Is anybody here a project manager, superintendent, or assistant of either?

I own a plumbing/remediation company... didn't go to school for it though. I got a defeee in something similar. Experience is the true degree.

If you only have book-learnin' then you'll lose the job search to a cute girl with the same book learnin' every time.

If you have some experience you can apply to your book learnin', you can do well.

But anything in construction is feast or famine.

Right now is feast.

Economy is cyclical.

There will be a famine.

That's some broad general advice. I could give you more specific advice if you had a more specific question.

In my opinion, the last skilled trade left that isn't being completely taken over by Mexicans is telecom and electrical.

With even 2 years of applied construction experience as an apprentice or helper in either of those trades, while getting a construction mgmt degree of some sort, you could do well.

But as a telco tradesmen, you would decide construction sucks and you want to get into networking, then you find yourself changing your major to networking.

Then you find out all the network admins have been outsourced to India, so you go back to school to get some security certificates for IT security, cuz that's where the money is, but by the time you finish that, IT security has also been outsourced to India and AI, and so on and so forth.

What do you do now? What is your age?

I live in a rural county - 20k people - and there is not ONE plumber here right now, not one, only a guy who moonlights after work. The point I’m making is there’s a killing to be made in skilled work. I tried to get my son to pursue a trade after school because he’s good at fixin’ stuff. He chose teaching/football coaching instead. Oh well.

InfoSec/IT Security is still a viable career path, but you do have to be selective about what organizations you look to work for... some organizations value it more than others... the ones that don't end up looking like Equifax at some point.

To rig's point, it's usually best to work backward from the job that you feel good about the long term prospects on if you're "re-inventing" yourself, or just starting out. Does it align with things that you excel at? Are the job conditions amenable to you? Get a good gauge as to what that looks like today as well as what it will look like for the next 10+ years (tough to plan farther than that... you'll shift gears along the way anyways). 5-10 year outlook on the job should at least confirm you're not going down a complete dead end in most cases.

I am an electrical project manager for a company just outside of Atlanta. I went through the IBEW’s apprentice program which is 5 years. Good thing about this prorgan you get the book training and on the job training at the same time as you only atttend class for 8 hours every other week

There is a high demand for electricians right now in the area. We have been trying to get qualified electricians for over a year and most of them can’t pass a background check or drug test
