So if the starting QB makes a lot of plays, and executes well most the time would it be ok if he threw a few interceptions ?

Yes.

How about Savion Smith in the title game last year - He covered most the time. He executed well most the time.

No, he didn't.

Just to add a little to the Washington story, it was in person not a call. The coach came by and asked to see film. After 3 plays he said turn it off. Picked up the phone and called Peterson. Told him he’d found their McCaffrey.

Notes From Alabama-Southern Miss Series By Kirk McNair
quote:

Over the years, Southern Mississippi has been a staple of Alabama’s non-conference schedule, although Saturday’s game will be only the second in the Crimson Tide’s Nick Saban era, a 52-12 Bama victory in 2014. Though not necessarily the score, the result has been mostly typical of the Golden Eagles being a welcome guest in Alabama.

Here are notes on the series:

All of the 43 previous games have been played in Alabama with Alabama having a 36-5-2 record in those games.

No. 44 comes Saturday when Alabama (3-0 and ranked second in the nation) hosts Southern Miss (2-1) at 11 a.m. CDT in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN2.

Alabama is 21-1-1 in previous games played in Tuscaloosa, along with records of 11-2-1 in Birmingham, 3-0 in Mobile, and 1-2 in Montgomery.

How many times have football men said they remember the losses a lot more than the wins? Thus it seems to be with Alabama games against Southern Miss.

Former Tide Coach Gene Stallings had a stock answer when asked about his most memorable win and would answer “Vanderbilt.” He would then explain to a stunned questioner, “When you start out your first season 0-3 and then beat Vanderbilt, man, that’s important.” The first of those in the 0-3 start in 1990 was to the Golden Eagles, 27-24, in Birmingham.

Alabama, which played most of its big games in Birmingham for many decades, went 57 games, from 1963 (a 10-6 loss to Florida) until 1982, without losing a game in Tuscaloosa. That loss for Paul Bryant’s final Crimson Tide team was to Southern Miss, 38-29. (I got out of the car just at KickOff..walked into the stadium, it was like 21 to zip..remember getting so upset when Paul Ott Carruth coughed up the ball...then noticed he was being carried off the field (broke his leg) (Bryant still called Southern Miss “Mississippi Southern,” not out of disrespect, but because that had been the school name for many years.)

In 1952, Alabama finished a 10-2 season with an astonishing 61-6 win over Syracuse in the Orange Bowl. High expectations for the 1953 season, but it started badly when Southern Miss took a 25-19 win in Montgomery’s Crampton Bowl. Bama had outscored USM by a total of 113-13 over the previous three years.

Part of the downward spiral of the Mike DuBose era in 2000 was a 21-0 loss to the Golden Eagles, the only shutout of Bama by USM.

Alabama has gone up against two of the finest football players at their positions in history in former Southern Miss stars punter/placekicker Ray Guy and quarterback Brett Favre.

Crimson Tide defensive coordinator Pete Golding was Southern Miss defensive backs coach in 2014-15.

This is the third consecutive road game for the Golden Eagles. USM lost at Mississippi State, 38-15, but won last week at Troy, 47-42.

Alabama players from Mississippi include defensive end Raekwon Davis (Meridian), offensive lineman Matt Womack (Hernando), offensive lineman Scott Lashley (West Point), and defensive lineman Byron Young (Laurel).

Every pregame conversation between Patrick Surtain II and his father involves a prayer and ends with a simple message.

Since the sophomore defensive back arrived at Alabama a year ago, he’s received a pep talk from his dad before every game. Patrick Surtain Sr., a three-time Pro Bowl cornerback, generally tells his son to focus on the technique he’s drilled into him over the years. He also reminds him to play with confidence and remember he’s the best player on the field. Most importantly, he leaves him with one constant phrase.

“I always end it with this,” the older Surtain said. “‘Win, lose or draw, just know that we’re here for you, we’re your No. 1 fans, and we love you.’”

HEY COACH! What Nick Saban said about expectations for crowd, young players By Mike Rodak | mrodak@al.com

The weekly Nick Saban radio show is back again Thursday evening entering Saturday’s game against Southern Miss.

Things will get started around 7 p.m. when Saban arrives. Refresh for updates once things get started.

First segment

-- Alabama used to just pump in crowd noise in practice before road games. But now they do it before home games in order to prepare defensive players for crowd noise at Bryant-Denny Stadium when an opposing offense is on the field. Saban estimated there were a half-dozen times last week when hand signals broke down from the sideline to the defense.

-- Saban noted the young players getting time on defense are “a little more anxious, a little more apprehensive" and their integration is a “work in progress.” He said there are a few players who might have been pushed into action before they were ready but they are doing a good job.

-- Justin Eboigbe, who will replace LaBryan Ray, was a starter in the spring and the coaching staff has a lot of confidence in him. Saban also said freshman Byron Young will play that position.

-- Asked if offensive linemen would ever switch sides if there are too many defensive linemen injured, Saban doesn’t think there would be an offensive lineman capable unless they were completely out of bodies.

-- Noting how many more snaps the defense played (90) than the offense (64) against South Carolina, Saban said the offense needs to control the ball better. That many snaps contributes to injuries on defense, Saban said.

-- Asked what makes a good recruiter in a coach, Saban said a “salesman that has a good product, that helps,” adding he believes Alabama has a “marvelous product” and a tradition. “But at the end of the day, every player wants to know that you care about them as a person,” Saban said.

-- Many of the slant passes thrown are part of RPOs and are common against single-high safety coverages. When there are two deep safeties, Saban said Tua Tagovailoa has a key to hand the ball off in an RPO. Saban added that 4-2-5 alignments have been replaced in the “best defenses” by 3-3-5 alignments that cover run gaps better but provide less of a pass rush.

Second segment

-- Saban said he hasn’t been a “big fan, for safety purposes" of Najee Harris hurdling defenders. “But I had a coach once who said you can break any rule to win the game,” he added. Saban thought Harris played with more confidence Saturday against South Carolina and showed how good he is in space as a receiver because of his size and change of direction ability.

-- Asked about his noon basketball league, Saban said he has been “W.I.A. -- wounded in action.” Last winter was the last time he could remember not having the league, because of his hip surgery. Saban also joked that his staff turnover affects his basketball league and scouting players for the hardcourt.

-- Saban does not believe the game against New Mexico State earlier this month was a “fair sample” to evaluate student attendance because of the heat. He said he is hopeful that all of his fans in the future will stay for the entire game because of recruits being on campus.

-- Saban said he has tried to get his veterans to have more patience with younger players not meeting a high standard immediately. He said that sort of criticism from veterans makes younger players “anxious” and is “not good.”

-- Saban called Southern Miss returner Jaylond Adams a “very explosive guy” who has three touchdowns in three games this season. Adams is a “crease runner” and not a “bounce-out guy.” Added Saban: “He hits a crease and he’s gone.”

-- Saban said his organization has a “tremendous amount of respect” for law enforcement after the shooting death of Tuscaloosa police officer Dornell Cousette this week.

-- Steve Sarkisian has done a “good job to this point” of getting the ball to Alabama’s top receivers. Saban said there was only one block on Henry Ruggs’ 81-yard touchdown this season.

Third segment

-- Saban said players enter SEC football with a “lot of expectation,” which might not be beneficial to them. Saban attributed that to recruiting rankings and “positive self-gratification," and added some players get frustrated when they do not play or contribute immediately -- leading to many freshman transfers. Instead, Saban wants players to focus on the process and less the outcome.

-- Asked about giving players Monday off from practice, Saban said the team has been “pretty good” this week and has improved as the week has progressed. “I know that we all say practice makes perfect, and I think that is very important, but I can’t always tell from the way we practice how we are going to play in a game,” he said.

-- Saban wants players to self-motivate more than being motivated by external criticism or “dogging” of the team, but said “we’ll be ready to roll” if they are questioned.

-- There were three players in the secondary who played well and others who didn’t. He pointed toward missed tackles and run support on the perimeter as areas for improvement.

Fourth segment

-- There has been a “lot of adversity” this season that has created opportunities for young players. He said he wants fans to “get excited” about the team “rather than have an expectation we’re going to go beat everybody.” Saban added, “we got a tough road to hoe” and they need to develop players, and that fan support “helps players get motivated to do [better].”

-- Saban said there are some games that you win and others where you win and beat the opponent. He said Saturday’s victory in South Carolina was a case of winning but not necessarily dominating the opponent.

I like where this team is. Yes we have a lot to work on but every issue I see is fixable. It is not like we have a lot non coachable issues. This is up to the coaches to correct and I think this staff can.

I also love how the press and most outside the program have written us off or continue to pick a part. I am glad LSU is the hot ticket right now which if they stay undefeated until we play them helps us. I like Hurts is the Heisman story line and not Tua. These things hopefully make this team hungry. Nothing will be given to them this year. If they want something they have to step up and take it. Lets hope they respond that way.

I agree, wish we had the injured guys but, I think Saban likes being able to bring this team along slowly so we don't peak at LSU again

Agree on the injured guys. Though I really like how Saban seems to be positive about the team. Even though we have not played perfect he still seems to be more positive. Again think it has to do with as a coach he sees the issues fixable not dealing with head cases.

He seems to be on a mission and the current situation seems to be getting the players to buy in which I think will be huge come November.

We’re almost perfect now for two weeks in a row, so we’re red hot, but still seeking perfection. Read this list and see if your picks agree with ours!
Headline Larry’s Losers in the SEC – Week 4 – 2018 – Goodbye cupcakes! By Larry Burton
quote:

Oh fickle fate of football prognostication! The game I was most worried about, the game I told everyone could go either way and almost did. The game I changed my mind on several times I got right when Florida did in fact beat Kentucky in the game I warned you all had all the makings of an upset special. So that made me look like the finessing football forecaster that I am.

Then there was Mississippi State. I had the feeling that if the darned Doggies didn’t get out to a fast start they could get bit themselves and that’s just what happened. So that’s where the upset bug bit me and we parted with perfection again by just one game going 10-1, better than anyone else, but still not good enough for us. Oh perfection, why dost thou elude us once again?

But this week, most of the cupcakes are in the rear view mirror and we get into more SEC on SEC action and one dandy top 10 match up, so while that’s almost sure to kill my sizzling average, it’ll be a lot more fun to watch. So let’s just right in and start listing the losers that will be listed on Larry’s Losers.

California at Ole Miss – The Bears from out in the loony left of the country come a calling down to the Grove to see for themselves the great tailgating and Southern charm that makes coming to the Rebs plantation such a delight.

But the Rebels only extend their graciousness to the fans and the bumbling Bears will soon find out that is doesn’t extend to the visiting ballers, so while the few Cal fans that come will enjoy the pre-game, they’ll not enjoy it so much from kick off on.

Cal looked good beating Washington and they’re a good team and this one could go either way if the Bears get in some good scratches early, but Matt’s men have finally got the offense going and I expect them to get the first good shots off. Larry’s loser – California

The Bulldogs have been practicing chewing up Bears this week and think they have it down.

Southern Miss at Alabama – When the Golden Eagles fly over to Tuscaloosa, they’ll be told that there were days when they toppled the Tide six other times, but that was back when they actually had a coach that attracted talent and knew what to do with it.

This is really a cupcake clash now and the score should support it. It’s going to be a long hot day for the gold colored Eagles as they can’t afford even gold plating, even with the big check they’re really coming for.

So watch the Cal / Ole Miss Game, it’ll be much more entertaining, because this blowout has no chance of being a real contest. Larry’s loser – Southern Miss

LSU at Vanderbilt
– In another 11am kickoff, the Bayou Bengals bus on up to Nashville to sink the Song City Sailors. This will be the smallest stadium and crowd these Cajun Kitties will play in front of this season, but that won’t take away their desire to destroy their opponent.

Now this season so far, the Commodore crew forgot what port they left their defense at and teams have been running up big numbers against these Swabbies and today it could get ridiculous.

So unless they secretly move the stadium and the Tigers can’t it, you can count on two things, a blowout win and Larry’s loser will surely be – Vanderbilt

Tennessee at Florida –
Now this is a game with a lot of questions and we won’t know a lot of the answers until after the game when the Hard Knoxville herd heads down to Gatortown to see who can survive this sweltering heat filled game.

Now this has me nervous for two reasons, the Gator gang is missing their main man on offense and Tennessee’s tribe has finally awoke after sleep walking through the first two weeks.

But you have to go with a Gator in his home swamp over some one win Hillbillies and we think that they have an edge in talent too, so that’ll make Larry’s loser – Tennessee, but it could be a close one

The Gators may even eat a few Tennessee fans just for good measure….

Auburn at Texas A&M
– Malzahn’s Meowers meander over to College Station to take on the Aggies in what could be the Tiger’s toughest tangle yet this season and maybe one of the most entertaining games of the day.

Now everyone has said all year that the poor old Planters from the plains of Texas are playing the nation’s saddest schedule of sensational teams, but that don’t mean they’ll lose against all those highly touted teams.

Bo Nix hasn’t played a complete contest this season and that’s what it’s going to take this weekend. He’s going to go one too many three and outs this weekend and the Aggies can finally pop a top poll sitter in the kisser. Larry’s loser – Auburn

The Gus Bus may need a tune up after this game….

Kentucky at Mississippi State – In a 3pm match up, the Kentucky Cat show comes a calling down in Starkvegas and this could be a whale of a game even though the bumbling Bulldogs busted by crystal balls last week by wimping out without a win against a team they should have won.

Also last week, the Wildcats whiffed a field goal that could have won them a game and they’re hoping that this week fate will finally smile on them in another close one and they can rally with a road win.

Now I’ll just admit I’m nervous with this pick and I can see this going either way, but when in doubt, go with the home team and the cowbells could help to make Larry’s loser – Kentucky

Today they play like bad boys….

South Carolina at Missouri – In another interesting three o’clock clash, the Carolina Cluckers come a calling on the Midwest men from Missouri and both these teams are ready for the rumble.

Now the Chickens laid an egg playing the Pachyderms last week and they’d like to show the world that they’re a better team than they showed last week, but these Midwest maulers actually have a defense and that’s something these Chickens haven’t hatched yet this season.

So in a contest where you have a home team with a defense and a chicken that thinks defense is the wire around their coop, you go with the home team and that will make Larry’s loser – South Carolina

Headline Larry’s Losers in the SEC – Week 4 – 2018 – Goodbye cupcakes! By Larry Burton Oh fickle fate Continued from above...
quote:

San Jose State at Arkansas – As sun gets lower, the 6:30 game gets going and the Spartans from the Sanctuary State brings their bums to the ballgame in Hog country to make them spread the wealth from the big SEC money.

But the Hogs have no intention in sharing much more and they’ll hand these goofy Gladiators a game filled with pain and punishment.

The Hogs aren’t going to set the world on fire this season, but they’ll sure burn these bums this weekend making Larry’s loser – San Jose State

Notre Dame at Georgia – The Fighting Irish become the flying Irish this weekend as they jet down to Athens for a huge match up of top ten teams with hopes of getting a win that will get them some championship consideration.

But these Bulldogs aren’t about to the bullied in their own yard and they plan on chewing on most and burying the rest and making these golden domers look like leprechauns without the magic in this one.

A lot of folks think this will be a close contest, but we think it will just be another game where they look like Notre Dumbasses and get exposed as pretender yet one more time making Larry’s loser – Notre Dame

Well fans, that’s it for this week. We’re really getting tired of being almost perfect and are hoping that this is the week the upset bug likes our list of losers and doesn’t was to bite anyone not herein humiliated on this list.

So get your game time snacks ready, pay the cable bill, get your cold adult refreshing beverages ready and thank the Lord that we got rid of most of the cupcake clashes.

And we’ll see you back here next week if the hurricanes don’t come and the good Lord willing and don’t forget to tell a friend to join the fun on the rowdiest roll call of losers listed anywhere.

What Nick Saban said after Alabama beat Southern Miss By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com
quote:

Alabama just completed a 49-7 win over Southern Miss in Bryant-Denny Stadium and Nick Saban finished up his postgame news conference.

A rundown of what he said:
-- Saban liked the way they “came out of the box” in the early kickoff. Defense looked strong other than the late first-half TD from Southern Miss.

-- Saban liked the way Alabama cut down penalties. Only had one for 15 yards after double digits last week at South Carolina.

-- There were many reasons, Saban said, players wouldn’t play well but they overcame that.

-- Saban said they ran the ball “OK.” Southern Miss did a lot of stunting up front but Saban said the Alabama offensive line handled it well. Najee Harris “sorta rolled it up in there” several times and “ran with a lot of toughness so I thought it was better today.”

-- A pulled hip flexor is the injury for kicker Will Reichard, Saban said, after his kicked the tee instead of the ball in the first quarter. That will be difficult to manage as a kicker. “He may be questionable for this game.”

-- D.J. Dale has a patellar tendon strain and Saban said he should be fine. “Doc said he might be OK,” Saban said.

-- A deeper look at Alabama’s injury issues.

-- Southern Miss hit a few plays when Alabama execution slipped. The wheel route just before halftime, a 37-yarder, set up the lone Southern Miss touchdown was a breakdown. “I think we played better today” after putting a more simple plan in place “which I felt like helped young players especially.”

-- Christian Harris “played better” today at middle linebacker. He was only in during nickel, which helped cut down on the number of things to prepare. Southern Miss ran many formations with four or five WRs so the Tide used a lot of dime looks (with just one middle LB).

-- Terrell Lewis hyper-extended his knee last week against South Carolina. “It was a strategic decision that needed to get made,” Saban said to do a procedure that helps the healing process. It’s day to day but Saban said he thinks he’ll be good to play next week against Ole Miss.
