You might be right, but Kirby seems to be of a mind to have such depth that we will play one guy the first down or two, and then bringing a smaller/lighter guy on third down. Seems to like rotating players so much that nobody needs to play every down. I don't think Kirby necessarily wants players that can play every down. Very few offenses do not substitute for long periods of times.. 2-3 plays tops, then they bring in fresh players. We are in an era of specialized players, and I think it will continue.

I'm sure Kirby would love to do that, but it's very hard to do that if the other team isn't huddling, logistically. That's especially true if the guy running off the field is a tired 370 lb dude.

They aren't huddling, but they are substituting. And as long as they are substituting, they have to let us substitute, with no penalty. That's why I think it is a non-issue.

However, recruiting was completely different when I was playing and I really didn't keep up with it.....and the game has changed since i played, so you guys know more about the nuances......I'll defer to your knowledge over mine.

wow i disagree with the entire premise of a huge space eating Nose tackle doesn't equate to amazing defense anymore---Cody was only 7 years ago ffs (not 1995) and he won a natty. It can absolutely still work.

I tend to agree with you. Dexter Lawrence is 6'5" and 340LBS at Clemson, and we would have gladly taken him.
Aubrey Solomon at Michigan is 6'3" and 288LBS.

Maybe I am wrong, I don't know. I just think the way Kirby wants to substitute it isn't an issue. I doubt any of our interior DLinemen play a complete series anyway....or even 5 straight plays, but I haven't watched them that closely.

The problem is that Cooper is closer to 370 and maybe 6' tall.

That's a long time in CFB, offenses have changed a lot over the last decade, especially in the SEC. I don't think it's a coincidence that you don't see 2 350+ pound nose tackles at a lot of top schools like you did in the last 5-10 years. Our biggest nose tackles (Atkins and Rochester), probably aren't over 320 pounds.

You don't like butterballs?
This is just me, but I have always been of the opinion, if a kid can play go get him and don't worry if he is too small or too big. If he is too big let the S&C coach work some weight off him. Like I said...I'll defer to your opinion. You tend to be right more often than not.

That's all fine and good if we have the room... it just doesn't sound like we will... if he's not one of the 24 best available for our needs... he doesn't make the cut. If he *is*... he'll likely be included and his arse will live with the S&C staff. I can imagine. Love the kid... the Little Debbies comment was alluding to a comment he made earlier this year about his diet and success, and when asked if he missed anything/hardest to give up, it was Little Debbie cakes... #honestfatkidatheart #awesome

Not exactly. Already discussed in the 19 thread. Rusty was apparently thinking about putting in an Alabama CB though. From comments, sounds like he'd basically told the coaches he wanted to commit after the Mizzou game but took visits to Alabama and tOSU to cement his feelings. Kid looks like a hell of an athlete though. Plays DB, QB, and WR in HS... looks good in man coverage in HS for what it's worth (in his highlights at least).

Some of the guys y'all are listing (not committed yet) are not even in the same stratosphere ratings wise, though. If he were a scrub that wanted to com to UGA, I would understand, but he is one of the top DT's in the country.

Yeeeeeah. That wouldn't be a whole lot of fun.

There's your problem. Ratings are what *we* use... not the coaches. From everything that is being discussed, perhaps because of his weight, perhaps because we project other guys higher (Barmore/Trout for example), he just doesn't seem like he's as high on our board as his rating might suggest. That may be incorrect... at the end of the day, not many people can say "I know exactly what order our staff has recruits ranked"... but to assume that the 247 number is how they operate is just not accurate. Barmore's ranking will suffer simply due to sample size/lack of longevity of tracking... but his film shows me a guy that is more explosive/disruptive than Cooper's... albeit against worse competition IMO. I think Trout is a bit underrated as a guy that doesn't do many camps and plays HS ball in Missouri. Neither of them are a significant step down from Cooper from what I can see at all... even if you don't think they are necessarily better.

There is also an element of how much effort should you put in to bring a guy in as well. He's maintained that he's going to keep his FSU commitment through all of his OV's... how much effort is it worth putting in to get a guy to drop a commitment when you have 2 uncommitted guys available at the same position that might be a better fit for our defense anyways.

Yes and no. Alabama has 7 straight #1 classes and are easily the best program year in and year out. Ratings are not always accurate and correct, but they are more often than not. And it's not like a whole lot of other coaches are offering him scholarships....including us.
I am not questioning Kirby's methods, just people on this boards analysis, as far as us making room for him.

Maybe. Does anybody on here know what our board truly looks like, though, or are we making guesses?

Again, you guys might be right and you have very good insight into what our coaches are thinking/doing. I don't know. Either way, it's nice to have options.

This above all of it. If he's a take... great. He's a highly rated DT, that likely will be a bit of a S&C project. If not, regardless of whether it's due to him going with another program or not being a take... we have other options at the position. No getting caught with our pants down.

Dunno yet who else will be on campus this weekend, but per Sentell's most recent article (discussing 2020 DE that is eye-ing the dawgs... Jacolbe Cowan #7 overall), Luke Ford will be on campus for the South Carolina game on an unofficial visit.
