Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel and his family are now working with Texas A&M to trademark his nickname "Johnny Football." This is not an effort for either the Manziels or A&M to profit off of Johnny’s nickname. Rather, they would use the trademark status to prevent others from doing so.

As someone who hates seeing colleges and vendors profiting off the name and likeness of special college athletes i.e. honey badger, I love this move.

I love this move. I would love to see how much LSU made off Mathieu or UF off of Tebow. These kids deserve some of the cut.

If they aren't making profit on this, why do it? Its stupid and arrogant of them.

I don't blame him one bit. Trust me, the SEC, ESPN and aTm are all profiting from him. Best believe he's doing it to cash in. He's got potential to be a Heisman winner, why not do this.

The kid is going to rewrite the record books. He is protecting his brand name and brand potential.

It's not arrogant at all. It's smart.

Considering that at least one company has applied for a trademark for "Johnny Football" already, they absolutely have to do this. He should be the only one to profit from his name when he's no longer under NCAA restrictions.

well since he can't collect a cent personally or vicariously i don't see why it's even up for discussion. pretty pointless, i mean if you're a athlete of any kind and obviously going professional there's always going to be people profiting off of you
