Even though ILB and tight end are the position groups where we least need somebody to really step up, I've got Zayden Walker. One of the beat writer nerds wrote that he looks way thicker in the upper body in preseason camp than he did last year.

It'd definitely qualify as a hot take, but frick it whatever, I think that Zayden Walker has the potential to be the biggest gamewrecker at ILB that Kirby has had since Reuben Foster. Last year you could tell that he didn't know what he was doing yet, so Kirby just put him in on third down and told him to go kill the quarterback. It's not often when Herbstreit is shocked, but when Walker ran down Ty Simpson in the SECCG, you could tell that Herbstreit was shocked.

I'm fully with you on Zayden being a potential star with an incredible ceiling that should be a wrecking ball for us. On this though:

I just can't get behind, considering we've had Roquan and Nakobe in the last 10 years. Those are likely the 2 best linebackers UGA has ever fielded so I'm not quite ready to put a youngin with limited experience in that same air yet

eta: love that camera angle in the OP too, haven't seen that before.

Roquan and Dean were more sideline to sideline linebackers. Dean was basically Roquan without the crazy country strong hands. Roquan had elite retard strength in his hands.

I'm talking about somebody who gets strip sacks and big hits and forced fumbles – a cross between Greg Blue and Jalon Walker. I'm not predicting that Walker will have a better pro career than Roquan but I will for Dean.

I know it's a hot take for a player who only played on third down, but Walker definitely looks the part and has the pedigree. Walker and Randall Godfrey are probably the only two times we got the number 1 ILB recruit in the country.

…Who are you predicting to be our next great player, or are you playing it conservative and hedging on other people's bold predictions?

if you read any other site or any practice reports or pretty much anything coming out of team practices it's typically the same 7-10 guys constantly being repeated as "breakout candidates". I suppose it may be cliche to say one of them? A guy like zykie helton for instance even though a TFr has been talked about constantly since the spring. Someone like Talyn Taylor hasn't accomplished anything yet but has been raved about for 2 years. So it's almost like cheating to use guys like that.

If forced to pick a maybe less heralded guy I might say Tyriq Green. Our secondary is loaded so that doesn't naturally lend itself for him to get a lot of PT but he's apparently looked great and versatile as hell.

Instead of predicting a random breakout star that has yet to do much, I'm MUCH more interested and excited to see the natural progression of guys we already know about take it to the next level. Guys like Demello, Dinkins, Q.Johnson, Gaston, Bowens, Elyiss, etc have all shown on the field that they're legit but I'm pumped to see them be even better.

THANK YOU for putting yourself out there and answering the thread topic question lol.

…For whatever it's worth my backup breakout player is Savovie White-Helton, even though he'll be on the field for less than half of our snaps, because we'll go entire seasons sometimes without a wide receiver play at least half the snaps on offense, and one day I hope this is no longer the case.

The beat writer nerds got to watch way more than 5 minutes of practice on Monday. One of them wrote that Isaiah Gibson was practicing with the linemen. Isaiah Gibson is a big mystery man right now.

If we have a solid running game and utilitze our TE's as much as we should, we won't/can't have a 1000 yd receiver. At least not in 12 games. With 16 games who knows.

Roquan was the best ILB in cfb history. He made 133 out of 134 tackle attempts during the 2017 season, including the best tackle I’ve ever seen on 3rd and 1 in OT of the Rose Bowl. Speaking Reuben Fosters name in the same sentence is an insult to the GOAT.
