I got the chance to try and catch punts from an old HS coach who was trying to get onto the Falcons as a punter. He could boom it and yes….that’s ALOT harder than it looks. And that’s without guys running downfield trying to take your head off.

who said that? We simply referenced some dudes that were known to fair catch a good bit. Never said anything about the difficulty of the task.

I was just being sarcastic. Gray fair caught some punts when he had clear room to run them for yards.

Thats a stretch.

I understand and agree to the sentiment that it is harder than it looks.
But not harder for players with ball skills.

Trying to teach someone without ball skills to catch a punt is painful. But so is trying to teach a slow kid to play cornerback. Or to teach a pansie to play on the OL. Or to teach an idiot proper blocking assignments.
There are many things harder than fair catch.

Why do you think they had him primarily only catching them inside the 20?

It has always appeared to me that his contributions and skills in that facet were diminished and mocked, which is why I said that.

You make the assumption that you knew our playcall and strategy. Coaches don’t always give them the green light to return. You put the hands guy in and call a safe call on the return.

Correct. We stop light returns when playing for a fake or playing to rush the punter. Especially back in the richt days.

Natural ball skills (which didnt translate to getting upfield for 8 yards).

That is more hindsight.
In real time, i figured it was decisionmaking (when to let it go through the end zone, when to catch, and when to run like mad and get there to catch to make sure it didnt touch the ground and roll)
