The Los Angeles Times reported that there have been "at least 10" train heists out West since last March, with all but one netting Nike sneakers. The estimated combined value of the shoe thefts is $2 million.
In the most recent incident, perpetrators allegedly cut an air brake hose on a BNSF freight train in Perrin, Ariz. on Jan. 13. Once onboard, they grabbed 1,985 pairs of unreleased Nikes worth more than $440,000, many of which were the highly-anticipated Nigel Sylvester x Air Jordan 4s, a collaboration set for release in March.
Eleven people were apprehended and charged in the Jan. 13 burglary. Nine of them were determined to be Mexican citizens who had entered the United States illegally.
