Dooley was mediocre at best. Outside of 1980 to 1982, he was very average and even in those golden years where he had Walker, he should have won more than one.
Thank god for Richt and Kirby. Richt created the foundation and Kirby won the championship with sustaining power even without a generational talent.

Richt was a damn good coach through those 81 games. Being compared to him during that point in his career is a compliment.
He never got the luck it takes to win one, but he was a damn good coach those first few years especially.
And the 2012 SECCG was such a shame for him.

That’s a great point. Richt turned Georgia back into a program that just needed an extra push to get to the level Kirby has achieved.
I don’t think Kirby would’ve reached the mountain top within 6 years if he had taken over in the 90’s.

I've been barking about that some over there the last couple of days. That comparison probably made me madder than hearing "1980" for the millionth time in my life. When Kirby got us to the playoffs in 17-18 we all knew at that point what we potentially had in him and it wasn't another CMR.

So Dooley was actually on a somewhat hot seat in '80. The '76 championship team was a distant memory at that point. I think the year before in '79 he dropped the home opener to Wake Forest who is awful but back then ATROCIOUS. So he was very lucky to have HW and others that won it in 80.
But here is the thing you have to remember about CVD and those before him.......they didn't have to coach in an era of a 24/7 Sports Center microscope like coaches do today. I love CVD but he did have a bunch of 6,7,8 win seasons sandwiched in between some really great SEC championship teams. Early in his career like CMR he knocked off some giants early on like Bama and Michigan so he had a buzz around him in the '60s. Auburn wanted him to come home but he stayed. Like CMR he wins a couple of SEC titles early as well. All the stars aligned in the early '80s for him though which separated him from CMR in that he was able to punch through and win one ultimately probably keeping him in Athens for the rest of his career.

I agree. Coaches were less under a microscope during the 80s than they are now. There were a lot of things you could get away before ncaa regulations patched things up.
That is what makes someone like Saban so great. He has coached consistently and won during several eras in CFB.
