I'm really getting tired of the ACC schools dragging the rest of college football through the mud. They need to get their shite together. Colleges aren't football factories...they're centers of higher education.
That is all.
That is all.

The News and Observer Publishing Co. sued UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt on Thursday, seeking access to a spreadsheet or database with information that could offer a link to the origins of lingering athletic and academic scandals.
The lawsuit was filed in Wake County Superior Court the same day that Folt publicly accepted the university’s responsibility for bogus classes benefiting student athletes that were offered through the African and Afro-American Studies Department. She also acknowledged a failure of academic oversight.

The school can redact the students' names, but they are going to end up having to release that spreadsheet. I think UNC's lawyers are just stalling and trying to posture, they're a public institution, and while there is some truth to the privacy claim, if the names are redacted it's legal to release that data and the school can't just say no. The publisher will win this if it even makes it to court.

If someone runs with this to investigate other schools, it could be the beginning of the end as we know it....

quote:
DURHAM, N.C. — The Student Athletes Human Rights Project filed a complaint Friday with the federal Office for Civil Rights alleging the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill discriminated against male athletes, especially black, male athletes, in assigning more of them to so-called 'paper classes.' In directing athletes to those classes, the complaint says, the university deprived them of the same quality education available to other student-athletes.
"The data suggests black student-athletes are disproportionately enrolled in paper courses when compared to white student-athletes," the group wrote in its complaint to the United States Department of Education.
The group backed up the complaint with data from reports both internal and external as the university looks into allegations that courses in the Department of African and Afro-American Studies catered to student athletes, requiring only a paper and no classroom time. An inquiry conducted by former Gov. Jim Martin in 2012 found problems in more than 200 courses dating to at least 1997, including forged signatures on grade rolls, unauthorized grade changes and poor oversight.

Obviously the academic standards are jacked in this case, but are they really saying it was discrimination that more black male athletes were signed up for "paper classes"? Does that mean they were forced to take them?
If they voluntarily enrolled because they thought it would be easier for them, the discrimination claim is ridiculous.

CNN) -- A U.S. congressman is questioning whether the NCAA failed to hold the University of North Carolina accountable during a 2012 academic fraud investigation and is demanding answers from NCAA brass.
If he doesn't get them, he'll call for congressional hearings and subpoena NCAA President Mark Emmert, Rep. Tony Cardenas told CNN.

Foo... Seriously...what that part is about is people are getting rich off of kids they have no intention of educating under the guise of education, which makes the whole schtick work.

It's the responsibility of the students to get the most out of their opportunity. The universities give them that shot in exchange for their time on the field.
Many student athletes have taken advantage of their time on campus while many more wasted it by treating it like a speedbump on their way to the NFL, which didn't pan out for most.
No one forced them in to that situation, so it is hard for me to pity them.

Do you think Reuben Foster gets to sign up for his own classes at Bama? Just Reuben and the counselor, plot out an academic path, Reuben always liked watching documentaries about space on Discovery Channel, wants to major in physics or astronomy so he can learn more about that.

So, you state that a naive 17 year old who never would be in college, unless they were really fast is to blame... But the guys who make millions off them ... who make fake college classes for no other reason than to keep the guise going that this is about education are doing nothing more than giving these guys a great opportunity?

Are you telling me that the kids are forced to choose one major over another? Or, are they simply "encouraged" to take an easier one, which they often do?
Posted on 4/9/14 at 11:18 pm to Peter Buck
quote:Yes. That's what I'm saying. The ultimate blame rests squarely on the shoulders of the student-athletes who, of their own volition, choose that path.

Are you telling me that the entire paradigm of college athletics is a complete and total mystery to these kids before they reach campus? They don't have connections with other students who have walked the path before them? They don't get a heads up from their high school coaches and advisers? They don't get advice from their parents and relatives?
You make it seem like these kids are kidnapped and forced into labor camps against their will. They get a sweet life of partying and debauchery as they glide through college while earning a degree in the field they choose and getting an internship for becoming a professional athlete. All for free, when they would not have been able to do that on their own.
So yeah... I blame the kids if they didn't care enough to get information about what they were getting in to.

Then I promise you, you are ill informed. Some do, but those are kids who could get in college without being super tall or fast. What you still are not understanding is that schools must graduate a certain % of these kids, else they lose millions. They will not let them become Biology Majors because they know they would likely flunk out and cost the school money.

This. The AA at most schools insist on picking the major for most athletes, so they can have the best chance to stay eligible.
