In honor of PBR’s social post about eating a??..

Raise hand if you had a PBR and burger at Allen’s in Normaltown??

It was the last place in town serving PBR in a can when I was in school. Coworker at the bar I worked at introduced me to day drinking there.

Worked a few years at Lowery’s Tavern.

Had to quit or otherwise wouldn’t have graduated. Wouldn’t take it back for the world but unlimited alcohol, women, and pool tables made life balancing hard.

Coworker when I was 20 introduced my to day drinking at Allen’s and Sky’s before we opened in the evening.

Board is likely getting too young to remember Allen’s. Good burgers, cold PBR, and some random video games.

I never cared for PBR, but it was the cheapest pitcher beer at the Odyssey.

We moved from PBR as the nickel beer to Busch Lite. Forgot Odyssey was still serving it. Only way I cared for PBR was iced cold in a can.

Coworker also introduced me to the “yard” at Sky’s place.

Best burger in Athens! It was an Athens landmark in its day.

What was big Sky's last name that was in there all the time, may have owned it. I know he played at UGA. He passed a couple of decades ago.

Red Rockets (Budweiser in a bottle) was my beer of choice.

Sky = Craig Hertwig

Sky was because he was 6’8”

All American at one point. Played for Detroit for a bit. Brother, I think, played at USCe. Actually wanted to play basketball and Dooley kept him on football. Died heart issue 2012.

Opened Sky’s Place which was a bar behind a hotel (can’t remember which one) just down Broad St from Downtown. He also opened Nowhere Bar and Fifth Quarter. Was good friends with the Widespread Panic guys and Normal Town Flyers.

He was a bigger than life kinda guy. Good dude times I met him. Would always laugh when people couldn’t finish the Yard of beer. If you finished it without spilling could drink free as I recall…or maybe just the Yard was free.

I was in there when I was in grad school when Zier was a Freshman and saved him from being murdered by Sky. He brought up Sky’s sexuality loudly while drunk. He is lucky we were there. Plus I think Eric was 17 at the time. Sky was nice enough. He was a big dude no doubt. The bar was in the hotel behind the Courtyard Hotel off Finley. It was like a Red Roof Inn or something like that.

Sky’s sexuality was just kinda of a known thing and not something you really brought up.

Sky was a good dude regardless of his preferences. Ran in to Ryan Seacrest at Skys in the early 90s, had no idea who he was but the chicks did even back then.

Mostly saw him at No Where.

Would the Odyssey have had a backdoor that would take you into Uptown Lounges 90s location?

If so, yes.

Otherwise Odyssey predates my time. Drinking age had just changed and the bar scene in athens changed alot when i got there.

I left Athens and moved to Columbus, OH, lived near campus there and i only thought we drank alot.

Went to Allen's more than a few times. Don't particularly remember what I had there, but a burger and a PBR wouldn't be surprising.

On Sunday nights, O'Malley's had penny pitchers of....well, something that sorta looked like beer, at least. Scary stuff.

I ate arse at Allen’s. One off my girlfriends in college was a bartender there. We would occasionally shut the bar down.

Yes. Sky owned that building across from Georgia theatre.
