David Greene vs Stetson Bennett

I was thinking about this yesterday and it made me curious. Greene is universally loved and considered one of the best QBs we've ever had. Bennett is a really good QB that won a title but 20 years from now it FEELS like he probably won't get that same universal praise as DG. I think there's a few reasons for that. The biggest is that Greene broke the ceiling in a lot of ways for UGA. We hadn't won in knoxville in 20 years. We had never won the east, and hadn't won the SEC in 20 years. Hadn't been to a sugar bowl in 20 years. Weren't used to beating Tennessee, tech, and AU with such frequency, etc. So it makes sense that he would be adored as he is. When thinking about stetson one of the main talking points against him is "well he won because of the defense he didn't really have to take over and win games" but I mean Greene primarily won because of BVG's defense too. And greene was certainly not known for his athletcism or high recruiting ranking. So I went back and looked at each player's stats in the 2 years prior to their senior season.
David Greene
2002- 218/379, 58% completions. 2924 yards (209 YPG played in). 22 TD / 8 INT. 137 rating
2003- 264/438, 60% completions. 3307 yards (236 YPG played in). 13 TD / 11 INT. 129 rating
Stetson Bennett
2020- 86/155, 56% completions. 1179 yards (147 YPG played in). 8 TD / 6 INT. 129 rating
2021- 185/287, 65% completions. 2862 yards (204 YPG played in). 29 TD / 7 IN. 177 rating
Greene was firmly entrenched as the starter in 2002 while Bennett in 2020 did not start the season and was thrust into action and was then hurt midway thought. Obviously this was also the weird covid year with a shortened season and no cupcake games. Grenee's junior year was decent on yardage but lousy on TD/INT. His rating that year was actually identical to Bennett's in 2020. Bennett's season last year was by far the best of all 4 seasons compared.
It will be interesting to see how stetson does this year which I think will go a long way in cementing his legacy. Greene's final season he actually threw the fewest yards of his career, but had 20 TD/4 INT and put up the highest rating of his career. If Bennett shows continued improvement and puts up another good year, I tjhink you're going to have to start adding his name up there with some of the best we've had.

If Bennett gets us to the SECCG and into the Playoff (it will take a win in the SECCG) he will be in the top 3 UGA QBs ever.

Interesting. I didn't remember Greene having so many INTs in 2003.
It's amazing how much we allow other people's narrative and perceptions influence our opinions.
I do agree that people in a few years will probably think of Bennett in the same way we think of Buck Belue, which isn't really fair.

Bennett has a light years better arm and is far more mobile. Both make good decision with ball and limit turnovers.
Bennett is the better qb.
Bennett is the better qb.

The other thing playing against Stetson’s perception is the escalation of quarterback play and the passing game.
Greene would have ranked much higher in the list of other QB’s playing in the country at that time than Stetson does in today’s era of quarterbacks.
That means even if Stetson is better than Greene in a vacuum (which I think he is btw) it’s not the same thing when the game is being played very differently.

Richt passed to set up the run, we were largely a passing team under Richt combined with stellar tailback talent that did their best inspite of 3 star olines.

Football was different and Greenie was a different QB. If our defense wasn't so good, Bennett would have had more yards and more TDs, but also, more turnovers.
Both QBs played on balanced offenses that utilized good running with play action.
For the time and place, Greenie was a great QB for our program. On the other hand, some people just knew Bennett would keep us from winning a big game and when he won a bunch of big games, some of the more intelligent people were happy they were wrong, while the lower IQ folks had to double down. They are going to make this next season awful.

I hope you don't place yourself in this group. But congrats on keeping up the schtick 6 months later

Well said Peter, agree. Greene reminded me of Chad Pennington while Bennett is sort of Doug Flute/Drew Brees.

Oh, I won’t have to keep anything up. The cockroaches will show back up the first time the 2022 dawgs see the first drip of adversity.

David Greene had a fantastic defense behind him a lot like Stetson did this year. I think Greene just played in some legendary games so his lore is pretty high but outside of his ability to sale a playaction he was pretty unremarkable. With that said, he was a steady guy that got the job done. Keep in mind, there was no one like Brock Bowers out their shagging passes for Greene either although his receivers weren’t bad. With that said, I think Stetson gets the nod for shouldering a title. IMO

He had Fred Gibson to throw to, Fred was pretty damn good as a freshman as well. I believe Ben Watson was in there as well.

He had Terrence Edwards and Reggie Brown in that receiving core also. Didn’t Edwards have an 1000 yard season with Greene?

Pope, Martrez Milner, and Ben Watson. All played in NFL

Fred was tall and just really good on the 9 route. When he was a freshman, I assumed he was a 1st round pick. Didn’t develop as much as I thought he would.

Reggie Brown was on that team. Good call. Just went back and looked. Didn’t realize Damien Gary had so many catches or yards.

That dude was so good in 02’

it's been mentioned but I gotta majorly disagree there. Greene's receivers in the 2 years mentioned are FAR better than the receivers stetson has had the last 2 years.
Terrence Edwards, Fred Gibson, Reggie Brown, Damien Gary, Michael Johnson, Bryan mcclenson, sean bailey, Ben watson
vs
jermaine burton, kearis jackson, demetris robertson, ladd mconckey, AD mitchell, brock bowers. 1 healthy year of pickens

Yeah im taking this group and not even thinking twice. Bowers alone makes this group insane combined with Ad Mitchell, Ladd and Burton. That's not even including guys like Darnell Washington. Not saying Fred Gibson, Terrence Edwards and Reggie etc weren't good players. Heck, Reggie was a 2nd rounder - A reach for sure but he had talent and I love Terrance Edwards to the core but I just don't think it's a real comparison. It's crazy that Terrance Edwards never got a real shot in the league with his ability to get open and shag passes. He put over 1k yards several times in the CFL.
The athletes on this team are just insane imo even without Burton/Pickens. The tight ends on this team are better than most teams best wide receivers.
