LSU backup quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. was taking first-team snaps in practice during the bye week while starter Garrett Nussmeier was resting up from his abdominal injury.
Head coach Brian Kelly spoke with reporters on Monday and said he was impressed with the way Van Buren Jr. commanded the offense in practice.

"He's beginning to command the offense the way I would like a starter to command it, not a backup," Kelly said.
"I want him to go in there with confidence and with communication. I thought he did a very good job when he was given the reins last week. Those were all really positive things."
"I think we see his skill set. He's got a live arm, he's got some elusiveness, he has some grittiness in him that you can see in game situations."
"We really like Mike. We knew what we were getting in the portal. It's just a matter of his maturation now as a freshman, coming into his own after being in this program. I think it was a really good week for him."
