25-30 yards Mike make all of the difference between a 3 and out and extending drives oh, and keeping the clock moving to seal a win.

I honestly think he’ll average more than that, though.

We gotta remember, he actually rushed for over 700 yards, but he lost around 140 yards from 22 sacks, resulting in a net 574.

So he was really running for over 60 yards a game at Wake, but losing ~12 yards a game on sacks.

So really he was probably converting 4-6 extra 1st downs a game with just his feet.

We didn’t have that at all. We were lucky if Fromm got 1 rushing 1st down every other game, I’d guess.

Too many times Fromm could have converted with a little more effort before going down or out-of-bounds. I think I remember Kirby getting on Jake for that one time freshman year.

This is a newish video Brooks Austin made on Newman. It especially highlights his running ability as he focuses on the Duke game where Newman rushes 29x for 140 yards and also threw for around 260’ish. Note that this game happened in a monsoon and he still put up these numbers.

The video really hits on how agile and quick this guy is too. He’s got tons of wiggle on top of power, while also having the wisdom of knowing when to protect the ball and his body rather than seeking contact and being dumb in that regards.

When defenses stack up to defend the run ... keeping it isn’t the answer. Being able to read the defense and then hit a slant or check down to the RB or TE is what we need.

When the back side DE is crashing down on EVERY running play because your QB is not a remote threat to keep it, keeping it *is* in fact an answer to at least force defenses to play you honest.

If you've watched Newman's clips, he *is* a downfield threat so long as our receivers are not a liability. If I've got any major concerns, it's going to be on how well he is able to handle different level of defensive play in the SEC from 95% of the ACC and down competition he's used to. Miami poster on another board seems to think he crumbles against heavy zone coverage, but not sure I buy that just yet, as he was basing it on the last 4/5 games, which were with his top receiving threats missing. Of course, we could all find out that it IS a problem, in which case I trust the staff to start one of the youngsters if needed.

It's kinda silly that NCAA still hasn't adjusted to the NFL method of taking sack yards out of passing...

But that's a great point for sure. That avgs out to ~53 for 13 games fwiw, but the point is valid. I do think I've seen a few places where he's said he wants to run less *often* but I'd anticipate being able to average 40+ yards a game still with our OL and skill position improvements? Receiver being the question mark. Can more than one guy step up and be the downfield threat that we need.

No I get it...I just think the mobile QB I overblown in these discussions because us and the other SEC teams face mobile QBs all the time and defend them quite well. The fact he can run is great and a definite benefit. BUT, the two QBs I’m going to watch tomorrow night are going to beat you with their arms and QB IQ before they beat you with their legs.
