We couldn’t handle the surge they got hit with. We have already had 2 people die in the hospital from it here and it’s starting to get people anxious.

The biggest issue is the resources. You overwhelm the system and then it’s not just who does and doesn’t get Covid that becomes an issue. There’s still a constant supply of trauma, strokes, acute critically ill patients, etc vying for the same resources.

They are out of beds, Rig. They have too many in them already and too many new patients from CV-19 coming in. It is a MATH problem. I know you’re like me....a word guy. But this is very simple math. The difference in the administration of healthcare has little-to-nothing to do with bed and patient count. You honestly think we won’t get to a point where we’re deciding who gets a bed based on age? Nurses posting on the OT thread are already seeing it getting close. Don’t be so foolhardy.

Its what gave them the head start. They came back from China for the holiday and then went to their factories and spread it from there. It was a 1/2 punch of a lot of infected coming back and then working closely together. Which I assume why essentially the rest of the world became alarmed and started taking extreme measures.

Off the soapbox, but does anyone know the status of testing in the state as of now? What New York is doing is ideal. We need drive-thru setups that keep sick people out of the ER. What’s going on with us right now?

This shite can hit us just as hard if we don’t take measures to slow it down. You start having people flooding ICUs that are already operating near capacity, and we could all get screwed

Not really and Italy has higher rates of death from influenza and more cases than other countries in Europe at least from 2013 to 2017 LINK

quote:

In the winter seasons from 2013/14 to 2016/17, an estimated average of 5,290,000 ILI cases occurred in Italy, corresponding to an incidence of 9%.

More than 68,000 deaths attributable to flu epidemics were estimated in the study period.

Italy showed a higher influenza attributable excess mortality compared to other European countries. especially in the elderly.
recent years, Italy has been registering peaks in death rates, particularly among the elderly during the winter season.
quote:

mortality rate of 10.7 per 1,000 inhabitants was observed in the winter season 2014/2015 (more than 375,000 deaths in absolute terms), corresponding to an estimated 54,000 excess deaths (+9.1%) as compared to 2014 (Signorelli and Odone, 2016), representing the highest reported mortality rate since the Second World War in Italy

Sorry,Italy is one of the last 1st world places I want to be if I'm old and sick and it's Winter.

Today in GA...

Waffle house cook (not waitress as I originally reported) has been released from state quarantine.

He is talking to media.

Says he is diabetic and went to hospital for pneumonia.

Full story and interview on WSBTV website.

We're up to 99 cases with an update due at noon.

56% are men. ETA- sauces conflicting, another source says 53% female.

So why do elderly people have higher mortality rates and higher rates of death there from influenza than other countries in Europe?

See above post for links and stats.

He's just repeating what he has been told and programmed to say, you aren't gonna change his mind.

You’re not going to tell me about H1N1 being worse next, are you? Because if you look at the history of cases for that and how they escalated, comparing where it was in the first 90 or so days to where this is......this is worse.

Any eta? We’re going to see our number likely double today and there are far many more out there that haven’t been identified. The sooner we have more capacity and it’s easier for people to access, the better.

Thanks, Rig. I’m not trying to give you a hard time. I’m concerned about my in-laws and the fact they are only taking this half-seriously. My FIL is about to be 70, has heart issues and is on an ACE inhibitor. He’s a prime candidate to die from this. And what he also isn’t getting is that if they get sick and hand it off to my wife, their practice will have to shut down for two weeks, at minimum, which opens a whole other level of issues for us.

I'm having a hard time appreciating the black humor involved in watching a total moron lie himself out of a public health crisis. Too many of my dear friends and relatives are threatened.
