Well, day 1 looks to be in pretty good shape. Davis, Rochester, Wyatt, Walker.

Need another big haul in 2020 and we'll be right where we want to be numbers-wise. Don't forget Logue and Walthour either. Nobody would've figured Davis to be the force he was when they looked at the '18 class.

I’ve not watched our film and Kirby and then found solid players but we need dominators to truly beat Bama.

I have not watched all of these guys film but we really need to improve in this area.

From a poster on another board that tends to have good intel:

quote:

We aren’t really trying to hold onto him. He wants to play QB and baseball and it sounds like our coaches are ok with him doing that elsewhere if he’s so inclined. OM is recruiting him as an athlete, not specifically a QB.

He may flip and then we either use that spot for best player available or a different QB.

I’m saying, I wish we could get another high caliber DT that could contribute from day 1. Maybe these lower ranked guys will be that but it’s less likely just based on rankings.

So look at the top DL rankings and tell me who else we can conceivably add? There is not an abundance of highly rated DL to begin with... Then couple that with most of them already being locked up and that's how you get one elite pickup with several high upside guys. Look at Bama's DL over the years. Typically similar. 1-2 elite DL and then filling in with high upside evals that may or may not pay off.

We aren't going to magically have the best DL in college football. Going to have to prove that we can develop the position to get the attention of top DL recruits.

There were a few people here the other day that apparently know how to deal with server issues well. They seemed like they would be more than happy to help.

I agree with that whole heartedly. I’m just pointing out that our biggest weakness remains at that position and in order for us to effectively shut down Bama’s run game, we need better personnel there.

Are we making strides, absolutely. But just going off of the judgment of the so called gurus, we will add one guy that will have an immediate impact.

2 years from know Jordan Davis and Walthour develop into beasts and we are recruiting better at this position and not even the Stl Rams run the ball on us.

DL is our biggest need. I’ve been saying for two years now. We need quality over quantity and we are getting that with Trayvon Walker. We aren’t getting the quality we want so we are taking guys that will develop over time so our DL continues to be a work in progress. I’m saying, I wish we could get another high caliber DT that could contribute from day 1. Maybe these lower ranked guys will be that but it’s less likely just based on rankings.

Julian Rochester was ranked #70 nationally
Michail Carter was ranked #120 nationally
Michael Barnett was ranked #235 nationally
Tyler Clark was ranked #246 nationally
Jordan Davis was ranked #425 nationally

I’d argue Clark and Davis are 2 of our best DL. While I love stars, it’s hard to predict the OL and DL coming out of HS

Seeing it being whispered that Sanders is on board as of tonight, let the staff know. Multiple sources, but only one that I actually know and somewhat trust. FWIW.

I'm no insider, just repeating what I've read.

Take 2 RBs or 3 if Herrien transfers and Holyfield goes pro

Was flipping through the Alabama board just now. The Gumps are highly confident they get Dean and fairly confident they Sanders.

I am as skeptical and pessimistic about our roster as they come, but in so sick of the DL conversation.

People act like we haven’t signed a competent player there in ten years...

Also, DL was not our weakest position group this year. Not at all. Davis and Wyatt had outstanding years for first year guys.

I’m just not sure what people expect, because there simply aren’t a bunch of 5 star DT prospects. Everyone has to skrimp for them and utilize jucos etc.

Davis was clearly way underrated. Wyatt should be a stud next year and then the guys we have coming in, we should just fine.

Exactly... There are a total of 8 5* rated DL in the 2019 class... and 5 of those 8 are at DE (some of which are actually OLB - see: Smith, Nolan). So we have 1 of the three 5* DTs and we have the top of the 5* "DE" rated players... who will play OLB for us. We've fought as hard as we can/should for Chris Hinton but he just doesn't seem to have any desire to go anywhere other than B1G country (where his family is from). Bill Norton is top 20ish at his position, and Zion Logue is seen as a very underrated prospect (so much so that people were thinking if any of the DL got cut from the class it would have been Norton not Logue).

Tray Scott was fairly questioned going into this year due to not having big name DL hits last year, but right on cue he showed 1) evaluation skills were solid in guys like Davis and Wyatt, and 2) his recruiting chops are solid enough to land a top 25 overall player in Walker, and round out the class with 2 more solid additions. Just don't know what else he/we can do to quiet this nonsense.

Our deficiency this year on defense was exactly what we expected. Roquan was difficult to replace and the 2 CB spots not manned by Deandre Baker were targeted often and it was difficult to hold up there. Coming into 2019, we likely see improved ILB play but now have a huge hole where Deandre Baker leaves. Tyson Campbell and Divaad Wilson need to have killer off-seasons, and someone needs to step up and claim the Nickel slot (Webb?).

I'll be a lot more worried about the DT slot in 2020 (unless Tyler Clark were to make the strange move of bouncing this year, which is not expected).

True. Consider where Trent was ranked nationally. He was decent, but not the earth shaker we thought.
