This year is a failure of recruiting, not playcalling

Fact of the matter is that a few injuries on offense caused us to probably go winless in SEC play this year. I don’t mean 8, or 7, or 10 injuries. I mean just a couple.

We’re playing an enormous amount of money for a team that is so thin at OL, 2 injuries means two freshmen start. WTF? Then we’re so thin at QB we only have one serviceable?

All this in year 4. Who are we recruiting? What the frick are we doing?

I don’t know where the failure lies, but we’ve definitely seen this movie over and over again.

The thread about our systemic culture of losing has some merit.

t.u. demolishing Mobilehoma is only going to make it worse.

It is going to make it worse. But I really only think we have issues this year. OL will have experience next year, we'll have at least 2 mobile QB's on campus. Defense has enough talent to fill in when Leal and Peevy leave. And it's another favorable schedule. 1 year dip, but I don't think it's a long term killer. I still think it's fine we did what we did to keep Jimbo here. He's competitive. He's our best shot at a head coach making this a juggernaut program even though we're having a bad year.

It's more than Leal and Peevy.

Graduation: Peevy, Clemons, Tyree Johnson, Myles Jones, Hansford, George, O'Neal and Carper

NFL Draft: Leal, Richardson

Prison?: Jackson

That's 6-7 starters and 11 from the 2-deep, assuming no additional attrition through transfers.

TLDR: our recruiting has been fine, and can fill in our losses except maybe at receiver and a better QB may fix that.

Maybe I'm optimistic but: Jackson will still be here, Shemar Turner looks like a stud, Tunmise got some pub in fall camp, but couldn't break depth, Ardarious (sp?) Jones has had good things said about him, D. Harris, Jazion, Elijah J was heavily recruited, and the kid from Texarkana - all for DL.

Safety should be fine: E Young, Antonio Johnson, Jardin Gilbert, Brian Williams

Hansford is gone, but you've got Cooper, White is still here, Antonio Doyle, Tarian Lee has been mentioned by Jimbo, Chris Russell. Hansford is good at blitzing, but I bet we've recruited to fill in.

Myles hasn't even really played, so you hope Tyreke C, and Deuce H improve to start opposite of Jaylon J. Depth concerns me, but you have Norwood and our DB recruiting class... If you can hold your top guys looks good.

To me the only really really weak spot where no one is consistent and I don't feel super great about depth/prospects is WR. But that may be partially a function of who is at QB. And with Haynes/Connor W maybe a couple diamonds come out and Demas/Moose/Price/Chapman produce 2 options with Yulkieth Brown in slot.

OL will be better. I'm not worried about RB

I think the talent in the wings, with another year of seasoning (this year) will not leave us in an awful place for next year.

What about TE?

Cupp and Smith have played a combined 2 games since arriving on campus.

Max Wright? But yeah, TE would be a little light. I guess I'm hoping Cupp is a rockstar in the waiting

The fact that a 4 star DE is your 2nd string TE and not your 5 star and 4 star TEs shows how bad of a miss both were.

I don't agree. Cupp has been injured like Chapman. I think he still has potential, just needs reps. Smith has also been injured. That's not a talent miss. It may work out that they're not good, but I don't think you can make that call yet.

Also, our recruiting will be helped when we beat Alabama today ;)

We've been snake bit with injuries along the OL and TE positions this year. Add Calzada to the mix, and I'm not sure it is a recruiting failure.

I don't want to rain on Calzada's parade. He's trying. But it is a recruiting failure where a big time SEC multi, multi million dollar program (in salary alone) is short QB talent. I'm thinking there should be two fairly equivalently talented QBs available. I didn't play the game so I don't know if my opinion is reasonable??
When in 3 years has Calzada had any time to test his skills? It is this year and it's trial by fire.

He didn't play at all in 2020. He could have played in the Alabama, Arkansas and South Carolina blowouts but didn't.

That's on Jimbo, who refuses to pull his starter when the game is out of hand after 3.

He needed Mond to seal the deal I guess. Well, perhaps he will change as that old dog needs to still learn some new tricks.

When you lead 42-17 after 3, the LAST thing you need is for your starter to get hurt.

When you lead 41-3 after 3, the LAST thing you need is for your starter to get hurt.

Yet, despite that, Mond was playing deep into the 4th quarter in both games (and played THE ENTIRE ARKANSAS GAME)

I'm with you. I'm being facetious. I also haven't understood his reluctance to give his backups any real time. It obviously bit him on the butt this year. It would be helpful if Calzada had a little confidence. Most of the TV analysis I hear indicates Calzada just can't get comfortable back there. As far as the OLine? Most teams have turnover.
