Nice. Still two things in favore for Greeny. He was a redshirt freshmen and he had Mark Richt as an OC and qb coach.

And considering Georgia won the SECC the following season and beat FSU in the Sugar Bowl, I think it's reasonable to conclude that Greene had a stronger supporting cast relative to the competition than does Eason. Of course we will have to see what next season brings.

And just think how much closer the stats would be if we didnt drop 6 balls a game.....

Why not add Murray and Stafford into the mix?

Maybe because their first year starting wasn't also under a first year head coach.
Edit - and new to them OC.

Eason had a pretty dang good freshman season all things considered. He needs to work hard this offseason and improve his accuracy and pocket awareness but I think he shows huge potential. I fail to see why others on this board think he is below average for where he should be.

hey look Cobb knows more about our former greats than the people who put together the UGA vids in the stadium apparently.

It's baffling, to be honest.
His numbers are already lightyears ahead of where Stafford was and he's clearly shown some big fricking balls at times (Mizzou, Tennessee, Kentucky). I think we're pretty set at QB.

And those same bad receivers cause at least 3 or 4 of those interceptions. Imagine Easons stats this year if he had his very own AJ.

That will come if his technique improves. On the throws where he steps into his throw, he was generally pretty good on the deep balls; it was when he was throwing of his back foot or not squared up when he missed. The pocket presence and awareness will come with time and experience. We really need him to grasp the offense and playbook, as well as defensive schemes, so that he can get us out of bad plays at the line without looking to the sideline.

This. The OP was more from me thinking about how good/bad Chaney is in developing QBs than Eason's stats. Also, don't remember how many dropped balls Greene had but we all know how many Eason's had. I do remember that Randy McMichael could catch some. No McMichael, no hobnail boot.

I've been impressed with Eason all season. He has played with a lot of maturity and poise for a true Freshman. Once he gets his mechanics fixed and gets receivers that don't have bricks for hands, he'll be a beast.

You are right that 3-4 of his interceptions came from deflected passes, but I'm not sure i would put all of them on his receivers. Their job is to catch the ball. Most of them made an effort to catch a ball that was poorly thrown or thrown behind the receiver and it deflected off their hands to a defender. The receivers deserve some criticism early in the season for dropped balls, but that seemed to straighten out towards the middle to end of season. Before someone says it...yest, we had some dropped balls after that time, but that is going to happen to every team/receiver. There just seemed to be fewer.

Wow. Good catch. I didn't remember how much McMichael had done on that drive.

Verron Haynes, unless McMichael made a catch to get them down the field. I now have to go watch the drive.
Edit: watched it, good times

Didn't Greene have Ben Watson, Terrance Edwards & Reggie Davis catching the ball for him? Seems like that was around the time we had George Foster and some other good o-linemen too. I may have my years convoluted some but I'm still willing to bet Greene had a better supporting cast.

DG undoubtedly had a better OL.
TE is a wash...it was McMichael until 02 when Watson took over so I'm not sure which year in particular you're referencing, but Nauta alreayd seems to be as good of a pass catcher. DG definitely had better WRs without a doubt, although I believe Reggie [Brown] was injured in 01 and didn't play. RBs the nod goes to Eason IMO.

To be fair, you do have to compare the supporting cas when looking at two QBs. Eason is still a work in progress. I always thought Greene was a great college QB. He never really made much of a name for himself in the NFL which is probably due to his arm streangth. Accuracy-wise, he was rock solid in college.
