Edit: On 2nd watch i take it back, its an amazing episode the way it is

Exactly.

Just got done re-watching it too. And it's an even bigger masterpiece than I first thought

I thought the dothrakis charging with their swords on fire as flaming catapult balls fly overhead was the most badass thing ever, but now I think that scene where Tyrion and Sansa are hiding behind a tomb might be even moreso

Tyrion holds her hand...and what is said gets said.....but then if you're listening there's this little plink of a couple piano notes...…...perfectly bleak notes......and slowly more bleak notes are added as shite is shown at Winterfell to be as bleak as bleak can get..... and its in slow motion on different fronts.....and the plink notes build and bleak strings are added.... and its a fricking epic bleak orchestra playing the most gut-wrenching symphony imaginable that builds up to the facemelter Arya ending.

Masterpiece.

(Just imagine how spoiled a culture has to be let down or to scoff at that shite. Unreal)

the score of the whole episode was perfect. but like you said, that specific piano in that spot was so powerful.

Completely agree. If you go over to the movie/tv board, most of the posters are screaming at the sky over it because not enough people died and Jon didn't kill the Night King.

Have an up vote for any thread about pickin!

While the 50's to the 70's saw a resurgence of serious pickin lots of old time pickers were lost to time before recordings were made in the old hills of my youth. I remember as a kid hearing not only some mighty fine picker's but many who played older instruments like the dulcimer (especially those who had made their own)

I remember as a young man having Johnny Niles to Sunday lunch and hearing the old music he was the first to bring out of the hills in the time between WWI and WWII. He would tell stories of being left for dead in the no man's land of the first World War While he did not originate bluegrass, he brought it to the masses and led the the way for the haunting vocals later hear in Ralph's music. O Death

Banjo

Fiddles

Mandolin

Dobro

Theres definitely some looney fans over there, but i thought somewhat similarly on first take

Not that "enough" people didnt die, entire armies were destroyed. But more to the improbability of who didnt die. Which may speak more to it being in the dna of the show to rip beloved characters away in moments like that. I fully expected to lose some combination of Sam, Sansa, Tyrion, Varys, Hound, Jamie, Gray Worm, etc

Besides that i had no problem with who actually killed the night king. I did at first hope for more of a showdown between him and Jon. Just because it was such a huge storyline between them for several seasons

But who knows what happens in these last few episodes

John vs the Night King in a Luke/Vader light-saber showdown would have literally been the most predictable ending possible under the sun. They even teased it repeatedly at the end.

And likewise, a bunch of main characters getting offed in the blur of the high-speed walking dead invasion would have been equally as predictable.

In other words, spoiled ingrates bitching about any of this are literally bitching because they didn't think the battle was predictable enough. They're mad because it wasn't predictable. Ha ha ha. F'n retarrds.

Regardless, the glass is only half full and there's still a long way to go.

And the next conflict sets up much better for some facemelter collision course showdowns. Where characters can earn a quality demise, instead of in the blur of a 100mph invasion. Which is much more suited for b-list deaths. Although I wonder if someone was wounded, possibly mortally, that we forgot about and/or didn't realize.

Collision course. It's on, baby

That brings up something I noticed while rewatching…..

After eye-patch fire-sword dude died protecting Arya (and the Hound), the red witch said something interesting. SHe said that Eye-Patch had finally served the purpose for which he kept being brought back from the dead for.

Which at the time didn't mean much, but now we know it meant that he was brought back to sacrifice himself in order to save the one who would slay the Night King.

Arya.

So....on the theme of predetermination…...was Arya's symmetrically pre-determined purpose just fulfilled? And is her role now complete?

I think that it is. It has to be.

For one, she got the rock-star role of the entire series taking down night king. And so, if she keeps kicking arse, Game of Thrones becomes the Arya super-tom-boy show, which it won't.

Therefore, Arya is as good as dead. And I believe it will have something to do with a mountain hound collision course melter. ONward

The only gripe I can understand is that the whole book series and TV show was building towards Jon being the "prince that was promised", this savior of the masses that will defeat the Others and prevent the darkness of the long night. He's got this secret lineage of two of the post most powerful families, both having strong "magical" powers, he's been brought back to life by the Lord of Light, he weilds a magical valyrian sword.

And then Ayra just comes out of nowhere and does what he was supposed to. I think most of the complainers are just mad that their theories and predictions ended up being wrong, but at the same time I wonder if Martin will follow the show's lead in the final book, or if he will stay on the path of Jon being the savior.

I think you're right on it in regards to ayra. Her demise might be the spark for the two brothers to battle.

It was definitely a little hokie too, but I let it roll off my back.

I think the tv people were just trying to live up to the expectation of providing the unexpected and having facemelter twists. But everyone has always known Night King would never win. So to me, i don’t really care who gets the MVP.

It does make Jon Snow look a little cucked though. I agree with that.

I still think someone got mortally wounded in the battle that we dont know about. And that this will be part of how tonight’s episode gets under way... as this person bleeds out in someone’s arms. Maybe with a few last words.

I just don’t see how after it got as bleak as bleak can get that now they all just give each other high 5s. “We did it! Woo! Let’s go get Sersi now!”

I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t have enjoyed seeing him win. It wouldn’t have even surprised me from an RR Martin standpoint.

It’s just odd to me that a lot more ‘mistakes’ are allowed by characters now. Making a wrong move early on in the series (back when they followed the books) basically always meant doom. It seems to be one of Martins key points. They’ve softened with that big time which is ok, just kind of odd as the stakes get even higher.

It’s because there isn’t source material to go on anymore. Part of Martin’s genius is his ability to subvert tropes and expectations. It’s what makes the ruthless parts of his books so powerful.

Ever since they ran out of book material, the show, while still the best thing on television, has diverged more and more into typical high fantasy.
