Big time Coaches are not going to be drawn by money alone. They will want a big time commitment from the school on facilities and support staff. AU tried to throw a lot of money at Mike Brey a few years ago, he laughed at them.
We gave Grant basically everything he asked for when he was hired, hell we moved every program but gymnastics out of the arena for him. We'll do what we must for the next guy.

We'll give the next guy the gymnastics team, too. It's time to take basketball seriously.

you can offer what you want. you are still not getting a big name. it is not like grant was coveted by any blue blood program

Not contributing much but it's a real shame it didn't work out for Grant there. Still can't believe he hasn't done more in such a down SEC and how he doesn't recruit better. His class this year is meh. And I say the same about our coach. Young, energetic, handsome black coach that plays an attractive style.. I don't get it.
I thought he was a bomb hire and was super jealous when we wound up with Florida's ball boy.
I don't see him hanging around. Bama will get antsy b/c of Pearl, Tyndall, LSU/A&M recruiting etc.
They do always seem to get a legit guy though, on paper at least.

Said regarding the Alabama football program circa December 2006.

Florida was likely to offer Anthony Grant the job when Donovan left to be the coach of the Orlando Magic
auburnphan23 committed to being wrong...all the time
quote:
He immediately wanted to return to the University of Florida. So, he called Foley, who was on his way to Richmond, Va., to likely offer the job to Donovan's former 10-year assistant, Anthony Grant of VCU.

Who was a hotter name out there at the time? Asking honestly because I can't remember.
They've gotta go mid major and if you can get the #1 mid major guy out there, how is that not a success?
The only reason Arkansas got a non mid major after our first epic mid major failure was b/c he was family. Otherwise we'd be doing the same thing.
The only programs in the SEC getting big names would likely be UF and UK. And even UF might be a stretch unless they got Shaka, who is still mid major. It's been proven otherwise at LSU, UT, A&M, Mizzou, Miss St etc etc.

The only name I recall being hotter was Marshall (who's not moved after 5 more years).
Grant was certainly the hottest name of anyone likely to move.
At the time, attracting Grant was a hallmark success for Alabama basketball to get the hottest mid major name who had no Alabama connections.

Yeah, there's hardly 10 programs in the country that are going straight up get a very successful non mid major coach to drop everything and move unless he's having some problems with AD etc . . .
Donovan/Florida is a good example because it shows that if the coach is that successful then it doesn't really matter that it's a traditional blue blood program.
The point being that he can simply stay where he is because, outside of the few Kentucky, Kansas types, the "tiers" of recruiting ground/facilities etc don't necessarily inhibit success the way they do in college football.

I would just like to point out that for all of the shite talking that Auburn is doing about Bama's basketball program
*Auburn hasn't had a coach end his tenure at Auburn with an above .500 SEC record since 1963
*Auburn has only won the conference 3 times (Alabama 7)
*Auburn has only made the NCAA Tourney 8 times (Alabama 20)
*Auburn's winning percentage in the SEC is .455 all time (Alabama's is .565)
plus you spent 90M on this
...now i will go take a shower for being on the side of Alabama in anything

Well thanks anyways Godfather. AND our Football program made $33M profit last year while AU football lost $13.5M. The point is we have the cash to do whatever we want to and AU is hemorrhaging. We'll back any great BB coach with a fat bank account.

IMO, when Grant couldn't keep either DeMarcus Cousins or Eric Bledsoe at home, that was a big red flag. If you can't keep your in-state stars, how are you going to recruit to the level needed to be among the elite?

You guys got Archie from us. You can have him.
Malik Monk on the other hand.. Will suck if he goes blue.

Alabama completely frickin owns Auburn in basketball. In fact, Alabama may be farther ahead of Auburn in basketball than they are in football. Complete ownage.
