Champ running that tunnel screen as a Dawg was pretty awesome. If he hit the hole in stride, that was it.

Sounds like Leonard Pope. I'd gladly take a second coming of Pope on this team.

4.3 is Champ Bailey Speed. Willie Gault and Bo Jackson the only guys we played against that would be faster than that

Percy Harvin, Darren McFadden, and Trindon Holliday were all in that range. Marquise Brown (Oklahoma, Ravens) didn't run at the combine but I believe he would be in that range as well.

Watching Hardman tear it up in the NFL this year makes me wonder what kind of corner he would have become.

Hardman could not have landed in a better spot. KC drafted him as a replacement for Tyreek Hill in the event that Hill faced a long suspension but Hill didn't get suspended. Regardless, KC and Mahomes can use his deep speed better than anyone else in the NFL.

I thought Percy Harvin was a 4.5 guy.

Harvin ran a 4.41. He always seemed to play faster than that though. Some guys run better in pads than others do. Tyreek Hill, for example, ran a 4.29 at the combine. That's otherworldly fast, but not the record. He's the fastest player I've ever seen in pads though.

Agreed.Deion is the closest I've to seen but it's still a distinct difference.

Seeing him at UGA woulda been interesting but I think we backed way off of em in HS and did the same when he came outta JC.

Those are 4.3- 4.4 guys

Gault and Jackson were 4.2 guys.

Fastest college player I've ever seen in person was Dri Archer from Kent State. Dude was a blur and ended up running a 4.26 40.

Keith Marshall ran a 4.3 at the NFL combine at 220 pounds. Bad knees ruined him.

Okay so Usain Bolt was clocked @ 4.22 so I think some of these 4.2 and 4.3 stories might be a stretch.

Back in the old days, you were timed at 100 yards. Then, people discovered that football speed was different than track speed in a sense. Guys who can accelerate to top speed faster have an advantage, so they started doing 40s. I think the 40 is a good measure of football speed. Seems like I heard that NFL teams were looking at 20 yard dashes to better gage acceleration. In fact, I’m sure the science at that level is even more precisely measured.

Guys like Emmitt Smith, who were 4.5 plus runners got to 5th gear in a few steps and could change direction, start, stop, and accelerate amazingly fast.

Bolt is one of those dudes who keeps accelerating past 40.
