Agreed - he was no world beater, but he got it done. As far as luck goes, there are two reasons that one team beats another: (1) they were better; (2) they were luckier. That was the one requirement above all else that Napoleon had for his generals: they had to be lucky. If Fortuna favors you, you're very tough to stop. Highly competent but snakebit isn't often a winning combo.
