I didn't realize we were paying him that much. If you're paying a basketball coach that kind of money he better be winning 25+ games, competing for conference championships, making the tournament, and advancing every year. That's got to be a top 15 salary in the country. What the frick was Battle thinking?

For like the past 6 games if I’ve had a good feeling, we win. If I have a bad feeling or no feeling at all, we lose. For some reason I have a good feeling about tomorrow. I hate getting my hopes up tho

Oh, I have no doubt we'll win tomorrow. Then in the next few games we'll blow another easy one.

This is the same as "rah rah" football coaches. I don't consider Avery a rah rah coach, but since he's coaching a bunch of freshmen, it turns into the same thing unless you really fight to combat it. They get up for big games and focus on what they're doing. Then fall asleep against inferior teams.

That, and I haven't always been blown away by CAJ's game planning and adjustments. But, I'm not a professional basketball coach, just a guy who likes hoops.

I defend Avery a lot on here, but I haven't either really. He seems to do a good job against teams that have one star player, and the team has defended pretty well under him. Other than that, I don't see much.

Yea - I think this season has a bad coacktail of issues. One is what you said above, I just don't think he's a great strategist. He's not awful, but he is flawed. However, I don't think most college coaches are great at it. He's just kind of average.

The other issue is I don't think he really has any idea how to deal with a team whose core are true freshmen who are young and immature and doing things for the first time. And, in his defense, he's literally never dealt with that before. There is nothing like it in the NBA. And it really effects a team in terms of how you practice, how you motivate, how you deal with the individuals, how you deal with lineups, etc etc. You can point to 3-4 games where it was clear our guys weren't mentally prepared from the tip, and Avery didn't really make any adjustments to it (and clearly didn't have a good plan to make them prepared).

But, those 2 issues together and causing a lot of our problems IMHO.

Looking at what the other NCAAT coaches got paid last year....59 of the coaches got paid less.

I'd have to see what year those other coaches are in and what state their program was in when they took over for this stat to really be meaningful.

It took Bruce four years at AU to get a good team. They didn't even make the NIT his first 3. It took Frank Martin five years at South Carolina. I'm going to see what happens with Avery before writing him off.

In time if he continues to be one of the top paid coaches, then yes he should consistently be putting together good teams. You can't expect a coach to create a good team out of the blue just cause he's getting paid a lot though.

Also, you realize this Auburn team that was discussed above is filled with guys who had the EXACT same issues our guys are currently having the last 2 years, right?

I can link you our old game threads talking about how youth this late in the season is no excuse for

-How AU has no coherent offense
-How AU shows no defensive effort
-How AU has shot selection is garbage
-How AU players are all Forrest Gump bball IQ
-How AU is inconsistent coming out flat/big

Yeah, iirc, it was/is just over $2.8M per year through 2021.

I've never been an Avery fan, but I recognize hiring a former NBA COY is a "splash" / big hire.

$2.8m for 6 years with 50% guaranteed though? That is an insane amount for a guy who hadn't coached in 2 years and has no CBB experience

If he's getting paid that much I think you pretty much can expect him to turn a program around in a hurry. There are a hundred much, much better coaches than Avery Johnson making less than that. But that's not even really the issue. We negotiated against ourselves for a guy who no one else wanted. It was straight out of the Joe Alleva playbook. We have set a baseline of just under $3M. That means if he has the kind of success I'm talking about he's going to making significantly more than that. Basketball coaches currently making in excess of $3.5M annually are Coach K, Cal, Bill Self, Sean Miller, and Tom Izzo.

Seth Greenberg:

To put in perspective how hard it is to be consistent with freshman no matter how talented they are look at @AlabamaMBB Beat @OU_MBBall and then follow it up losing to a good @MizzouHoops team at home. Being ready to play: preparing and competing consistently is the challenge
