The Opening Miami: Recruiting Notebook (247Sports | John Garcia Jr. | segments)

Marcus Rosemy
quote:

DAVIE, FL -- Several dozen of the top prospects in the state of Florida gathered at the Miami Dolphins Training Facility Sunday for some work against one another. The Opening Miami came to a conclusion with big recruiting news items.

* Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas offensive tackle Marcus Dumervil had an eventful Saturday, adding a scholarship offer from Georgia following an unofficial visit to UCF. Upon hearing of the Bulldog tender, the 6-foot-5, 300-pounder announced it as a ‘huge’ offer. Sunday he said the initial contact with the UGA staff, including offensive line coach Sam Pittman, had his attention. Dumervil has also noticed the amount of south Florida elites who the Bulldogs have landed in recent cycles, but maintains no early favorites in the process. . .

* The highest-ranked prospect in attendance, Aquinas wide receiver Marcus Rosemy, maintains patience with the process but did say Ohio State may be the early team to beat with the local Miami Hurricanes on the Buckeyes’ heels. Florida and Florida State are also squarely in the mix. Rosemy is considering spring or summer official visits, though destinations are to be determined. . .

* Another offensive emerger in Miami (Fla.) Carol City wide receiver Thaiu Jones-Bell said Alabama is his leader as they sell him on the path that Amari Cooper took from south Florida to Tuscaloosa. Miami, Penn State, Tennessee and Syracuse were also mentioned as Jones-Bell contemplates a potential early decision. . .

247Sports' Charles Power, Andrew Ivins, Luke Stampini and Zach Blostein contributed to this report.

The Opening Miami All-Camp Team
(InsideTheU | David Lake | segments)

quote:

DAVIE, FL -- Over 300 of the top recruits from the South Florida area competed on Sunday at the Miami Dolphins' practice facility at Nike's Miami Opening camp. Who are the players we would want to build a 22-man team with that competed in the loaded event? Read on and find out.

OFFENSE

WR Thaiu Jones-Bell: Jones-Bell is a sudden athlete that can accelerate and hit his top speed in a hurry. Jones-Bell didn’t lose a rep during one-on-ones and routinely got behind defensive backs with his speed.

WR Marcus Rosemy: Rosemy was the top big receiver at the camp, showing off good ball skills. His impressive catch radius allows him to snatch 50-50 balls.

RT Marcus Dumervil: Dumervil primarily played right tackle at the camp and uses his impressive wingspan to keep defensive ends at bay. Dumervil has the most upside of any offensive lineman at the camp.

Miami recruiting scoop from The Opening Miami
(InsideTheU | Andrew Ivins | segments)

quote:

DAVIE, FL – The Opening made its annual stop in South Florida on Sunday which meant that a number of Miami commits and targets got together for drills and 1-on-1s the Miami Dolphins Training Facility. InsideTheU has the latest after spending the afternoon on the sidelines.

– Alabama still leads for Carol City three-star wide receiver Thaiu Jones-Bell. The productive pass catcher, who impressed with a 4.54 in the 40, said that he will camp in Tuscaloosa on June 21. While it's clear that he likes the Crimson Tide, he said that he's also high on the Hurricanes and is talking with Taylor Stubblefield. Syracuse will get Jones-Bell on campus in two weeks.

– Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas five-star wide receiver Marcus Rosemy said that Ohio State and Georgia are showing him the most interest and that he hopes to get to those campuses at some point this spring. Miami doesn't appear to be pushing. “I wish they would show more interest because they are one of my favorite teams,” Rosemy said. The Buckeyes currently lead on the 247Sports' Crystal Ball.

InsideTheU's David Lake contributed to this report.

Three new Crystal Ball picks from The Opening Miami (InsideTheU | Andrew Ivins | segments)

quote:

DAVIE, FL – Nike's The Opening rolled through South Florida on Sunday. After talking with a number of recruits at the camp I have logged three new 247Sports' Crystal Ball forecasts.

The first one is Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas five-star wide receiver Marcus Rosemy to Ohio State. Rosemy didn't exactly name Ohio State his leader on Sunday, but made it seems if the Buckeyes are the early team to beat. I'm under the impression that he will get up to Columbus this spring for an official visit and wouldn't be surprised if a commitment came after that.

The second forecast is Carol City three-star wide receiver Thaiu Jones-Bell to Alabama. Jones-Bell has always spoken highly of the Crimson Tide and said Sunday that he will make it up to Tuscaloosa on June 21 for a summer camp. Assuming the coaches like what they see a commitment wouldn't be out of the question before he leaves campus.

Note: Charles Power (247 National) also CBd Thaiu Jones-Bell to Alabama.

Five-star WR taken notice of Tide's 'dynasty' at position (BamaOnLine-VIP)

5-star WR Marcus Rosemy 6-3/195 FL hudl
quote:

“Alabama has always been one of my favorite schools growing up. I really like Alabama. They’re a really great program. The tradition and they’ve always been a dominant force in college football. Amari, Jeudy, Julio, it’s just a dynasty of receivers that have gone through there. They end up going to the league and having a great career.”

A. WR is a high priority in this class for Bama.
B. 5-star #3-ranked WR raves about Bama.
C. Said WR does not have a Bama offer.

The Opening Miami: Top Performers
(247Sports | segments)
quote:

DAVIE, FL – Sunday saw The Opening make its way to south Florida for its Miami Regional stop. The event was held at the Miami Dolphins practice facility, which is located on the campus of Nova Southeastern University. Many of the Sunshine State’s top prospects from the 2020 and 2021 cycles were on hand with several making strong impressions over the course of the day.

Alpha Dog

In typical south Florida fashion, the wide receivers were the deepest and most talented position group at the event, by a fairly wide margin. That didn’t stop Thaiu Jones-Bell from standing out and earning Alpha Dog honors.

Jones-Bell was unguardable in 1-on-1's.

The Miami (Fla.) Carol City pass catcher was an easy choice for 247Sports’ Alpha Dog after turning in a strong day of work capped by a dominant showing during the camp’s 1-on-1 portion.

Listed at 5-foot-11, 180 pounds (though he appears to be heavier), Jones-Bell has a thick build, resembling that of a running back. He was exceptional driving out of his breaks, easily gaining separation from opposing defensive backs with an array of downfield routes.

There wasn’t a single rep we saw where Jones-Bell didn’t get a significant step on the the corner including Jaiden Francois and Lejond Cavazos. He also displayed strong deep ball tracking skills, finishing the play on accurately thrown balls. Even more impressively, most of his 1-on-1 wins were after he came up a bit gimpy from diving after a low-thrown ball.

Currently ranked as a high three-star prospect by 247Sports, Jones-Bell named Alabama as his leader on Sunday, citing it as his dream school. In addition to the Crimson Tide, he also holds offers from Miami, Florida State, Georgia, Oregon and Penn State among others. Jones-Bell’s showing on Sunday along with his strong junior season makes him a rapidly ascending prospect in our eyes.

Next Five On Offense

3. WR Marcus Rosemy, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas

Rosemy entered the day with high expectations as the top-ranked prospect in the state of Florida per the 247Sports Composite.

The 6-foot-1, 185 pounder is a smooth and polished route-runner and has high level ball skills with the ability to make contested catches in traffic.

Rosemy did much of his damage on the day on underneath and intermediate routes, but did have one nice deep touchdown tracking the ball over his shoulder.

He posted a 4.68 second 40-yard dash, a 4.38 second short shuttle and 35.8 inch vertical jump in testing.

Rosemy currently ranks as the No. 26 overall prospect in the 2020 cycle according to the 247Sports Composite.

Note: Rosemy won the Alpha Dog honors at the recent Miami Under Armour camp.

4. OT Marcus Dumervil, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas

It’s all about length with Dumervil. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder used his long arms and reach to slow down edge rushers for most of the day, winning the majority of his reps.

Even when beat off the ball, Dumervil was able to slow down pass rushers and uses his long arms to allow a chance to regain his feet in the middle of his pass set.

Dumervil split reps with Miami commit Samuel Anaele towards the end of the OL-DL portion, one of the only instances we saw him lose a rep.

A four-star prospect, he ranks as the No. 140 overall prospect and No. 21 offensive tackle in the 2020 cycle according to the 247Sports Composite.

National Signing Day by position: Top LB classes (Rivals | segments)
quote:

National Signing Day has come and gone and most FBS recruiting classes are completely finished. Today, we continue our position-by-position look at the 2019 cycle with the top linebacker classes.

3. ALABAMA

Shane Lee

Nick Saban will have to replace a pair of starter at linebacker in 2019, including middle linebacker Mack Wilson who declared for the NFL Draft last month. At Alabama, though, the cupboard gets re-stocked at every position seemingly every year with top talents, and 2019 is no different. Baltimore native Shane Lee, a top-50 ranked overall prospect in the 2019 class, is the headliner, and one of three four-stars. He is joined by outside linebacker King Mwikuta, the No. 227 ranked prospect in the Rivals250, and inside linebacker Christian Harris, the No. 235 ranked player in the Rivals250

Rivals apparently doesn't get that Kevin Harris (WDE on Rivals) is an OLB in our 3-4 defense.

National Signing Day by position: Top DB classes (Rivals | segments

The 2019 recruiting class featured a number of impressive defensive backs, and a few schools were able to put together some outstanding groups. Take a look at the five best defensive back classes of the 2019 recruiting cycle.

3. ALABAMA

Signed: Jordan Battle (Rivals Rating: 6.0), Marcus Banks (Rivals Rating: 6.0), Brandon Turnage (Rivals Rating: 5.8), and Jeffery Carter (Rivals Rating: 5.8)

Nick Saban is retooling his defense, and this group of defensive backs will go a long way toward that quick turnaround. Jordan Battle very nearly earned his fifth star at the Under Armour All-America Game because of his technique, athleticism, ability to create turnovers and imposing presence. Marcus Banks was also a five-star candidate because of his impressive combination of size, quickness, and technique. He has as high a ceiling as anyone in this class. Brandon Turnage and Jeffery Carter are talented and big defensive backs who will help replenish the Alabama secondary.

Rivals' ranking of Jeffery Carter is ridiculous and they didn't even include DeMarcco Hellams.

BREAKING: Alabama lands Sunshine State DB (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama’s first 2020 commitment of the New Year is in as 3-star cornerback Jahquez Robinson has pledged to the Crimson Tide following a Junior Day visit to Tuscaloosa. The Jacksonville (Fla.) Sandalwood product’s decision to commit was actually made during a sit-down meeting with Nick Saban on Saturday.

“I just felt a good vibe from it,” Robinson told BamaOnLine of his first-ever tour of Tuscaloosa. “I’m kind of a low-key guy, so everything around it … it wasn’t like a big party city. It’s nice, calm and quiet. I was talking to Coach Saban and he was telling me what he likes about me.

"The only thing he gave me that was bad — he told me I have great speed and all that — was that I need to get a little bit bigger. For the greatest coach in football history to tell me that the only problem with me is I need to get bigger … that’s like music to my ears.”

With offers from Florida, Florida State, Georgia and LSU, among others, Robinson felt the Tide was the choice for him. It’s not just the football aspect of things that won over Robinson and his family.

“Talking to Coach Saban, I just felt that that’s probably the best decision for me so I can challenge myself against the top talent in all of college,” Robinson said. “He was big on academics as well.”

“He said if you’re not going top 35 in the draft, don’t leave I want you to stay here. He said if we didn’t have as many people leave for the draft as we did, we would have a 97 percent gradation rate.

"My parents liked that. They actually did more academic stuff on the visit than they did athletics. This is the best Junior Day I’ve ever been on.”

Adding to the appeal of Alabama was the relationship Robinson has been able to develop with outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri. The two spent a good bit of time together on Saturday.

“It’s honestly like a dream come true,” Robinson said of being committed to UA. “You’re playing NCAA ‘Road to Glory’ and your player gets an offer to Alabama, you’re like, ‘Dang he must be pretty good.’ He’s gotta be good to get an offer from Alabama. That’s every kid’s dream to get recruited by the best team in college football. To be able to commit and play for somebody like that? That’s unreal.”

At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, Robinson is rated the No. 38 cornerback in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Robinson is commitment No. 11 in the Tide's No. 1-ranked 2020 class.
