Why does UGA not command respect?

I saw a thread on the Rant and I hear this all the time that UGA is the most delusional fan base when it comes to how we view ourselves.

But the numbers don't lie. We are 10th all time in wins among the FBS schools. We have 2 legit MNCs and could claim 5 by Bama math. We are third in SEC titles and only one away from being tied for second with UT at 13. We have a shitload of bowl victories.

So I ask, why don't we get the respect that other programs do?

We haven't won a national title since 1980?
And nowdays, anytime we play a big game - we shite the bed?

It's not that hard...

Because UGA usually blows it in the Big Games. Hopefully that is not the case this time. I am still calling 35-17 Dawgs! Go Dawgs!!!

It is that on National TV we get killed whether it is USCe, Bosie, OK St, Bama or the fact everyone knows we can not beat the gators over the last 20 years.

Okay. This is a stupid idea imo. Not your post rattle, but the idea we "choke" in big games.

I think the idea of us choking in big games comes from the fact that in the past 4-5 years we really haven't been that good of a football team. 2002-2005 teams had no problem winning a big game. Hell back then Richt was known for going on the road and winning tough games. Excluding 2007 and maybe this year, I don't think any UGA team has been above average since 2005. And while one could make the arguement that's the coaches fault, I think it's just the cyclical nature of sports. It's hard to be right all the time. Basically the point of this drunken rant is to say we haven't "choked" these big games, we've just sucked and gotten beat by a better team.

Respect has to be earned. As already stated we haven't won a NC since 1980. Just recently as after the SC game, fans were still calling for Richt to be fired. In spite of Richt's overall solid body of work, over the last 5 years our record against ranked teams has been bad. Fans of other teams seem to think we are satisfied with mediocrity and many of our fans feel the same way. Our administration hasn't been willing to go all in to win a championship. They seem content with doing well enough to keep the money flowing in. This attitude seems to extend to other sports as well. Our basketball program hasn't been relevant in many years. Our baseball program has gone downhill as well. All this in the state of Georgia loaded with talented recruits. In short, we have the money, we have the recruiting base but we don't have an administration that has been willing to pay top dollar to get winning coaches into our sports programs.

Hopefully this will change long term under McGarity but we haven't seen any dynamic changes so far. As for Richt, hopefully he finally gets us a championship but Bama lead by Saban is a huge hurdle. Our lack of depth created by being reduced to just 75 scholarship players doesn't inspire confidence. This is clearly a recruiting/player management issue. Richt obviously has not allowed sufficiently for attrition. Honestly if he does pull off a NC, it will be a minor miracle.

We're are getting a little respect on the Bama board surprisingly. A few of their folks are predicting a UGA win and most predict a tight game.

I actually think we get more respect than we have earned over the years. We have never been an elite team except for the Herschell years, at least not in my lifetime. Florida gets more respect than we do but they have been an elite team for extended periods of time in the last 20 or so years. We simply haven't been anything more than above average. That could change this weekend.....

Because despite being 11-1 they still haven't won a playoff game.... oh sorry wrong team...

I guess the above statement still applies. the current SEC standards are all MNC and until the Dawgs win one it will be hard to come by. Winning or making it the Atlanta is no longer the goal or standard for the conference and thus the lack of respect. Plus UGA does not have a head coach that wrecks motorcycles, eats grass, has a napoleon complex or that yells and stares down anything that moves.

We should put mitchell back to return punts. We need to stop this fair catching stuff. We need to put todd gurley back to return kickoffs..because he did return one for a TD!! We got to pull out all the tricks sat. we cant worry about injuries. I expect bama will drop a lot of guys into pass coverage like fla did...Thats when murray needs to take what the defense gives us. Sometimes murray has to take off running with the football. If he does i hope he won't fumble. I still think we win...but we are going to have suprise them with some stuff we haven't did all year..like return punts

Most traditional SEC powerhouse schools have crystal in the BCS era. We're the glaring exception. It's that tendency to roll over and give up in the big games that has led to that outside impression of the team. In many ways, not winning the big game has become our brand. I'd venture to say it began with the '08 Blackout.

Luckily we have a chance to begin changing that perception in less than 36 hours. Even better is that we get the opportunity to exorcize those demons on the field with the team that began their ascent by causing our decline.

I actually like the fact that this is such a BIG DEAL to the players and the fans. How much more excited and energized is the fan base of the team that has their first legit shot at a title, as opposed to the teams that end up perennially winning? I'm glad that for Bama it's a mindset of "We do this like every year." Our guys are going to have to get the eye of the tiger, want it more than the Tide, and bust them in the mouth and take what Bama assumes is theirs already.

I think our boys are more than up for the task.

I think this can be summed up with the following clip from Rocky IV. Rocky of course are the Bulldogs. Lets say Paulie is Richt and Duke is Grantham. The Russian is The Crimson Tide. The short evil genius midget Russian trainer will of course represent Saban.

I'm thinking it's b/c as much of the SEC prides itself on tradition, it's also about, "what have you done recently?"

Ole Miss had some good teams and I believe some championships back in the day. However, their program has been viewed as down since we beat them in '09 when they were #3 in the country. Their whole season fell apart after that and nobody besides them knows where Snead is.

Doubtful.. Most will chalk it up to our weak schedule. You want respect? We need to win it all with a tough schedule and not drop an egg.

nobody will go undefeated in the sec no matter what kind of schedule you play...who cares if we dont earn any respect. if we beat bama and ND...then we have earned respect within ourselfs...and at the end of the day thats all that matters
