some of the Sunshine State prospects that the Tide is after.

THE STORYLINE

Arik Gilbert is the top-rated athlete in the 2020 class, mainly because of his special versatility and his ability to play on both sides of the ball.

The Marietta, Ga., five-star is almost definitely going to be some sort of flex tight end in college, but the 6-foot-5, 248-pound recruit could also move to defensive end if needed. But many believe Gilbert will end up as a tight end, and at this point in his recruitment there seems to be little debate about it.

If he was currently ranked at that position, the five-star prospect would be tied for the top spot as the highest-rated high school tight end in Rivals history dating back to 2002 with Alief (Texas) Elsik’s Tony Hills, Jr., who was seventh in the 2003 class rankings.

The only tight end ever rated higher than Hills – and Gilbert, if he was among the tight end grouping – was Torrance (Calif.) El Camino C.C. recruit Kolomona Kapanui in the 2004 class.

Gilbert is a phenomenal tight end prospect, and his ranking would put him higher than Martellus Bennett, Greg Olsen and O.J. Howard, including five-star tight end Darnell Washington, a fellow member of this recruiting class.

And the Marietta prospect could flip to defensive end and maybe be just as special. Is offense the right spot for Gilbert?

FIRST TAKE: CHAD SIMMONS, SOUTHEAST RECRUITING ANALYST

“Could he play defensive end? Yes. And he could be very good. But, with that said, his heart is with offense and he is a freakish athlete that is a nightmare for a linebacker or defensive back to cover. He has great size, hands and athleticism for a tight end. He weighs right around 250 pounds and runs by some outstanding safeties.

"As a junior, he had almost 90 receptions for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns – and that’s while playing both sides of the ball full time. He is a scary athlete who will only get better once he settles in and plays one position on the next level. So, in short, his ranking is right.”

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, NATIONAL RECRUITING DIRECTOR

“He’s a really good defensive end, too, and some schools are looking at him as a guy who could play tight end, but if that doesn’t work out he could move to defensive end. I’m not sure if he’ll switch positions and that will determine he’s a tight end. Right now, he’s good at the athlete position and he’s definitely one of the more physically gifted tight ends we’ve seen over the years. He’s probably the most athletic one we’ve seen since Howard.”

Prospects that earned their stripes at Rivals 3 Stripe Camp in Los Angeles (segments)
quote:

NORWALK, CA - The 2019 Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas rolled into the Los Angeles area on Sunday, with some of the area's top prospects turning out to compete in the first regional stop of this year’s tour. With so much talent on hand, there were plenty impressive performances, but only a select few can win position MVPs or earn a much-coveted invite to the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas. We run through the players who won awards and earned their stripes at Sunday’s event.

RUNNING BACK MVP

Bijan Robinson did not sign up for the camp until only a few days ago but he came prepared and looked great all day whether going through drills or in the one-on-one setting against some really talented and physical linebackers. The four-star from Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe is incredibly shifty and slippery where linebackers try to jam him at the line or grab him when Robinson gets by them but he escapes and catches the pass. He has light feet, he can plant and explode and he has fantastic hands to make some tough catches. UCLA, USC, Ohio State and Oklahoma were four programs he’s watching closely.

LINEBACKER MVP

Justin Flowe is already a five-star linebacker. He’s already one of the top overall prospects in the country. He’s already been to the Five-Star Challenge. But here was Flowe back at camp, going every rep and picking out the best running backs to compete against in one-on-ones. He was again excellent, physical as any linebacker in recent memory and competitive on every single rep. Flowe not only talks about being the best linebacker he can be, the five-star shows up to compete anywhere and anytime. Texas, USC, Oregon, Clemson, Georgia and others remain in the mix.

DEFENSIVE BACK MVP

Off the field, Kelee Ringo is pleasant, friendly and conversational. On it, something switches on and the five-star cornerback wants to go after every top receiver, pick off every pass and just take over and dominate. That’s exactly what he did at Sunday’s camp as not many receivers had any success at all against him. Add that competitiveness level to someone who has tremendous length and athleticism and a special prospect emerges. That’s Ringo. He just visited UCLA this past weekend, he wants to see Texas soon and Georgia is intriguing after a visit to Athens.

Rivals Camp Series Los Angeles: The Gorney Awards (segments)
quote:

NORWALK, CA - The Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Series presented by adidas in Southern California is in the books. After watching Sunday’s camp, here are the Gorney Awards.

THE ADONIS - Darnell Washington

There might not be a tight end in Rivals history dating back to 2002 that is as impressive from a physical standpoint than Las Vegas (Nev.) Desert Pines’ Darnell Washington, who is all of 6-foot-7 and 260 pounds. The five-star prospect had to go buy new cleats before the camp but that didn’t slow him down at all. He moves like a basketball player, he has hands like an elite receiver and the feeling around camp is that we haven’t seen a tight end like him, maybe ever, at Rivals.

Honorable mention: Five-star linebacker Justin Flowe is a physical specimen who loves showing off his muscles any chance he gets and he plays with such an intensity that one cannot help but love to watch him. Four-star running back Kendall Milton has gotten thicker since we saw him last season but has not lost his speed...

PHYSICAL PROWESS - Justin Flowe

This award goes to the best-looking prospect on the hoof and it was a unanimous decision - Justin Flowe is a man. A grown man. What’s so special about Flowe is that he’s not only a weight room warrior but he comes to every event looking to dominate and to physically take over. The five-star has already proven himself to be one of the best prospects in the 2020 class and he still comes to every camp or 7-on-7 tournament to keep getting better. He’s an impressive specimen and I love his mental makeup.

Honorable mention: I had not seen four-star Jordan Banks in a few months and he looks like a million bucks. The Harbor City (Calif.) Narbonne recruit can play linebacker or defensive end, he’s jacked up and he can move as well. Banks was impressive throughout the camp and it’s no shock a lot of SEC schools are enamored with him because he’s a tough, physical, no-nonsense kid.

FANCY FEET - Bijan Robinson

Bijan Robinson had a fantastic day at the camp and even though spots are going to be tight, the four-star running back will be in the running for a spot at the Five-Star Challenge. He showed off light and quick feet during the drills and then he roasted a bunch of defenders and caught passes during one-on-ones. Whichever college lands him, they’re going to have a player who can run between the tackles or catch passes out of the backfield and be a mismatch for most defenses.

THE SNUGGIE - Kelee Ringo

Kelee Ringo is in the running to be the top cornerback in the 2020 class and his performance on Sunday will only make his backers even more convinced about putting him in that top slot. He’s an athletic specimen, he’s big and the DB coach at the camp told me it was clear that the five-star was by far the best defensive back at the event. It was an easy call.
