I have a lot of family and friends that went to Tech. I was telling them they need to give Key the HC job ASAP. That guy went toe to toe with Kirby for 2 quarters and if that botched punt and turnover in the 2nd half had not happened it would have been closer. He went 4-4 and beat 2 top 20 teams. I was surprised to see they are going after Frtiz. Apparently the new AD wants to make a statement hire; but with a 62 year old HC?

My guess is Fritz was contacted after Coach 404 was let go and before Key showed he knew what he was doing. I think Key did wonders with what he had. Can you imagine if Jahmyr Gibbs was still there?

I read they interviewed Bill Clark yesterday on the cc board.

I don't mean to knock key because I think he is quality.

But I think his success on Saturday was more indicative of his coordinators and less his presence on the sideline.

They were scripted very well. But in-game? Meh.

Tech is really off-base if they don't hire him. If Key gets solid coordinators and recruiters it seems like the sky is the limit playing in the ACC coastal. Going 4-4 with what he had to deal with is coach of the year type stuff. At least we won't have to deal with him; I really don't want to play that guy heading up Tech as a coach again.

Seriously?
Take tech off the frickin schedule. That’s pathetic and we don’t need a bunch of injuries in a meaningless game while being seccg and playoff bound pretty much every year for the foreseeable future

Fritz doesn’t run a triple option.

eh idk about all that. Tech scored on their opening drive and didn't get antoher point until the game was well in hand with a couple mintues left (on a trick play) against all backups.

Sure they play harder than before and they look better than they did with collins but that's a remarkably low bar to begin with. I also don't agree with the "what if they didn't botch a punt or drop balls" argument, considering that we had 2 TDs wiped off the board pluw another who knows how many points on the ladd PI and the brock facemask penalty.

Agreed.

Both of their TDs relied on 4th down conversions.

They were fairly close to being shut out (shoulda coulda woulda... we should have made those plays. Credit to tech for executing on their 4th down mulligans. It sure did change the score board).

Do we really wanna replace em with a big intersectional game the week before
the SECCG?

The game is usually over at half or the 3rd qtr and seems to be played at noon and our potential opponents are usually involved in more difficult games with a SEC rival later in the day.In theory it should work to our benefit. It was one of the reasons I was pretty much stunned by Bama's performance in last year's game.

Weird. I'm wondering why I thought that, if not.

Paul Johnson > Jeff Monken both did. Fritz followed them when Monken went to Army. He runs a hybrid spread. Though, it appears we do not need to concern ourselves since they hired Key.

I mean...yeah, what's the problem with that?

The rumor (from folks with locker room access) is that that elevated Chris Weinke up to calling the offense in the last 2 games of the season and Chip Long was only the OC by name. That was a Brent Key decision if true.

Key is pretty well connected in the south so it'll be interesting to see what he does with his staff. Instead of giving Tulane a few million for Fritz's buyout, we can use it to build a quality staff.

Not that it matters in this particular series as Kirby as UGA living on another planet, but relevance in the shitty ACC would be a good start.

I haven't watched but the 1 game for tech.

But it has been whispered that Jim Chaney (who knows the defense well) scripted the first drive.

Results may not be typical.

Yes, his offense is triple option based with a bigger emphasis on passing. You ought to know; you likely saw it in action back in 2015 at Sanford. Took us until OT to win. Southern didn’t pass much that night, but they did run all over us for well over 200 yards rushing.

I wasn't aware that Fritz had Chaney and Weinke on his staff. It sounds like their offense is already set. I watched the Tech - Ole Miss game and it seemed like Kiffin just told his team to stop scoring. I think Key will do well at Tech. The ACC coastal and ACC in general is kind of a joke these days and I expect he will get 7 or 8 wins next year.

7/8 wins in the ACC should be the floor for a competent coach in this state. Gailey managed to stay slightly above that floor, while Johnson managed to get them to the likely peak of their capabilities mixed in with a couple of bad years, but we haven't found the coach that can do both.

ACC divisions are going away after this season so it'll be harder to make the ACCG as a top 2 team, but Tech really shouldn't have too many years outside the top 5 with the right coach.

yah, I think he will have success based on what he did in 8 games. It's funny how everyone, including Tech fans, had written off the Tech football program broken beyond repair. They can have as much success as any of the other non-Clemson ACC schools like WF, NCST, UNC, UVA, etc.
