Smart's lame defense of Fromm...and other thoughts

Seems like Smart could have just come out and said that Fromm played like shite. Instead, he started off by defending him (yet criticizing him at the same time):
“All the struggles weren’t his, he made some third down throws I thought were really good,” Smart said, “And a couple times he ends up getting sacked, and he’s got to make a decision to get rid of the ball, but we don’t run the right route on one of them."
“There’s a lot of pressures they [LSU] run that are hard to pick up,” Smart said, “and I was very concerned with that coming into the game.”
“Some of those you’ve got to escape and get rid of the ball,” Smart said. “I didn’t think it was the protection as much as it was making decisions quicker, getting rid of the ball quicker. And at the end of the day, don’t be in third-and-long.”
Fromm's issues in the LSU game aside, the offensive strategy and play-calling were abysmal. I have to wonder if Smart is himself frustrated with Chaney. He seemed to be at other points earlier in the season but it didn't matter against inferior competition.
Regardless of how we fare the rest of this year, I hope that Smart is more like Saban than Richt in terms of upgrading assistants when it's in the best interest of the program. Richt's loyalty caused him to retain people way past the point when he should have let them go. I hope Smart takes a more ruthless approach.

He is right, LSU basically did the same thing Holtz did to QC where they would show one coverage and jump into another at the snap. This one was on Chaney and Kirby for not scraping their plan and forcing the d to adjust to us not the other way around.

I agree, the coaching staff was at fault this game. Kirby is young and still has to learn things as a head coach. I expect that they will let JF play more at QB after this debacle.

This was so frustrating.
Necessary adjustments are what separate good coaches from great coaches. I expected the second half Junkyard Dawgs to come out ready to dominate, but they didn't. They kept running the same plays that didn't work the first half.
Come on Kirbs, you know the definition of insanity.

Well what did you want him to say? It doesn't make lot of sense to throw a 19 year old under the bus. That helps no one.

Do you lose Pittman if you lose Chaney?

Play calling was very suspect, but that happens. This is the first game of the season where no matter what play we called, we couldn’t seem to execute it or it wasn’t effective enough, at least outside of the long drive early on.

19 carries 128 yards

That doesn’t negate my point. We tried a lot of plays that didn’t work for us throughout the game, including several trick or misdirection plays that didn’t get us what we wanted.

Holyfield was on fire. He was running people over left in right on only 8 touchs. 8 touches with over 8 yeards a carry...

Smart also said LSU made some defensive adjustments after that drive and managed to slow us down on the ground. I would argue we slowed ourselves down more than they did.

You are right because we had 3 passes in a row. Lsu didn’t stop the runs we didn’t attempt

I think he meant on the next possession...but whatever.

The one after was 2 three yard runs. Set Fromm up for success with 3rd and shorr

That is a good question - “Do you lose Pittman if you fire Chaney?”
I would have to know the answer to that question before I would ever agree to let Chaney go. You must NEVER lose Pittman under any circumstances.

You do not lose Pittman if you lose Chaney.

I imagine Coach Pittman could be persuaded to stay by Mr. Green.
