These are the 2025 snap counts for each player on 2026 roster (excluding a couple of walk ons with negligible snap counts). The data comes from a website called PuntAndRally.com. It's a very nice site if you haven't checked it out.
UGA offense totalled about 1000 total plays in 2025 and the defense totalled about 850 plays.

You can take Ameris Williams off your list

We're number 8 in the Bill Connelly returning experience thing after being 105th last year and still finishing #3 in the final CFP poll.
Barring injuries at quarterback or cornerback, I think this is shaping up to be a vintage Kirby Smart Georgia team.

Georgia's 2026 returning experience is more heavily influenced by roster retention (as opposed to portal) than most teams I've looked at. Teams are still learning which way to lean (if they have a choice): roster retention and development, or cull the roster and reload via the portal every year.

We only had 4 or 5 players from our 2-deep roster transfer out. That has to be top 10 nationally. Also didn't have as many players drafted as usual. Put these two things together and 2026 is looking incredibly promising.

It seems like retain and develop offers a lot more margin of error that relying primarily on the portal. If a team is counting on being able to find everything it needs every year, a few misses can be catastrophic. Retain and supplement via the portal can at least get a team to a "good enough is good enough" level.

I agree with what you're saying, but looking at the numbers some programs seem to be more aggressive about turning over roster. Texas is one that caught my eye this year. From what I can tell they lost about the same number to NFL/graduation that UGA did. In the portal, they lost about 10 more and added about a dozen more than we did. The result is that their 2026 roster played a total of 18,100 snaps in 2025, but 7334 (41%) of those come from portal pickups. Our 2026 roster played a total of 16.228 snaps in 2025, with 3438 (21%) of that coming from the portal.
Some of that turnover may have been intentional. Texas can definitely afford to play it that way if they choose. Whatever the reason, Texas' 2026 roster (returners and portal additions) played significantly more 2025 game snaps that UGA's roster, but UGA's 2026 returning players had significantly more 2025 game snaps (12.790) than Texas' returning players (10,766).
In the past, I would definitely have given more weight to Georgia's more homegrown roster, but Texas added a lot of game experience and the last couple of cfb seasons' outcomes make me hesistant to dismiss the logic of doing it that way if a program can afford it.

I guess the caveat would be total snaps vs snaps against championship caliber players? Also, I wouldn’t underestimate the value of being in the same system with the same teammates over a period of time.
I like Kirby’s approach, we’ll just have to see how it plays out.

I like Kirby's approach too. I like seeing the same players for more than one season. Teams with consistently high turnover will have to dumb down their schemes so all the new players can get up to speed in one offseason.

I think Kirby’s approach is the right one but the climate of CFB makes it extremely difficult to convince players to wait their turn and practice while they see examples of their peers transferring and getting playing time right away. It still amazes me how Indiana was able to do what they did. I think Cignetti must be a helluva coach giving the amount of turnover in the program. He’s very good at teaching his system and coaching his players up to win in any given situation.
I know I’m extremely biased but I think Kirby Smart and Cignetti are the top two coaches in CFB right now. Interesting that they’re going about it in two different ways, but I trust coach Smart to do the right thing. I’m just so grateful to have been here and to watch how he’s taken this program to the highest level. We should never take that man for granted!

Since players are constantly moving around, development is becoming a lost art. Everybody's scouring the portal for experienced players who already know the fundamentals and just need to get up to speed on scheme. Unfortunately, that makes UGA players a target because other coaches knows Kirby's guys are well coached.
The risk for UGA is that we can't (IMO) afford to pay top dollar for HS talent or portal talent/experience. But, I think Kirby will field competitive teams and that's enough to keep me interested. On the bright side, maybe it will weed out some of the perennial "Nattie or bust" UGA fans, but the rival trolls will probably persist.

Happy late Julys eve
For those that don’t know, months are thirded into thirds by ten days
The first ten is the early, the middle ten the mid, and the last 10 is late
And yet zero fever pitch for college football. Which is minutes away So sad
