The 83 season was great, no doubt. 85 I don't remember much that year...drugs and alcohol and controversy. The 1987 season was kind of like this season, we just got KY one game later in the SEC tourney. That team really didn't have as good of a season as this team did.
The NIT was not nearly as competitive in the 80s as it is now. There are just a lot more good basketball programs now. I think we supported them more than the teams get now. At least that's the way I recall it. I love Coach Duram, but I don't feel like those teams were as crisp at the teams we see under Fox.

I hope we can get matched up with SC again and beat them for a 4th time.

Me too...means we won the NIT tournament! I could be down with that

Another thing that I think makes Fox look pretty good is his SEC record is solid and trending in the right direction as far as consistently being over 500 and then some.
Posted on 3/14/16 at 7:23 am to Peter Buck
His average is .500 in SEC play. .550 overall.
Not only can he not beat the top teams, we get DESTROYED by them. I'm not saying he isnt a decent coach, I'm not even saying I want him fired (on the fence), but he obviously can't get recruits here and he is not the best 7 year stretch in program history.

His trend in SEC play is damn good. He doesn't get the players here, nor really has any UGA coach sustainably. He is an xcellent X and O coach and gets the best out of the players UGA can get.
I am firmly of the belief that UGA needs to make more than a coaching change to bring in the talent it needs. We have had spikes here and there, but nothing sustained and the constant has always been that we are not a basketball school. A coach alone is not going to change that...

Frazier may not play Wednesday. Fox says whether he does or not, Turtle will see more minutes as a reward for playing well against Kentucky

I'll exclude his first 2 years since he was taking over for felton and getting his own guys in. And before you think I'm being slanted, that will erase an NCAA tourney appearance.
In the last 5 years, where he really had "control" over the program, we've gone 90-73 (55%) and 49-42 (54%) in SEC play. Not elite, but certainly pretty good especially by UGA standards. If you take away that 3rd year those numbers improve pretty solidly as well.
I think some people have unrealistic expectations of our program. Can/should we be better at basketball? Well yeah, probably. But it's not just as simple as "get the right guy!". Easier said than done. The last 2 "right guys" we've had, 1 was run out of town for cheating and leaving the program in shambles and the other bolted for a better job. We aren't going to get teh basketball equivalent of nick saban, sorry but that's just the truth. We can probably find someone better than fox, but there's no way to know unless fox is fired first, and then you're taking a gamble.
I'm not as old as some of yall but over my lifetime this is as solid, stable, and postive as we've been as a program maybe in my lifetime. Sure we've had higher highs under other coaches but it seemed like it was only temporary until teh bottom fell out (which it did). Fox isn't going to leave us for another school unless some dream job opens. Anyoen with a brain can see we're trending up. Just look at our progress the last 5 years. We are at the point now as a program where we're realistically expecting posteason play. NIT is/shoudl basically be a guarnatee and we're now a bubble team the last few years. Look at his recent history:
12: .500 in conference play. Nothing to write home about, but the percpetion is starting to change a bit
13: 2nd in the SEC and 2nd round of the NIT
14: 3rd in teh league and made the NCAAT
15: Bubble NCAA team that will host the NIT
Add to that we have a very solid core group coming back next year to go with 2 top 100 national 4* players.
Bottom line is I as much as anyone else want to see us start acutally going somewhere in the tourney instead of just getting there....but to fire fox at this point could undo all of the work he's done and put us back to square 1, which would be a nightmare.

Well said. Fox definitely deserves another year. He has us winning consistently in the SEC. It's not at the level we'd like, but winning records in conference every year over the past 5 years is nothing to sneeze at.
Next season is key for him. If we miss the dance again next year I think there is a reasonable case for moving on from Fox. I'm not saying that would be my stance as it depends on many things, but he's earned next year no doubt.

The last 4 years in the SEC show an even better trend. I think a Fox does as good as anyone with 3 star talent and developing it. The question is, why can't he recruit elite players or do elite players not come because it's UGA? Either way, how can we fix it? I don't know the answer, but it is an issue that predates him.

What needs to be acknowledged is just how bad the sec has been over this 4 year time period and the breaks we had gotten in regards to the sec schedule.
Posted on 3/14/16 at 3:58 pm to djsdawg
Well that also makes it more difficult to make the NCAA tournament because there aren't very many opportunities to get quality victories, and if you lose to a bad team (like we did with Auburn) it can prevent you from getting in.

Has the SEC ever really been good at basketball?

Maybe so, but he is winning the games. Durham got in the dance with an 18 win team that was . 500 in the SEC.... We were still happy tho

It's been much better than this and we used to play uk twice a year.
Posted on 3/14/16 at 4:45 pm to Peter Buck
It's all about getting into the dance and judging from our seed in that season, we were off the bubble. That season alone is better than anything fox has done at Uga.
Posted on 3/14/16 at 5:19 pm to djsdawg
What's much better! How many teams made the big dance then?
Posted on 3/14/16 at 7:28 pm to Porter Osborne Jr
64 teams made it in 1987. 6 SEC teams made the dance that season. 8 seed is better than being on the right side of the bubble
Posted on 3/14/16 at 8:48 pm to djsdawg
So one year has been better than what we've seen since Fox has been here?
