Driving cross country next week and the first stop is in Athens. I’ve been there one time in 2009 for the football game that year and loved it but that’s it. What would you suggest for someone who will be there for one night?

how old are you? what kind of things do you want to do? school is out now, so it will be a slightly different vibe.

cali n titos, baseball regional, bar hop downtown would be my move next saturday.

Check the Flagpole calendar for musical acts at Georgia Theatre, Foundry, and 40 Watt to seenif anything piques your interest. Georgia Theatre Rooftop isn’t a bad way to spend an evening downtown. Definitely going to be more chilled out this month than your average fall weekend but that’s usually a plus in my book (throngs of obnoxious college kids drinking socially for the first time ever usually isn’t my thing): LINK

Yes depends on what you want to do and is it just the night some of the day? Younger crowd older crowd?

School is out so not a lot students around.

If you are looking for some higher end good food.
1. South Kitchen (downtown)
2. SeaBear (Bottle works)
3. Marker 7 (Five Points)
4. Five and Ten (Fancy place on Milledge)

More Laid back
1. Trapeze
2. 5 bar

Really laid back
1. Teds Most best
2. Amici
3. Cali n titos
4. Grind house.
Five points has some nice eateries.

Really just walk around Athens tons of choices.

For desert
Insomnia (Cookie place)
Alumni Cookie Dough

During the day
Creature Comfort or Akademia breweries
Terrapin as well

State Botanical Garden, etc etc

Roadhouse is a good dive. Manhattan has a dive feel but attracts more of a hipster crowd. There’s also Nowhere, Flanagan’s, and Cutters

Pretty sure Georgia Bar is still gone which, in its day, was king of the dives

i would never call flanagan's a dive bar, interesting. also not very divey per se, but better for someone older would be allgood and walkers/blue sky.

im trying to modify my hypothetical plan if i were in athens next saturday and the weather was good.

- breakfast @ mama's boy if possible
- walk around downtown/north campus just checking shite out to plan my afternoon/night
- lunch @ cali n titos
- baseball regional for a couple hours. i personally would watch uga play, but if i were a non uga fan just visiting for one day, wouldnt want to spend too much time here and would just hit up whatever fit into my schedule.
- head downtown to creature comforts for one or two
- sunset on the georgia theatre rooftop
- dinner at last resort (no reservations, so get your name in accordingly but shouldnt be too bad with school out)
- bar hop to wherever your heart desires. if i was by myself and didn't know a soul, allgood, walker's, and cutters would be good stops.
- late night, would definitely go to some combination of mags, sandbar, boars head (a lock), bourbon for a little rowdier energy/nostalgia
- tough call between hot dog guy on college and broad, the grill, barberitos (not if i had cali n titos earlier), maybe even waffle house for the 2am meal

god, im depressed now

Consider Mayflower downtown for breakfast instead of Mamas Boy. Not that Mamas Boy is bad (it’s actually pretty good) but it’s usually overt crowded with a long wait and little parking (there are also two of them now, the original being off Oconee st). If you’re into music, though, the famous railroad trestle on the cover of REM’s Murmur album is right behind the original Mamas Boy and the church steeple where they played their first gig is somewhat across the street. So that’s cool.

suit yourself. i think it's something you gotta see. i guess with school out, i would not recommend it, though.

im not suggesting you spend too much time there, but if i visit a college town, i like to see the shite that the students are doing. it's a beautiful place in my eyes, and ill never forget it.

forgot about toppers in my itinerary. pencil that in after bourbon
