Classic Center Arena seems like a gross waste of money for a city like Athens.

Hotel and Old Folks Home both good.

Not really related, but Georgia Basketball in the spot where the classic center is would be amazing.

Obviously Stegeman has been renovated and this isn’t happening any time soon, but UGA basketball downtown would be awesome.

Yea, there's only so much that can be done
with Stegman.

I'd love to see more details about the arena. We gotta get out of Stegman sooner or later.

We have spent too much money on steg to leave now.

20 years ago, moving to a downtown arena would have made a ton of sense

We're spending $80 million on our new FB facility and we spent $8 million on Stegman recently...it's pretty much peanuts these days.

Auburn spent $80+ million on their facility and we're much more solvent than those clowns.Hell, even Ole Miss has a state of the art facility.

How many more retirement communities do we need around here.
We already have Georgia Club which is basically an "active" adult community.
They are currently in process of building a very large retirement community off of Macon Hwy by Athens Academy, they just approved another large on by Epps Bridge and now this one?

Seems like an absurd amount of "Retirement" communities in the area.

I heard a rumor (again a rumor and probably nonsense) that UGA was considering demolishing that dumpy Georgia Square mall and build a new arena there. Leaving the Steg for Volleyball and Gym Dogs. Seems a bit far from campus but it already has all the parking and space.

Hope that’s just a rumor. A basketball arena that far out from campus would probably be pretty soulless and lame. If they ever went away from Stegeman it should be downtown.

Athens is a great place to retire and retirement communities are springing up everywhere. Its a huge business with the boomers aging.

That whole area by the river was blighted for decades and the hipsters never invested a dime to turn it into art warehouses and lofts and breweries (like Asheville and Greenville did for their riverfront) so now developers are turning it into profitable things. The good-old-dayers missed the boat.

Wait wait wait.... the article is unclear.... are splost funds being asked for to build the retirement condos? If so, frick that.

In fact, nothing new should be funded with splost until the hundred other things are paid off... splost has paid off almost zero of the projects it has "funded" over 20 years in Athens... millions in muni bonds with interest have been taken out to actually fund the majority of the bullshite.

Yeah the Mall may get torn down but only for a mixed use development (if that).

The reason UGA can’t and won’t do what Auburn and Ole Miss have done for basketball are 1. We don’t have the space they have on campus to build and 2. Donors aren’t going to back that kind of play until we get a title in football. That’s the only goal that matters to people with money and I’m not going to disagree.

Stegeman was a dump when I arrived as a freshman back in 1973.

If you have not been in Steve in a while, it is as nice as it can be for it's structure.

I don't think it is the problem and tearing down one 11k seat arena to build another is not really progress. The players spend all their time in the practice facility which is too knotch.

They just need the right coach, should have gotten Pearl, he was a sure thing.
