Florida's Keyontae Johnson Is Reportedly Facing $5 Million Decision
© Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports
Florida basketball player Keyontae Johnson collapsed during a game last December is deciding whether to try and get medically cleared to play professionally or cash in a $5 million insurance policy.

Two people with knowledge of Keyontae Johnson’s situation told The Associated Press that the senior forward’s policy went into effect in July 2020, five months before he crashed face-first onto the court at Florida State. Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because of privacy concerns.

The 22-year-old Johnson hasn’t practiced or played since, and according to one of the people, the Gators don’t anticipate the 6-foot-5, 230-pound Virginian being medically cleared to return this season.

“He’s very much a big part of our program,” Florida coach Mike White said last week. “No change in status at all. Not practicing. Coaching, helping organize practice, prepare for practice, doing some officiating. He’s active in drill work.

“He’s getting a taste of some individual meetings with guys at times, trying to motivate, trying to hold (guys) accountable. He’s doing whatever he can. He’s an unselfish guy. He’s a winner. He’s always going to be, and he’s doing whatever he can to help his teammates and to help us as a staff.”

Life changing money in exchange for giving up on your dream. Brutal. Not sure what his health condition is, that's an important factor. Feel for the guy.

Take the money, finish school and possibly look at coaching. I’d imagine Florida would give him his start as an assistant and who knows what could happen after that.

Pretty sad to be faced with accepting a buyout for your lifelong dream. Without the collapse last year he was definitely on trajectory to be at least a bench player in the NBA. The wise decision, though, is to accept the insurance settlement, complete his education, and make good investments and decisions from here. Best of luck, Keyontae.

I’m sure he’ll cash it in, invest wisely and live comfortably for the rest of his life.

He should definitely cash it. It’s extremely difficult to make it into the NBA. And that’s not even factoring the health risk to not only the quality or length of his life, but also the unlikelihood that an nba team would even clear him medically.
