Well .... it worked! The team holding the ball had lost three straight to the other team. The stalling team won the game.

The coach explained they wanted to draw the other team out. The other team didn't bite, but ultimately lost.

Brings back good memories. We did this when I was in high school at a tournament once. Coach thought we matched up better in man so told us to hold the ball until they came out.. and they never did. I think score was like 4-2 at half lol. We ended up winning with a score of something like 14-8 but I think half our points were from free throws because the other teams coach kept getting technicals. 17 year old me thought it was awesome!

They are trying to force the other team to play man.

More than likely, the team holding the ball was either outmatched or wanted the other team to have to come out and play man as opposed to sitting in zone.

Excellent reporting, Larry! Thanks for including if the team that attempted this bold strategy went on to win.

Sorry don’t know how to post a link on this. Here’s the full story. The team who held the ball for the first quarter ended up winning the game.
