LSU-Ole Miss Preview: Lane Kiffin Returns To Oxford For Massive SEC Showdown

No. 7 LSU hits the road for the first time this season on Saturday night for a highly anticipated Top-10 showdown against No. 8 Ole Miss in Oxford.

Both teams enter the matchup 2-0, but much of the attention surrounding Saturday's game will be on LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, who returns to Oxford for the first time since leaving Ole Miss for LSU during the Rebels' College Football Playoff run last season.

Saturday will also mark the SEC opener for both teams and the first Top-10 matchup between LSU and Ole Miss since 1962.

ESPN's College GameDay will also be in Oxford on Saturday morning, marking the second time in three games that LSU has been featured on the show.

Series History

Saturday will mark the 115th meeting between LSU and Ole Miss, with the Tigers holding a 66-44-4 advantage in the all-time series.

The rivalry dates back to 1894, and the home team has won 12 of the last 14 meetings.

Ole Miss won last year's matchup 24-19 in Oxford, while LSU won 29-26 in overtime in Baton Rouge in 2024.

Since the Magnolia Bowl trophy was introduced in 2008, LSU holds an 11-6 advantage.

What To Watch For

1. Lane Kiffin's return to Oxford

Kiffin will return to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for the first time since leaving Ole Miss to become LSU's head coach, and a hostile environment is expected after an eventful week leading up to the game.

Kiffin has tried to keep the focus on his players, saying Monday that the game is about LSU being prepared and playing well rather than his return.

Once the ball is kicked off, LSU will have to block out the emotion surrounding the matchup and handle what should be one of the most intense road environments of the season.

2. Sam Leavitt and the turnover battle

After being listed as doubtful on LSU's initial injury report Wednesday, quarterback Sam Leavitt was upgraded to questionable Thursday before being removed from the report Friday.

Leavitt has completed 41 of 66 passes for 574 yards and two touchdowns through two games while adding 135 rushing yards and five scores on the ground.

The biggest concern has been turnovers. Leavitt has thrown four interceptions, including three against Louisiana Tech last week.

Against an Ole Miss team capable of putting points on the board quickly, LSU can't afford to give the Rebels extra possessions.

3. Containing Trinidad Chambliss

LSU's defense has been dominant through the first two games, but Saturday will present its biggest challenge yet.

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has completed 44 of 62 passes for 561 yards with five touchdowns and one interception while also providing a threat with his legs.

LSU's defensive front has created consistent pressure through two games and will need to keep Chambliss contained in the pocket and prevent him from extending plays.

If Blake Baker's defense can make Ole Miss one-dimensional and force Chambliss to consistently beat LSU from the pocket, the Tigers should put themselves in a good position on the road.
