I don't care what your parents say. With HOPE, you're paying very little to attend UGA. 30K a year on top of a scholarship is nuts. And despite what you think, you could lose that scholarship down the line.
You don't plan on partying, etc - if you are the tiniest bit social - you will party. And why not? I went downtown in a bacon costume because I could. Do the work and have fun too. You have the rest of your life to be serious all the time. Everyone I speak to tells me to live it up. I've got one more semester and I promise you - I am.

quote:Oh I'm well aware that I'll probably switch my major a time or two, and UGA does have a wider variety to choose from, so that's a plus. I'm going in pretty much undecided, leaning toward something in medicine, but I'm very open to any other field that might interest me more.
Also, while your aspirations are extremely admirable, you may start into pre-med courses, and decide it isn't for you. If that's the case, you're better off at UGA where you have more options if you want to switch

Major or minor in biology and get good grades wherever you go.

This shouldn't even be a question. If you're a big enough Georgia fan to be on the interwebs talking about the sports program, you will rue the day sitting in some crappy apartment in Macon when there is a great home game to use as a study break in Athens.

If you're thinking medicine etc then I wouldn't hesitate to goto UGA. Not talking bad about mercer at all (it's a good school too) but it's not looked at as "better" than UGA in that regard in any possible way. I didn't even have anywhere bring up undergrad on residency interviews unless it was just to talk SEC football anyways. Just bust your arse at UGA, if you still want to do medicine then great, you'll have a really good foundation for it. But if not, as others have said here you'll also have an endless amount of other opportunities to explore there as well.

OP I'm a current Pre-Med student at UGA and was also considering Mercer (not really but it was the first school I got into out of high school). Mercer does have a very good reputation for medical related majors but I assure you that UGA is known for having top notch science programs and have some of the best research scientists in the nation on their campus. If your concern is which program will give you a better chance of getting into a medical school, it's a wash. Believe it or not, med schools (at least in GA) do not look at which undergrad institution you attend as a deciding factor (unless you attend an Ivy). They will acknowledge your institution and how well you did there. UGA is known for preparing students very well for medical and professional schools so I don't think you are losing anything if you come to UGA. UGA also has so many connections to hospitals for shadowing and gaining experience that it's a good place in terms of student resources as well. Bottom line: UGA offers 1000x the college experience that Mercer does. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders so I'm sure you could balance the rigorous pre-med workload and having fun. Sorry this was a little long but let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps.
