What's going on with Carter?

Trying to see if we have space as an EE or if he'll have to wait till the summer.

I'm not sure I understand that. I was under the impression that the 85 count didn't matter until August.

You can't be over 85 at any point in the year is my understanding.

Carter has done everything right, won't look good if UGA somehow fricks this up. He's set to move at the end of the month

Early Enrollees are a fairly new phenomenon, and i don't fully understand how it works....but, if I am not mistaken, those count against last seasons scholarship limits? It's something weird like that. I'm not sure how many we were short on last year...or even if that is how it works.
At its spring meetings in June 2011 in Destin, Fla., the SEC made headlines by adopting a hotly debated annual football signing cap of 25 prospects. Coaches were generally against the legislation, but school presidents were for it to address oversigning in football.
While the initial response was that it was a landmark move, that view overlooked the fine print of the legislation.
This was to be a soft cap of 25 and not a hard cap. So there was a loophole in schools’ ability to “backcount” prospects to a previous class if that prospect enrolled early in college.
Linebacker Ryne Rankin has already arrived at UGA to participate in on-campus bowl practices.
“It depends on what an institution has available,” said SEC associate commissioner Greg Sankey when asked at the time which year an early enrolling signee would count against. Basically, a school would have the ability to count a mid-year enrollee against the previous class or the upcoming one depending on the spots available and which worked best.

I think something has changed, but this gives us a basic overview. If anybody fully understands how it works, maybe they can give us a better overview.

The way I understand it is that you can't have 85 scholarship players on campus at any time. Scholarships in CFB are 1 year deals so even seniors who won't play for us again still have their scholarship through May or whenever. If a player graduates early, transfers, or is "processed" I THINK that means a scholarship becomes available but I'm not sure. So I don't think there's an issue of how many we can count back but rather how many scholarship players we'll have on campus in January.
So if we were at 85 scholarship players to start the season, 2 graduated early and 3 transferred, then we'd have room for 5 EEs. (All of those numbers were just made up, no idea how many graduated early or if we were at 85 to start the year).

Does anybody know how many EEs we'll have? Off hand I know Lecounte, Gibbs, Hayes, Carter but I think there is another 1 or 2.

Just remembered Fromm too, that is a lot of EEs to make room for.

That's as good an explanation as any. Thanks for taking the time to explain, and what you said seems reasonable.

I don't see it. We take a ton of guys in January, February, May, and June. And we don't have to shed weight until August.
I don't think the "85 at any given time" is it. I could be wrong. But 99% of the class is in by June 5th. And we aren't shedding bodies until class starts in August.

This sounds like the stories we heard when HotRod Garner was in charge

EE's allow you to "count back" a certain number of scholarships. Basically, each recruiting class has a 25 player cap on it. SO in this scenario, let's say in 2015 you signed 22 players, no one enrolled early. In 2016 you signed 24 and 3 of those enrolled early, so you could roll 3 onto the 2015 class. Now, in 2017, you have room for 4 EE's and a class of up-to 29 players. Greyshirts and all that stuff don't apply, but it was basically a rule against guys like Houston Nutt who once signed a class of like 26 kids with 20 roster spots available.

Carter officially decommits. Damn.

Carter just announced he is decommitting due to not being able to enroll early. Unfortunate situation

Not a great look for us

This sucks for a few reasons. Obviously it sucks to lose somebody who is as talented and has been as solid of a commit as he has been, but this is also going to get used against us by other coaches I would bet. Not a good look at all.
