In a pool interview later in the game, referee Shawn Smith confirmed that Carter’s ejection was due to him spitting on Dak. But NBC shared footage of Dak apparently spitting in Carter’s direction before Carter walked over to him, leading some to wonder if Dak is to blame for everything that happened.

Following the game, which Philly won 24-20, Dak told NBC analyst Jason Garrett (his former head coach) that he simply had to spit while he was talking to offensive lineman Tyler Booker. Carter happened to be close by and approached Dak, asking him if he spat at him. When Dak denied it, Carter spat back.
