I remember from Saban's discussions last year, when he talked about Benton... He looks for the the short cut when trying to complete his assignments. (paraphrased as best I can remember) but seemed to indicate that Benton was always looking for ways of completing his assignment by shortcutting the process not so much completing his Assignment... I immediately thought of a DE who peels back and tries to cut off a sweep going the other way, just to realize it was a reverse and he was responsible for setting the backside edge.. not saying that was close to the intend

From the 2018 Fall Camp 1st day of Practice: [u]“We need Markail Benton to mature and develop and not be one of those guys that’s always looking for an easy way. "

We’re trying to prepare our team to have a unique standard of excellence in how they compete and how they go about what they do,” Saban said. “You either endure it or you strive to succeed at it. If you endure it, you’re always going to be looking for an easy way.

“You’re always going to be looking for a shortcut. You’re not going to get where you need to be. If you try to thrive, then you’re always going to be thinking about what's next, how do I improve, what do I need to do better.
...
BUT, that is just as I remember things and I could be Mistaken. And seems to be why others were taking snaps before him and does back up the sauces Boz was talking 'bout above

Everything Saban said in final press conference of preseason By Charlie Potter BOL
FOR THOSE WOULD RATHER READ IT:
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama head coach Nick Saban held a press conference following the Crimson Tide's 18th preseason practice on Thursday at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility. Below is everything Saban said in his sixth and final media availability of the preseason.

"We started work today on Duke, really for the first time. We used a couple of days this week to really focus on improving and how much we can improve and had each coach on the staff do a little mini-scenario for each player as to what we really need to focus on. We did some work on next year’s opponents, but now that we start for Duke, the big question is, what kind of identity is this team going to create for itself, in terms of what they want to accomplish, the standard that they do it to. It’s not always about whether you won or lost but how did you win? It’s just how did you play? What is your reputation as a player?

"And I think questions that players should ask is, did I play well? Was I accountable to do what I was supposed to do? Did the guy next to me play well. Because, you know, football is a funny game. Ten guys can do what they’re supposed to do and if one guy doesn’t the play doesn’t work. The quarterback gets sacked. Somebody is wide open on defense to make a big play. So everybody’s got to do their job. It’s a great team game, and if you don’t want to play it as a team game, then you can go play tennis or golf where it’s just about you. And those are great games and I love them both.

"And can we win as a team? Can everybody put the team first, play together, do what they have to do to support each other so that we can have great team chemistry. And do we have enough tough guys that are really warrior types in terms of how they compete on a consistent basis so we can sustain the season. That’s really where we’re at. This is the first opportunity this team has to be judged as to how they play and who they are so we’ve got lots of work to do, but we’re certainly interested in finding out like a lot of other folks probably are."

QUESTIONS CONTINUE BELOW...

Everything Saban said in final press conference of preseason By Charlie Potter BOL FOR THOSE WOULD RATHER READ IT:
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. QUESTIONS CONTINUE FROM ABOVE...
quote:

On Antonio Alfano, Ray Rice
"Antonio Alfano was back at practice today. He had a couple days for personal reasons. Ray Rice was out there today. He’s going to be here as a Title IX speaker to the team tonight, which I think is a good thing for our players. And we’ll continue to work tomorrow, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for this game to try to get our players to play really well against Duke, who is a really good team. I mean, they won eight games last year and very well-coached and present some issues and problems scheme-wise that we certainly need to work on."

On Trevon Diggs

"He’s worked really hard. I think he has a much better knowledge of what to do, how to do it, why it’s important to do it that way. Disciplined eye control is always something that’s really important to defensive backs and we continue to work with all of them on that. But I’ve been really pleased with his progress, and even his leadership has been very, very good."

On Jerome Ford
"We’re going to work him in and see what he can do and try to do more and more each day and try to see if we can get him back to 100 percent. He’s done really well before he was injured so we planned on him playing in the game, and if he’s healthy enough and the doctors clear him and we feel like he’s 100 percent, we’ll play him in this game. If not, we’ll have to wait and kind of see how he progresses. So it’s going to be more day to day at this point to try to make that judgement."

On Ray Rice
"Well, he’s obviously going to talk about how to treat the opposite sex and having the proper respect for other people. And I think that’s important to relationships. It’s important as a person to be able to do those things in a very respectful manner. I think that a lot of players can relate to his circumstance and it’ll be interesting to hear a guy that’s had some issues that now has turned the corner and really doing everything he can to help other people not have the same problem that he has. And I have a tremendous respect for him for doing that. And we’re certainly glad to have him here."

On versatility of defensive backs
"Well, I don’t think it’s about how many positions each guy knows. Because some guys are only capable of playing one position. I think the most important thing is you have enough guys on your team that have the diversity to learn more than one position. If that makes sense. So we’re fortunate now that we have a lot more guys this year that can do that. It’s very similar to the offensive line. If you only have guys that can play tackle, if you only have guys that can play guard and you have guys that only play center and one guy goes down you can’t get the best five guys in the game because there’s no diversity to move guys around. Same thing in the secondary: if you have one guy go down, but if you have diversity you can still get the best guys in there that have the most experience because they have the diversity to be able to play multiple positions and you’re not forced to put someone in as a backup because no one else can play that position even though you have better players on your team, if that makes any sense.

"So Shyheim Carter can play star, money, either safety. X plays safety and money. Patrick can play corner or star. Jared Mayden can play either safety or star. We taught Demarco to play safety and money. Jalen Armour-Davis can play corner and star. We have a lot more guys that know a lot more about the various positions. But that comes with experience because young players usually learn one thing. Like we attempted last year to play Patrick at star and then we said we can’t do that he can just play corner. It’s too much for a young guy. So he just played corner all year. So we have some of those guys have a year’s more experience because we really had all new guys in the secondary last year. So we didn’t have a lot of diversity in terms of multiple position players and we have a lot more of that now."

On DJ Dale
"He was doing really well until he got hurt. So he missed maybe a week, 10 days. He’s probably getting back to pretty normal. But we’ve been really pleased with his initial quickness. He plays with power. He’s very conscientious, smart player. Learns well. Executes well. Doesn’t really act like a freshman at all. We’ve been very pleased with him. We just want to get him back in shape now. Hopefully through the reps he gets between now and then he’ll be able to play more in the first game."

On Jerry Jeudy

"First of all, he’s always been a guy even last year that moved around and play all the sports. So I guess if he can play all the spots that means he has the whole route tree. He’s good inside, he’s good outside, he’s good against man-to-man. He’s very instinctive against zone. So the guy’s a real good player and we certainly need to try to get all the guys on offense that have play-making ability enough touches that they get opportunities to make plays. And he’s one of those guys, but we have several other guys we’d like to do the same thing with."

On Jaylen Waddle
"As you gain experience you sort of gain a little bit more respect for, if I do this right I have an even better chance to be successful. And I think Jaylen has matured into that. He made a tremendous amount of plays last year and hopefully, he’ll continue to have a great year this year for us. But I do think that he has grown and matured in terms of the fundamental things you need to do at the position to be successful on a more consistent basis."

EARLY WARNING SYSTEM IN PLACE: FOLLOWING LINK TO A STEPHEN M SMITH VIDEO... MOST CONTENT NOT SUITABLE FOR ALL AUDIENCES!!! PROCEED AND WATCH AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!! Alabama Football News TD ALABAMA MAGAZINE - WATCH: Alabama OL to be college football’s best this season By Stephen M. Smith

In one of few times in Nick Saban’s tenure at Alabama, he has an offensive line that has experience, depth, talent and strong coaching. While his first couple of units were solid, this year’s offensive line has the potential to be Saban’s best one for the Crimson Tide.

Along with returning Alex Leatherwood and Jedrick Wills at both tackle spots, the team has five players that excel inside at either guard or center. The combination of Landon Dickerson, Chris Owens, Evan Neal, Matt Womack, Emil Ekiyor and Deonte Brown (serving four-game suspension, NCAA violation) in rotation has Alabama fans excited for the season.

In this airing of In My Own Words, Stephen Smith of Touchdown Alabama Magazine breaks down the offensive unit and dives into what makes it special.

Alabama Football’s 2019 Difference Maker: Jaylen Waddle by Lauri Springer Follow @lkspringer Every year, one player rises above the rest to be the key difference maker for the season. For Alabama Football in 2019, Jaylen Waddle will be that man.

The Alabama Football team certainly is not lacking in star-studded players. It arguably has the best receiving core in the country. The secondary will be much improved. Tua will still be Tua. But as we approach the 2019 season, who will step up as THE guy?

Even though Tua Tagovailoa earned a trip to New York for the Heisman ceremony last December, Quinnen Williams was that guy last year. He held the defense together. He was the defense more often than Alabama Football fans would have liked.

Two years ago? JK Scott. Scott kept us in control of the game by manipulating field position regularly. The offense sputtered, but JK Scott was there to pin opponents inside their own 5 yard line. The Alabama defense finished the job.

In 2019? Jaylen Waddle. Despite competing for playing time in his Freshman year, he earned SEC Freshman of the Year award for his contributions. He joins elite company with the wide receivers who include Biletnikoff award winner Jerry Jeudy. With so many future NFL receivers, Waddle will have to share his piece of the offense.

Waddle can make his biggest impact on kick returns. He rivals Henry Ruggs III as the fastest player on the team. Ruggs stunned last season at his Junior Pro Day event clocking a 4.25 40 yard dash time. Ruggs beat Waddle by a nose in a head-to-head race around the same time. Waddle is elusive and scary fast with great hands. He has the ability to outrun defensive backs who easily have the corner on him.

In several recent interviews, players have agreed that Jaylen Waddle is the best player on the team. He received high praise from defensive back Shyheim Carter.

Waddle has been working on his speed in the off-season as well. Alabama Football fans could see flashes of him taking jet sweeps this fall with the lack of depth at running back this year. Waddle certainly has the skill to take a short pitch and turn it into a first-down gain.

His contributions to special teams this year will be substantial. Managing field position and the threat of non-offensive touchdowns will be keys to his success. The Alabama Football team managed to go 10-straight games scoring at least one non-offensive touchdown in 2016, something that has not been as prevalent the last two seasons. With improvements in the secondary and Jaylen Waddle on special

The wealth of Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver talent is exceptional. Suggestions Waddle might be better than the returning Biletnikoff winner, Jerry Jeudy, are stunning.

Alabama cornerback Patrick Surtain II (Photo: Denon McMillan, 247Sports)
Patrick Surtain II has better grasp on Star position in Year 2 By Charlie Potter
quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama attempted to play Patrick Surtain II at Star last year.

“Then we said we can’t do that, he can just play corner. It’s too much for a young guy,” Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban said after Thursday’s practice. “So, he just played corner all year.”

But after earning SEC All-Freshman Team honors as a cornerback in 2018, Surtain once again worked in the slot in the spring, and that carried over into the preseason, where he has spent the last 18 practices lining up at Star with the first-team defense in nickel and dime formations. In the few times we have seen the Tide’s base defense, Surtain has lined up at right corner.

With a year’s worth of college experience, he is ready to be a more versatile defender and fill the Star role -- one that is a key cog in the UA defense and has been manned by a number of talented players.

“It’s been (going) well,” Surtain said. “It’s a new learning process for me. I’m just still working on it, still competing. ... It means a lot for me, just because that means the coaches believe in me to play that position. The coaches have a lot of trust in me, so I believe I should carry it on and take that position well.”

Surtain started his freshman campaign as a top reserve in Alabama’s secondary but stepped into a starting role at cornerback on the second series of the Ole Miss game after Saivion Smith gave up a touchdown on the first offensive snap. From there, Surtain started the next 12 games and totaled 37 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, seven pass breakups, one interception and one forced fumble.

When he saw the field with the first team, he didn’t squander the opportunity.

“It wasn’t that much pressure,” Surtain said. “I just felt like it’s my time to step up and just show my contributions to the team and just believe in my fundamentals and my technique. I stepped into a big moment, and I just played my game.”

What was the biggest learning curve for 2018’s No. 1 cornerback, per the 247Sports Composite?

“Basically just knowing what happens before the play, just knowing what my mental focus was,” Surtain said. “As a freshman, I probably didn’t take things as far as learning more things on the field, like watching film. I think I took that for granted, but now I’m more into that.”

Now a veteran in a defensive backfield with plenty of youth, Surtain has matured and developed.

“I think Pat’s grown tremendously,” senior cornerback Trevon Diggs said. “He had tremendous ability, and last year, he was playing like he was young. He was just finding his way. But now, he improved, like he knows the plays, he knows calls, he knows adjustments, he knows offenses, he knows how to read routes. So, I’ve seen him grow tremendously.”

Shyheim Carter was Alabama’s starting Star last season, so why has the senior seemingly been replaced by a second-year player? Diggs explained why the 6-foot-2 Surtain is working in the slot.

“I feel like we have an advantage because quarterbacks normally read the Cover 2 and throw that seam route,” Diggs said. “It’s harder to get that over our heads because we’re taller and longer, so I feel like that’s our advantage. And we can move, as well.”

Carter stressed the importance of tackling when playing Star, which he believes Surtain can do.

“It’s like an extra linebacker,” Carter said on Thursday. “A defensive back but like an extra linebacker. Tackling is very important. He’s improved a lot. He definitely can play there.”

There are a lot of versatile players in Alabama’s secondary this fall, and Surtain is now a part of that list. As a young player, though, he is still getting pointers from the experienced defensive backs.

But Surtain is needing less and less help as he continues to progress.

“I feel like he was a better Star than I was, so just simple things,” Diggs said.

“I try to teach him things like route concepts and reading wide receiver alignments and stuff like that. It’s a hard position, and I feel like he knows the position way better than I do, so there’s not much I can teach him about it. But he’s starting to learn more and more from Shyheim and stuff like that, so I feel like he’s doing a real good job.”

Crimson Tide heads inside for Friday’s practice

Alabama practiced inside in full pads Friday.

Junior Landon Dickerson was at right guard alongside starting tackle [b]Jedrick Wills Jr., with Chris Owens at center. This is the second straight day we’ve seen this combination.

Redshirt freshman Jerome Ford (ankle) is back practicing, but not full-speed.

“We’re going to work him in and see what he can do and try to do more and more each day and try to see if we can get him back to 100 percent,” Nick Saban said. “He’s done really well before he was injured so we planned on him playing in the game, and if he’s healthy enough and the doctors clear him and we feel like he’s 100 percent, we’ll play him in this game. If not, we’ll have to wait and kind of see how he progresses. So it’s going to be more day to day at this point to try to make that judgement.”

Freshman Christian Harris (knee) was next to Dylan Moses for drills and looks set.

Absent was redshirt freshman defensive lineman Stephon Wynn (ankle). Earlier this week was seen in a black jersey for stretching.

Freshman end Antoine Alfano returned to practice on Thursday.

“He had a couple days for personal reasons,” Saban said.

Injury rundown

• Redshirt junior cornerback Nigel Knott: The only player yet to practice, he’s out indefinitely with what Nick Saban has only described as a medical issue.

• Senior interior linebacker Josh McMillon: Out indefinitely with a knee injury, could miss entire season.

• Freshman running back Trey Sanders: Out indefinitely with a left foot injury, could miss entire season. He’s been riding an exercise bike in Alabama’s weight room during practices.

This is the same as Travis drops on BamaOnLine as Since 2008, BamaOnLine.com's Instant Analysis has been a staple of Crimson Tide football coverage. That won't change in 2019, as we'll continue to provide Alabama fans with insight and interaction fresh from Tuscaloosa.

As for items we touched on during the latest edition of IA, they included:

* Absence of note on Saturday and other injury updates.
* Offensive line looks.

In the second team formation, Marcus Banks and Jalyn Armour-Davis were the outside cornerbacks, Shyheim Carter was the Star, Demarcco Hellams was the Money, Shane Lee was the only inside linebacker while Daniel Wright and Jordan Battle were the safeties.

— Head coach Nick Saban became animated, yelling after one of the defensive reps.

Alex Leatherwood was at left tackle, Evan Neal at left guard, Chris Owens at center, Landon Dickerson at right tackle and Jedrick Wills Jr. at right tackle. The second unit consisted of Scott Lashley at left tackle, Pierce Quick at left guard, Emil Ekiyor at center, Matt Womack at right guard and Tommy Brown at right tackle.

Alabama holds final practice prior to game week by Christopher Walsh
quote:

Crimson Tide wraps up month of prep to get set for Duke

With rain and storms in the area, Alabama practiced inside in full pads Saturday. Look for it to work mostly inside next week due to the season opener against Duke being played inside in Atlanta.

Senior Matt Womack was back at right guard, so whatever’s been bothering him for the past couple of weeks he looked like he was ready to resume his former spot.

Junior Landon Dickerson was not on the sideline for part of the media viewing, but came running back in midway through a drill. Womack stayed where he was, alongside starting tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. Chris Owens was at center the whole time.

Absent was among the defensive linemen were redshirt freshman Stephon Wynn (ankle) and true freshman Justin Eboigbe. freshman end Antoine Alfano returned to practice on Thursday.

Reporters got a good look at a dine package.

The first unit consisted of cornerbacks Trevon Diggs and Josh Jobe, safeties Xavier McKinney and Jared Mayden, Patrick Surtain II at star and senior Shyheim Carter.

The second team had Jalyn Armour-Davis and Marcus Banks at corner, Daniel Wright and Jordan Battle at safety, Scooby Carter at star and DeMarco Hellams. The linebackers were Shane Lee and Markail Benton.

After being limited earlier in the week senior Giles Amos rejoined team drills.

Injury rundown no changes from yesterday

• Redshirt junior cornerback Nigel Knott: Out indefinitely with what Nick Saban has only described as a medical issue.

• Senior interior linebacker Josh McMillon: Out indefinitely with a knee injury.

• Freshman running back Trey Sanders: Out indefinitely with a left foot injury

Alabama Football: Two more top Breakout Candidates for 2019 by Ronald Moody
quote:

Alabama football develops talent better than any college football program in the nation. There are literally, five stars on top of five stars in Tuscaloosa. Listed below are two potential breakout stars for 2019.

Expected starting inside linebacker Joshua McMillon, suffered a significant knee injury at the start of Alabama football fall practice. The redshirt senior bided his time as a special teams contributor, and when his opportunity came to seize the moment, McMillon was hurt. Redshirt sophomore Markail Benton immediately filled the position after McMillon went down. Unfortunately, Benton could not stave off another hot runner.
Impactful true freshman linebackers are a staple of Alabama football

True freshman Christian Harris lined up next to Dylan Moses at the Will linebacker position during the second scrimmage. Afterward, Nick Saban garnered high praise to the linebacker comparing him to Alabama greats Rolando McClain, Donta Hightower, and C.J. Mosley.

At the post scrimmage press conference, Saban spoke about Harris,

“He did a good job. I’d like to watch the film. He’s a football player. It’s important to him. He runs and hits people. Is he where he needs to be in terms of what to do, how to do it, why it’s important to do it that way?”

The vast potential for such a raw talent who played wide receiver, defensive backs and kick returner in high school is sky-high. Leaning on Moses, another Baton Rouge native, and defensive coordinator/inside linebacker coach Pete Golding has eased the jack of all trades’ transition and fast-tracked him to the starting inside linebacker position.

Harris came to campus as the number four inside linebacker prospect and number 71 recruit overall according to 247 Sports.

Hopefully, Harris can stay healthy and give the Crimson Tide a fast, hard-hitting linebacking duo. Once Harris truly understands the position, watch out.

Former Florida State offensive lineman Landon Dickerson has made quite the impression at fall camp. Standing at six-foot-six, Dickerson is a behemoth lineman. The redshirt junior is battling with Chris Owens for the starting center position.

A five-star recruit out of North Carolina, injuries prevented Landon from becoming a household name while at Florida State. When healthy, Dickerson was the Seminoles best lineman. He finished as an honorable mention All-American his freshman season.

Versatility is a strength for Dickerson. Adding his experience, skill, and talent to the offensive line could vault this unit from extremely good to historically great. The line is made up of massive space eaters with Dickerson leading the charge, Najee Harris and Brian Robinson will eat well during the season.

Expect Christian Harris and Landon Dickerson to see extended playing time in the season opener against Duke on August 31.
