Former LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger has been named head coach at Father Ryan High School in Nashville.

Mettenberger was promoted to head coach after serving as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach last season. He replaces Brian Rector, who resigned in November after nine seasons with a 39-60 record. Per The Tennessean:
quote:

"Coach Mettenberger brings a wealth of experience to Father Ryan’s Football program from his time as a standout collegiate player at LSU to his career in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans, and his transition into coaching," Father Ryan principal Francisco M. Espinosa Jr. said. "His passion, leadership, and commitment to excellence will undoubtedly strengthen our program, and I am excited to see its continued growth and success under his leadership."

Mettenberger is in his second stint with the program, having previously coached at Father Ryan in 2021. He spent two years as a football analyst for Nick Saban at Alabama in 2022 and 2023 but returned to Nashville in March of last year after Saban's retirement in January of 2024. He also served as Hillsboro's offensive coordinator in 2020.

"I am honored by the opportunity to serve as a leader of Father Ryan’s historic Football program and foster the legacy of excellence created by those who came before me in this role," Mettenberger said. "I look forward to working with the coaches to help our student-athletes become the best version of themselves and to continue developing a program that makes the entire Father Ryan community proud to cheer on the Irish."
Mettenberger played at LSU from 2011-2013 and was a sixth-round draft pick by the Tennesse Titans in 2014.

good for him... at least he had the sense to let the career go vs. trying to continue hanging on when it wasn't in the cards for him

Gonna get flack for this, but Mett is the 3rd best LSU QB in the last 2 decades.

1a/1b: Burrow/Jayden
3: Mett
4: Nuss
5: Flynn

I always thought Flynn was better than Mett. Mett had the better arm strength but Flynn could scramble. I could be wrong.

Nope, you’re correct. It’s nice to have a canon, but even better in CFB if you have the football IQ and ability to scramble

Interesting moves for some of these former superstars. Here, a HS football coach makes an extra $20k.

Superstar is a stretch. Zach is well-known and a good player. Coaching high school worked out pretty well for Super Bowl champ Doug Pederson
