Why Do I Like Mark Richt?

Coach Richt cared more for his players and the University of Georgia than he cared about his own personal ambition. Thinking of all the players he brought to Georgia and mentored is what I like so much about him.
Kolton Houston is a primary example. Richt stuck with him and kept him on the team while patiently (and sometimes impatiently) fighting the NCAA for him. Seeing Houston finally take the field in a game was special. Maybe Kolton hasn't been the greatest OL ever, but he has given his all for Richt and Georgia.
I'm posting this because I just saw the Luke Turner story about the Rice player and thought of the many scholarship offers Richt honored for players just like him.
If you hate Richt, just ignore this and hate him on another post.

I had my temper tantrum yesterday with the whole rings comment as that really grinded my gears.
Overall, I respect Richt and I wish him sucess at tU. I always held out hope that he would win the big one at UGA but it was not meant to be. Excited about the direction we are heading in.

Your sig line would have read 14 games below .500 in 2000.

I don't think anyone hates Richt, I just think a lot of us (myself included) never thought he would be the one to get Georgia over the hump to the next level. We needed to find someone who could. Maybe Kirby will be the guy, maybe he won't. But I am glad the AD is at least trying.

I think Richt would be the perfect DIII coach. DI where winning a natty is the ultimate goal of the recruits, the school and the fans not so much.

Don't hate him at all. Just got tired of seeing his teams underachieve at the only thing they do. Name one game in the last several years that CMR won that mattered and I'll name you several that he lost that mattered. He had 15 years to prove that he could take UGA football to the next level and he didn't do it, in spite of having the best players in the league. Time to let someone else give it a try. Best wishes CMR.

Well, I agree. I'm looking forward to the new coaching staff and the future. It was time for a change several years ago. Glad it finally came about.

Richt took a high profile HC job in like 3 days. He got over it real quick like. We need to as well.

Well he took it from the Goof and Donnan level to the next level. It's just the level above that one that he missed.

I don't think there is a true Dawgs fan that hates CMR.
That said, I also think that a Dawgs fan that understands the game even a little bit knows that his time was up.
CMR got more than a few extra years of tenure because he was respected greatly. He didn't get results. Missionaries, youth workers, Sunday school teachers, social workers, and guidance counselors don't make $4 million per year.
CMR was being paid $80,000 per WEEK. These helping professionals would love to make that in a YEAR.

I love and respect Coach Richt. And in spite of his lack of a NC, he was the best football HC in UGA history IMO. Richt had 4 deficiencies that again IMO kept him from championship status:
1. His roster management was not good. He just couldn't produce a complete team; we were always lacking in several positions on every team.
2. Recruiting. He often could not reel in difference makers within our own state and his stubborn insistence on not over-signing meant that we did not account for normal attrition leading to not having a full roster.
3. He did not instill good team discipline on or off the field. We racked up critical penalties and his players were too often involved with off-field incidents.
4. He too often failed to hire successful assistants and in the case of Martinez he apparently let a personal relationship prevent him from firing an assistant with poor performance.

Two bad hires. Both good recruiters, neither talented where it counted. Smart has qualities that we haven't had in a long time; high IQ, energy, passion for excellence. Guys like Smart won't allow failure in their lives. Winning is in their DNA. Smart is Saban's "mini-me". He's a good hire.

I like Richt but he really pissed me off lots of times. When Bauta and Reggie Davis weren't benched at halftime of the Florida game I was ready for change.
I am going to pull for Miami. Maybe Mark will wake up and stop being an idiot.
